A stone or less to lose

Anyone looking for the magic stone more or less? I’m furious with myself and in a slight panic here. I had a fantastic weight loss last summer - June, July and August I lost 20lb and felt bloody brilliant. Stalled in September but kept it off until Jan then the last lockdown got to me and I have regained 7lb. Now, I know thats not loads but it puts my lovely big loss last summer back quite a bit and I can feel the inches going back on. It’s such a shame because I felt amazing slimmer and very proud of myself for shifting the pounds I’d been holding on to since my last baby (cough...three years ago!).

For context: I was 11st 9, I got to 10st 3 and am back up to 10st 10. My initial goal, which I never quite managed was 9st 12. I’d love to get there this time.

The burst of glorious weather today made me feel I want to BE slim this summer rather than “slimming” this summer. I want to do it now and not wait for the heatwave to kill my appetite Grin

Anyone else want to shift up to a stone now and not wait until two weeks before their holiday...what holiday??? Grin

Can I chip in? I used to be a size 6 seven years ago and struggled to put on weight, but have since gained two stone since having two kids. Still not overweight (was probably on the skinny side before) but I feel bloody awful and frumpy, like I've let myself completely go. I'm bf too (I tend to retain while bf) and I'm normally petite and don't carry weight well. I know I'm probably not going to be a size 6 again (late 30's) but a stone off and getting into a size 10 would great. I got a stomach bug last year as you do when you have kids and I lost a lot of weight and felt much better, but haven't had one this year. Never wanted one so much Grin

Has anyone tried no carb diet and do they work? I can't fast as I get really shaky and feel faint if I miss meals. I haven't dieted since my teens, so I've got no discipline and no idea how to go about it. I'm trying to get out for a run, but I WFH FT and my kids are still young, so it is really hard to find time to get out. I also don't sleep great due to youngest DC and my alcohol consumption has definitely gone up too.

I'm hoping a thread like this might be motivating and kick me up my (wobbly) arse. I'm 9,13 and 5"3-4. Would love to hit 9st.

RatintheCat · 02/04/2021 08:07

Me! Also 5ft so aiming for 8 stone. I am calorie counting and have lost 4lb so far in 2 months so want to increase the rate ideally but in fairness the first month I wasn't trying too hard so this month has been more about setting good habits. Dreading Easter temptation!

Straysocks · 02/04/2021 08:20

Hi @OysterMonkey, I heard a lot about it on another thread on here when I lost my first stone. I like it because not only did it help me lose weight it helped me change the way I think about food.

I honestly don't feel like a slave to my food impulses now, it's such a new thing for me and at middle age too. I'm not hyper focused on what exactly I can and can't eat, it's like I can let go of those chains. I usually eat between 1-7pm. Lunch is usually quite light, not starving at all. Often a small plate of food 3-4 and another 6-7, although that's just my own pattern. I like whole milk in coffee, full fat Greek yoghurt, crackers & cheese with fruit and so on. I've found there are odd days when I don't need much to eat at all, maybe one meal. Only occasionally days when I'm hungry and then I eat in response but I'm easily sated then. For me, using MFP within the eating window shifts the weight, 1260 calories within 6 hours is a lot of legroom. I seem to have settled down to less carbs with final meal, so lots of braised sliced greens with chicken for example. All v intuitive and it's made me listen to my body much better.

The thing I was saying yesterday about sabotage is that by 3pm I hadn't eaten, felt great. Thought I should probably eat something then as a hugely busy day and no further breaks til late evening. I somehow chose two massive fresh pretzels. A banana would have done it. I didn't want them even. I topped it off with two hot cross buns at 7, I loved the first but didn't want/need the second and knew that as I ate it. Poor choices, not driven by hunger and of no benefit. Blinking sabotage.

Does that sound any good to you?

Cavagirl · 02/04/2021 09:11

@NobbySignaler I'm a big Dukan fan, which is low carb but you have to have some oats every day which you can use to make something carby with for one meal a day. I find it makes the diet more doable than pure no carb.
I've started Dukan twice now and the first 2 days always feel rubbish but then by the end of day 2 feel great.
If you're interested I'd recommend reading the book first - you can get it for a couple of £ used online these days. It really does work, I need to get back on it properly!

OysterMonkey · 02/04/2021 10:37

@Straysocks that’s really interesting, thanks.
I’ll check out that link too.
I don’t have a huge appetite, and I’m not a big snacker, so I think it’s something I could get on board with.
I think a combo of wfh (so much less daily movement) and more wine has contributed to my weight gain.

