Anyone up for loosing a stone - keeping each other company?

I really need to loose a stone. I’m 45, confirmed menopausal and at my heaviest at 11st 12lbs.

This has been gradual weight gain over the last 3 years.

I need to loose it, I feel sluggish and I’m only 5’4 so I’m starting to look like a barrel.

I have a few factors that mean I give up easy, 2 hour daily commute, stressful role in the NHS and the other stuff of juggling 2 kids etc.

So doing this with others, having some accountability would be helpful for me.

Just had tea, baked sweet potato with tuna mayo and a big salad. It’s the evening snacking that I need to break, cup of tea and crisps or chocolate or anything that’s to hand really! That’s going to be a hard habit to break but I need to do it and hoping the support of this thread helps

checkedcloth · 17/02/2022 18:46

I think we have to be kind to ourselves. It’s hard to totally transform your diet overnight.

I had a hot cross bun for breakfast, a ham roll for lunch and cooking Thai chicken thighs with rice and stir fry vegetables for dinner.

The lack of snacking today is excellent for me. However I’ve had 2 G&T’s. But it’s half term and next week I’ll be off the booze mid week

@cheeseybeans19 snacking for me is my downfall too. If I could stick to three meals, reduce carbs and booze I think I’d shift some weight.

I had a Whiltshire Farm Foods ready meal for tea tonight. Grin My mum gets them so I thought I'd try one. It was very nice, and only 340is calories, but, had loads of carbs in (Not good for a diabetic) and sugars. I have another of the same meal but don't know what to do with it? I don't want to just chuck it.

73kittycat73 · 17/02/2022 19:12

340ish that should have been.

recklessgran · 18/02/2022 08:38

Morning all. Yesterday was a complete write off - it was downhill from the toast into the biscuit tin.....need I say more? Must try harder today!
Hope you're all doing O.K. and will catch up later.

ExactlyThat · 18/02/2022 08:45

I’m going to try on Monday. Been wanting to lose a stone for about 10 years now! I’m not dieting though as it doesn’t work for me, I’m just going to cut out processed foods.

scooterbear · 18/02/2022 11:27

Title Fail yesterday and not much better today (on the grounds that I'm hunkering down in the storm which involves eating alot of banana loaf)

badkitty · 18/02/2022 12:51

Just made a slimming world fritatta for lunch - recovering from covid so can't actually taste v much but it looked good! I signed up for the nutracheck app in Jan to count calories and then was really crap at using it so trying to properly track food in there now. Just been looking through some old SW mags for recipe inspiration. Weighed 9.13 today which was the first time in a while I've been under 10 stone so feeling quite good about that.

73kittycat73 · 18/02/2022 13:36

Congratulations badkitty, well done on your milestone. I don't think I've been 9st something for over ten years! Grin

Readytostartagain · 18/02/2022 15:14

Can I join please? I have about 17 lbs to reach the top of my healthy bmi range though I’d like to lose more. Definitely peri menopausal and got into a very dangerous snacking habit. Starting properly on Monday but will try and think about what I’m eating this weekend.

ninnynonny · 18/02/2022 15:27

I need to lose about a stone. I have never ever put weight on - in fact I was 8 13 for years and then BAM the bloody menopause has crept me up to 10 10. I hate it so much. I'm 5' 6 and its nearly all round my tummy. I run loads (half marathoner) but just don't know what else to do, and , I know it sounds stupid, but really don't know what to eat! I think I eat well, but clearly not :(
Help is really needed!

recklessgran · 19/02/2022 08:28

Morning all. Well, let's just say that I've had 2 days "off plan" eating all the wrong carbs but my weight this morning still shows a loss since I started on Monday so now it's a damage limitation exercise! I'm just off to Tesco to stock up on low carb/low calorie food so I've got no excuse for not behaving myself over the weekend.
@badkitty congratulations on getting into the 9's. I bet that feels great, good for you. @73kittycat73 your post made me chuckle - I don;'t think I've been 9 stone since I was a young teenager over 50 years ago. My overall goal is to get into the 11's but for now I'm aiming to be in the 13's by Monday. Really big welcome to everyone joining us here.

recklessgran · 19/02/2022 08:35

@ninnynonny can you try cutting carbs and upping protein? It really works especially post menopause and on belly fat. I feel your pain having put on a stone a year for the 3 years following my "shop shutting" as I term it! I just didn't cotton on that the weight gain was related to the menopause until I'd got so big, so it's great that you've recognised the problem already - it must be something to do with hormones as I definitely can't eat anywhere near what I used to in terms of keeping the weight off.

SameToo · 19/02/2022 08:45

Can I join please? @checkedcloth my weight and height are pretty much the same as yours.

