Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)
@chalkyc2 No specific diet. I'd been cutting back and cutting down, making swaps to things like jelly instead of ice cream, lower fat stuff and I was trying to exercise more.

I'm the family cook so if I don't cook no one will eat.
No support at all on my diet. Everyone here is thin.
DH didn't question me going back for a second Magnum last night.

I'm intelligent, educated and professional.
But food is my total nemesis.
Would you have been upset if he did say something?

When I was trying to lose weight my DH would try to help me not go for unhealthy snacks but I imagine not everyone would want to be told this... It was embarrassing at times

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 24/04/2021 15:00

Lost 2lbs. Only about another 34 red balloons to go ... 🎈

Best wishes all 🌻

unvillage · 24/04/2021 16:03

Hello everyone. Can I join you? I read the first post and I could have written it myself, it describes me perfectly! I've been obese for almost a decade but put a lot of weight on over lockdown as my workplace was closed from March to September! I had a photo taken of me yesterday that made me cry, it was such a shock.

120.4kg as of this morning, 5'5. I've tried changing habits (mostly snacking!) many times and always failed, I think not doing it on my own will help.

FatCatThinCat · 24/04/2021 17:55

Welcome @unvillage, we're all fighting the same battle, might as well do it together. Strength in numbers and all that.

emptyempire · 24/04/2021 20:04

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons

Wow emptyempire how long has it taken you? Your must have transformed your health prospects Halo

manicmom that’s an extraordinary loss for one week, no wonder you’re happy! Flowers

Apologies @Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons I've only just spotted your question. It's taken me about 2 years to get this far, with some epic falls from grace along the way. Now I still have 2.5 - 3 stones left to lose, but I do think I'll do it this time and yes my health prospects have improved dramatically as the weight has come off and I'm fitter than I've ever been.

It's nice to have a thread where people understand how it feels to be hugely overweight and how soul destroying it can be to try and fail to overcome it over and over again. Most people I know really have no idea and have said some shockingly insensitive things. Keep at it everyone!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 24/04/2021 20:07

Hi unvillage 👋

SheldonesqueTheBstard May I ask you to explain about the red balloons? It’s not a reference I’m familiar with.

I’m another who does all the family cooking including (very 😜) approximately one million crepes today & a loaf of bread most days - I am very proud to say I didn’t have so much as a bite of crepe today 😇
The bread is my nemesis but if I can stay away for about 2 months it loses all its power 🤞

Good luck all

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 24/04/2021 20:15

We must have been writing at the same time emptyempire! 2 years wow I’m so pleased you are feeling the difference.
I’m not sure I even remember what it’s like not to be covered by several inches of fat - I’d have to go back to Uni days & I was still the fattest person in the room then!
I hear you of the comments - my best friend is actually a trained fitness coach but lives a long long way away when I have opened up to her she suggested I should try not to sit down & snack less 🤦🏻‍♀️

emptyempire · 24/04/2021 22:40

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons your friend's suggestions sound familiar, I've had lots of those from people who've never been more than 5lbs overweight in their lives! Good job she lives so far away, to avoid you being tempted to poke her in the eye with a sharp stick Grin

Luckily she is utterly lovely & doesn’t have a judgmental bone in her body so her helpful Hmm suggestions only come when I ask for help. It was quite upsetting to realise she thinks I am sitting about on my arse all day whilst I’m actually running about after 3 children all day!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 24/04/2021 23:28

Hello gibbons Smile

I totally made it up. I am a product of my time. 99 Red Balloons was a song from my youth.

My first weigh in was 99kg. 99 balloons. 🎈 each one capable of lifting a kg before I can float in the summer sky...

Sorry for being obtuse Sad

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 25/04/2021 02:54

Ahh Sheldonesque that’s lovely- personalised & creative NOT obtuse!

I dream of being under 100 kg - it’s been at least two decades Shock but maybe next year Smile I’m only looking as far as my 12 week pledge just now

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 25/04/2021 11:08

Thank you gibbons

I’ve been well over 100 in my time but it kind of settled back down to 12 stone. I was still big because I’m short.

Then got badly bullied at work, ate and starved myself stupid and then decided to regrow my invisibility cloak.

I’m probably as wide as I am tall in parts.

So here goes with the balloons 🎈

I’m not looking further than the week.

We are in good company here I think flower. It will be our safe place 🌻

unvillage · 25/04/2021 13:10

I've been for a walk two days in a row. Today for an hour. Unheard of for me. It doesn't feel good tbh. I hate the sore feet and ankles, the sweatiness, having people see me clearly out of breath... but now I'm back home I feel okay. :)

I love the red balloons thing. I'm 21 balloons over the 99 Grin but something to aim for!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 27/04/2021 18:04

Good for you unvillage can the sore feet be helped by different shoes?

The red balloons make me think of a birthing visualisation a friend used - blue balloons being filled by breaths during contractions then released into the air (or something like that anyway!)