Cookie79 · 02/04/2021 13:05

I’ll join. Am 10 stone, my happy weight is 9 stone - am 5ft 2.. It has just crept on over the past year. WFH means I’m not moving about as much, but I’ve been eating and drinking crap too if I’m honest.

Life is stressful at the minute - moving house 60 miles away and I’ve managed to get and have started a job up there. Also trying to find DD a suitable school.

Although WFH I do have to go in office sometimes and my eating is all over the shop on those days - setting off before 7am means I just don’t feel like breakfast, it’s a 120 mile round trip so I come home exhausted and don’t make great food choices.. Once we move I’ll be hoping to bus in and walk home on nice days.

I used to go to the gym but it was a very small ladies one, opening hours limited and hardly ever opened on time. Some local Trainers seem to want pictures of people practically in their knickers and plaster before and after pictures all over Facebook and film people puffing their way through their classes - that is my my worst nightmare. I do have a cross trainer machine and found some decent workouts on YouTube (Chloe Ting is quite good - have rather sore abs from the other morning).

Although the BMI calculator doesn’t have me at overweight (just) I don’t FEEL healthy.

I have MFP and definitely agree logging calories does seem to make me think hard about what I’m eating.

EggyPegg · 02/04/2021 16:55

This describes me to a T. So I'm trying to be more mindful.

I did get my puncture fixed today. I must have had a slow one for ages before noticing as it was like riding a whole new bike! I went for a short ride back from Halfords via the park with the DC and then decided to make the effort to cycle to Pets at Home for cat food rather than drive after bringing them home.

I started losing weight again in lockdown one and I attribute it not only to eating properly, but I was also cycling almost daily with the DC and it got us out of the house but away from other people.

I work 4 miles away so I'm going to start cycling there and back on my short day (no time the other days as I need to collect the DC from school).

musicalfrog · 02/04/2021 17:03

Can i join you? I was nearly 9 stone a month ago and my target is 8stone.(height 5'2) I've lost half a stone already semi-following the Fast 800 diet which I love, but with family birthdays and Easter etc I've plateaued in the last week or so! The last bit of weight is the hardest to lose. I could do this diet fully and probably lose the rest easily but I would miss my cups of tea and wine... Need some moral support!

EggyPegg · 02/04/2021 19:48

I think it's important to have some things though. Life is too short to cut it all out. I had a packet of pickled onion Monster Munch at the park earlier. They were lovely. But I won't have anything else like that for the rest of the day now, and I did cycle a fair bit earlier.

I try to keep everything in moderation otherwise the forbidden foods become an obsession.

Mind you, there's Pringles in the cupboard that don't make it easy on me.

What is it about the cups of tea? The milk and sugar?

musicalfrog · 02/04/2021 20:42

Yep the milk and sugar. I have one sugar in my tea. I have cut down to two cups per day though. I could have as much fruit tea as I like but it doesn't quite hit the spot for me.

Straysocks · 02/04/2021 21:40

@OysterMonkey it sounds like you'd be great at it. It seems that wfh goes hand-in-hand with wine intake, totally agree with the reduction in activity.

@EggyPegg sorry that my hot cross bun take of woe was all to familiar. If it's any help I felt really supported knowing I'm not alone.

I'm not sure I'm to be trusted entirely with moderation, think that's why I'm good with an eating window. Enjoyed all meals today and thanks to you all I resisted the pull of the buns this eve and had a cup of peppermint tea. Polishing my halo right now.

EggyPegg · 03/04/2021 00:14

I have my tea black with no sugar which keeps it free/syn free etc.

I finished off the Bailey's that was in the fridge tonight. So much for no more. But at least its gone now. It's been in there since Christmas

chloechloe · 03/04/2021 14:35

Hello everyone, I really need to join you!

After over a year of lockdown (it’s still ongoing where I am), my weight has slowly crept up and my hips and waist are decidedly donut like! I think WFH and not having to wear normal fitted work clothes meant I haven’t really noticed. I got the tape measure out though yesterday and was shocked.

I need to come up with a plan, after eating lots of Easter chocolate of course!

I find doing intermittent fasting (18:6) quite easy to do, but didn’t really see any results after doing it for 6 weeks a while back and then stopping. I think it’s supposed to be common that the weight does not come off straight away though - has anybody any experience?

Fastforwardtospring · 03/04/2021 15:16

@chloechloe Have also been WFH for over a year and it is definitely showing now, I too was going to start after Easter, I knew my jeans were feeling tight so I jumped on the scales and quickly off again, am now not going to weigh again until my clothes feel better! I too like the intermittent fasting 16:8 and have been doing this but evidently eating too much or the wrong foods in the 8 hour window, so am going to log everything in MFP and see what happens. Good luck, am sure we can all do this.