I have a toddler who still wakes in the night and a demanding job that also requires night work. Also had some I’ll health and recent allergy diagnosis. @recklessgran do you get medication to help with underactive thyroid? I’m starting to wonder if this might be part of my problem too. What were your symptoms if you don’t mind sharing?

Recovering from gastro so only really want to put healthy stuff into me at the moment which is good but need to maintain exercise.

BonesJones · 19/02/2022 09:03

May I join? I eat fairly healthy meals but generally spoil it with wine, cider and chocolate splurged. Several periods of isolation have encouraged me to slip into less activity. I'm very aware that I now have 'a middle'. And my bum and thighs are expanded to the point that I'm aware of them, does that make sense?! I do a sport that requires me to stay lean and strong, but have fallen off the wagon exercise wise outside of the sport. Losing fat / gaining muscle is the aim!

I'd like to incorporate more outside activity, cut out processed food altogether too, for health benefit reasons as well as weightless. I'm going to try to incorporate intermittent fasting too, but its difficult because my days are quite variable, I don't get a lunchbreak some days, and my evening meal times vary because of work / DC / DP / sport. I'll do my best though. I think an all or nothing approach gets me into these weight gain situations so just doing my best and making the next best decision is going to be my new approach! Hoping this thread will keep me accountable and its nice to reflect on things with others.

BonesJones · 19/02/2022 09:07

I also have no idea how much I weigh! Getting batteries in the scale is priority for the day!

drybird · 19/02/2022 09:46

Good morning all, I'd like to shuffle on in and join you please. I'm 49 and on HRT I'm not sure what I weigh but I'll start calorie counting as of today and be brave next week and step on the scales. I've seen my weight gradually increase since March 2020 when we went into lockdown and I quit smoking. Far less exercise and too much wine was consumed.. now I've done dry Jan and 50 days on not touched a drop it's time to look at the food intake a little more closely. I've recently upped my step count and I'm actively focused on 10k steps a day (although yesterday we didn't leave the house)..!! I haven't really ever had to diet but I most definitely do now 😆 I look forward to getting to know you all x

cheeseybeans19 · 19/02/2022 10:55

Well I managed to avoid snacking last night which is nothing short of a miracle! Have had 2 coffees and 2 slices of avocado toast for breakfast, planning on soup for lunch and then tea is often where it all goes downhill, so I need to start planning better!

MintyGreenDream · 19/02/2022 11:01

I'm on day 3 but ive just come off my period so I'm not weighing til tomorrow

recklessgran · 19/02/2022 11:14

@SameToo yes, I'm on levothyroxine. Sit down and get the popcorn out! My case is a bit complicated because my thyroid was destroyed by the radiotherapy that I had for breast cancer but I didn't know at the time that the radio was destroying my thyroid gland. For reassurance to anyone going through it, and for context, that wouldn't be the normal situation for breast cancer but my oncologist was worried about spread so decided to nuke me up to my neck not just the actual boob like they normally do IYSWIM. I just felt so knackered, brain foggy and like I was walking through treacle, also my bones hurt. Of course, I put this down to the radiotherapy because you're warned about tiredness etc., I was also imagining that the cancer had spread to my bones etc so it was a while before I sought help as I was utterly terrified if I'm honest. Anyway to cut a long story short, after my doc [who is some kind of a saint] did a full blood screening to try to find out what was going on - there was the evidence. Thyroid was shot. All other bloods normal including cancer markers.I can't tell you how happy that made me under the circumstances! I was put on thyroxine straight away and after a couple of weeks started to feel better. It's not a perfect solution but better than nothing. So, my advice is to get your bloods done as that's the only way to find out about your thyroid function. Having an underactive thyroid does cause weight gain and makes it very difficult to lose weight without drastic measures. If you take levo the advice seems to be to go low carb so that's the story behind why I am so evangelical about low carb/keto. Tried everything else to no avail. Phew! Sorry for long post and apologies for derailing the thread but hope it helps someone.

gingerhills · 19/02/2022 11:22

Damn. I just promised DH I would make a cake and then saw this thread. I really need to lose a stone. I would feel SO much happier if I was a stone lighter.
@73kittycat73 - thanks for those links. I am usually quite active and go to bootcamps but since Covid I've barely rolled off the sofa for two weeks, but have eaten my body weight in chocolate and jelly sweets. I did the stretch one. It's a start!

SameToo · 19/02/2022 11:32

@recklessgran thank you for sharing I’m so sorry you went through that! I’m torn between if the tiredness is down to having developed gluten and dairy allergies since having last child or if it’s something else. I guess the best thing to do is get a blood test to rule it out at least. Thank you 😊

recklessgran · 19/02/2022 11:52

Welcome to all the new joiners by the way. @gingerhills why not bake and enjoy your cake and start on Monday? A lot of us are Monday weighers and it will give you the weekend to prepare yourself.