Anytime I’ve been lugging around the backpack full of drinks the different when they’re removed - even when it’s just a litre is amazing and that’s just one kg! It always makes me wonder how it feels not to be weighed down by all this - would I float away?! Grin

Finding it hard going today - I’m tired & want to fall into bread & the ginger biscuits the kids made but I haven’t so hurrah!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 27/04/2021 18:06

Urgh knights move thinking - I meant to say the losing of a bottle of water like the balloon pulling you upward with each kg lost

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 27/04/2021 18:06

Knight’s Blush

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 27/04/2021 19:03

I’ve done 35000 steps today and I could have done with 🎈

I don’t think we will float away flower but I’m trying to imagine how much easier it will be to walk with less poundage and it must feel like floating - surely? 🙏🏼

My knees feel like they’re made of sawdust and my feet are throbbing like a Tom and Jerry cartoon Sad

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 27/04/2021 19:03
Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 27/04/2021 20:02

35k is impressive! Did you walk somewhere nice? (My first thought was actually “did you find enough toilets?!” Grin)

Hope the feet recover quickly- I swear by magnesium/Epsom salts.

Tom & Jerry is ageless surely?! My DH watches them with the kids Grin

TrinityWaves · 27/04/2021 20:32

Just checking in...the relaxed covid rules have mean I've been getting loads more exercise! I'm still snacking much less but struggling with healthy meals only. I haven't weighed in for a while, plan to on friday.

OP posts:
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 27/04/2021 20:40

I’d a rotten nightshift last night (so a few steps were done on that) and went for a walk to chill before sleeping for tonight - with the dog that I walk. (And love!)

Chilling out took longer than expected - the hound was up for it and so we walked on. And then a little bit more. And then it just made sense to keep going the long way round instead of turning back. It was nice though. Just by a stream and through a spring time forest where everything just smells amazing.

I’m will be soaking said throbby feet on Dead Sea salts tomorrow when I get home from work again (they can’t be far off the mark?!) my feet are probably the colour of 🎈 - I’m scared to look!

Tom and Jerry ARE ageless to me. My nephew’s mate had no idea what they were 🥴

I baffled him with crystaltips and alistair and Mary, mungo and midge 😁

The throbbing has some way to go. I reckon it’ll be nearer 45 by midnight.

As for the toilets? I don’t drink for an hour (travelling home) and go before I go...

It isn’t sensible but it works for me. I can last about 3-4 hours without a pit stop. No more though.

In my thinner younger days I could go all day without needing. I’m sure my fat makes matters worse in that department.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 28/04/2021 23:10

Hurrah for relaxing rules TrinityWaves

SheldonesqueTheBstard ahh I’d love a dog to borrow! I suspect we could borrow PIL’s but the 5 yr old out walks the daft wee thing Grin I like a proper dog!

You deserve a medal for night shift- I don’t sleep at the best of times but if I’m awake past about 4am that’s me awake for a couple of days, sleep deprivation makes me weirdly hyper & unable to sleep.

Hope the salts do magic on your feet.

Lots of tactical dehydration going on here too! My friend swears by a shewee but I just can’t....

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 29/04/2021 22:54

Feet fine gibbons - another 60 done.

No shewee in this house but have been tempted. I’d rather have a retractable pipe. But that would add another couple of lbs so ...

Ate chocolate today. Felt the shame. I’ve been doing well and ruined it.

I love nightshifts. But it is possible we are similar in the sleep department. I have terrible trouble getting a decent sleep. Every fortnight or so I sleep like the dead for about 9 hours as a catch up.

I’ve lost one pound this week. One ruddy pound.

And I’ve probably put it back on with that chocolate.

Bugger.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 01/05/2021 00:52

I’d rather have a retractable pipe. But that would add another couple of lbs so ... GrinGrinGrin
I cut a few inches off my hair the other day & absently wondered if it would count as weight loss Blush

Don’t feel ashamed! One day off is nothing compared to how many days you’ve had on. Feel proud of how far you’ve come!

Plus how much chocolate would be needed to actually contain as many calories as a lb of fat!

I only have dark chocolate in the house for me as it’s much easier to eat it slowly- the kids have bloody Easter chocolate aaaaall over the house though & keep breathing it on me!

I’ve stuck to it 7 days this week, although today was a slight blip as I had extra boiled eggs - at least it was a healthy blip I suppose.

Day 19 of 84 done (fully aware I’ll need to repeat the 84 several times but doing a time limited chunk is feeling far more within my control than miserably waiting for the scale to move & projecting those tiny losses months/years into the future...)

I don’t seem to get the sleep like the dead night any more - I did most of my twenties on 1-4 hours a night with one 12 hour a week. I don’t seem able to lose weight unless I get enough sleep, I’ve resorted to melatonin but still don’t get enough.
It’s also taken me a very long time to not resent the hours wasted by sleeping Grin

FatCatThinCat · 01/05/2021 10:02

115.4 kg for me. That's a 3 kg gain. Hoping it's down to being full of cold all week which affects my sleep apnea. Otherwise I'm in big trouble.