Frequentflier · 04/04/2021 22:43

Marking. I am 5"7, 11 stone and need to lose at least half a stone. A stone would be better but I am 49 and peri-menopausal, so it's hard. Trying to do 16:8 and low carbing.

annabell22 · 05/04/2021 09:13

Can I join you? I am trying to get back to around 53kg, presently 58.8kg and have been between 58.3 - 60.2 since new year. I want it to go down, stay down and keep going down further! I live overseas so still have gym access, although I walk and run outside a lot too.

I have been listening to Corinne Crabtree's podcast (Lose 100lbs with Corinne) and although I am not in that bracket, her no nonsense (she calls it no BS!) approach resonates with me. She is not an advocate of calorie counting and I make almost all of my food from scratch - 95% plant based - so calorie tracking is a faff. I also listened to the audiobook of Atomic Habits and have set myself some daily habits, which I have also found helpful - water intake, vitamins/iron, minimum 10 minutes of walking/running, keep a journal and no eating in secret. No one ever eats lettuce in secret so you can imagine what was going on there! I would buy junk on the way home and eat it before I got back, or while shopping but it would not make it home.

Last August I was 54.5 and would love to see that again in a few months! Due to the climate here I am in swimwear all year round and right now I do not want to look too closely at myself in a mirror, let alone in a bikini.

I just turned 53 last week and cannot blame baby weight, she's 21!

This really resonated with me. I was following this plan last year and got great support on another "lose the last stone" but I had more weight to lose.

I did really well and pretty much bought a new wardrobe of clothes and felt this way of eating really worked for me but I've got lazy recently and now have 8lbs to lose to hit target rather than the 3lbs I was so close to in January!

Following this thread but at least now I know what works for me plus the exercise I need to do too! Xx

OhCobblers · 05/04/2021 13:11

@musicalfrog I miss wine too so allow it on Fri and Saturday without fail !! Life is too short!

Frequentflier · 05/04/2021 19:57

I can do without alcohol as am not much of a drinker, except socially. The really hard thing for me, as an Asian, is cutting out rice. I dream of rice sometimes.... Cutting out bread must be the same.

musicalfrog · 05/04/2021 20:31

@Frequentflier have you tried cauliflower coconut rice? It's a low cal alternative and works strangely well.

@OhCobblers yes it's hard to keep on plan long term especially if life gets busy as you have to cook so much from scratch. Have you seen the new recipe book, supposed to be easy /quick recipes following the same type of plan. I'm afraid I allow myself wine most days... Life is indeed too short! Wink

annabell22 · 06/04/2021 10:34

Today I did the 12-3-30 treadmill work out. I run and/or walk most days but this was tough! I'm also really out of practice at walking or running up slopes, never mind actual hills, as it's pretty flat where I live. I was dripping with sweat before I was even half way through. Once I'd finished and cooled down a bit, I did a 5km run. I listened to The Doctor's Kitchen podcast about your set weight, it was really interesting.

I'm weighing myself daily during the school holidays then I'll go back to weekends only. Today I was the same weight as yesterday.

Frequentflier · 06/04/2021 11:31

@musicalfrog I have tried cauli rice but didn't really take to it. Will give it another try though as the menopause weight gain is really upsetting me. My mom thinks I am crazy for cutting out rice and chapattis!

Thedogshow · 06/04/2021 12:25

Yes please! I’m at the higher end of my healthy BMI and would like to get back to BMI 21-22 which I have been for most of my adult life. Late 30s & I find I put on weight very easily these days (aka binge eat chocolate, popcorn & wine when I’m tired).
Have tried lots of times to do a quick fix, eg low carb or 5:2, but this never works longer term for me.
So will go back to the slow, steady, boring route & hope to keep it off.
Weigh 10st 7 & want to be 9st 12.

Cavagirl · 06/04/2021 16:08

Right back on it today following a weekend of naughtiness! I've put on 3lbs since Thursday which has me at 10 St 8lb, right at the top of the healthy range 🙈 It's mainly water retention after all the carbs though right?!? Lol.
Thursday weight was 10 st 5 so need to get back there before I feel like I'm actually making progress!! It's been a good day so far though...

year5teacher · 06/04/2021 18:01

Yes - well, 15lbs but pretty much! Currently 8 stone 9 (thought I was 8.5 stone this morning as I miscalculated.. a crushing blow 🤦‍♀️) and I would like to be 7 stone 8.

I’m 5 foot 1 and got this way by not moving in the evenings and eating like shit. Cannot wait to shift the weight!
