Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

Thank you FlatEarthling - sorry that you’ve got a crook leg.

I’m never ever going to need to lose just the two ounces. My chin hair weighs more than that Blush

I wish you an easy recovery and if you are up for it, you can provide a not so crook shoulder for me on weigh in day - I daren’t look at the moment. Sad

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/04/2021 17:58

I was bmi 51 last year @Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons
Now 36 and that's with days off for that and that and something like 1600-1700 cal a day. I do take it slowly because I don't do well with big restrictions. I am actually really enjoying this process because I eat good food (just less) and still hape lots of fun with ingredients. If anything it actually pushed me to try more and more nee things so all just benefits here really. I am also hoping that my slowly way is not only good for me keeping with it but for my skin to "bounce back". Wishful thinking I guess.

If I did it, you and @SheldonesqueHasTheWeevils can!

SheldonesqueHasTheWeevils · 11/04/2021 18:53

Brava schrodinger 👏🏼

I will be going canny - wrong side of 50, post menopausal and with looser skin than that chap with the elastic face. Mines won’t be bouncing back anywhere if I go hell for leather.

It’ll just bounce off my knees.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/04/2021 19:58

🙈 @SheldonesqueHasTheWeevils

And thank you. I am taking some h&b collagen and eat collagen ok rich diet so fingers crossed.
I've already looked at skin removal in Prague though. 😂 Covering all bases just in case.

SheldonesqueHasTheWeevils · 11/04/2021 20:03

Will be doing something similar if you think it helps. 🤞🏼

Prague eh? Will google.

I’ll probably be off this mortal coul in half an hour though. Someone on my bus has rotten guts and I’m being deprived of oxygen. 🤮

SheldonesqueHasTheWeevils · 11/04/2021 20:04

Coil.

Cant even see what I’ve typed for the fug 🤢

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/04/2021 20:06

😂 good luck on your smelly voyage

SheldonesqueHasTheWeevils · 11/04/2021 20:08

I can’t believe I’m hoping for some yoofs who take Lynx baths to get on...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/04/2021 08:39

Lol. Hope you survived😂

Stellaris22 · 12/04/2021 11:09

Just met with a Personal Trainer and starting Wednesday. Very nervous but determined, BMI is over 40 and I really need to commit to this. PT was really lovely and supportive as she specialises in helping with weight loss.

manicmom · 12/04/2021 22:19

Can I join you please? I need some support on my weight loss journey. I’m 20st 2lb at the moment so my bmi is about 41. My weight is causing me to have some pretty serious health conditions and I really need to get on top of it. I have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder which makes things tricky. Im just so fed up of feeling achy and knackered all of the time and needing a CPAP machine to breathe at night is pretty shit too!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 12/04/2021 23:02

Thanks SheldonesqueHasTheWeevils today went well hope you’re going well too?

Wow SchrodingersImmigrant that’s very inspiring. On principle I’m definitely in favour of slow & steady, not cutting out food groups etc but my body isn’t Confused I did weeks of 1400 cal and lost very little then put more back on over a very short time. Last year did omad lost 18kg & put half back on but it was over a few months. I’m hoping that having a set period of time this time will help.

My aunt maintains that we have the genes that will endure the next ice age Grin (I know this is technically ice age currently but ykwim!)

Hope your leg is improving FlatEarthling?

SheldonesqueHasGotTheWeevils · 12/04/2021 23:24

I’m here because I reckon I’m close to doing myself a serious mischief health wise manicmom.

After sitting on a rancid bus yesterday I haven’t felt like eating much today, although I’ve not long had my vaccination and am already nauseous.

I’ve not weighed myself just yet. I’m saving that disgrace till the end of the week. I know it is going to be bad.

I’m off next week so can meal prep etc and give myself a fighting start.

I eat every feeling I’ve got. And it is showing.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 15/04/2021 21:05

How is everyone?

I carefully decided to start after my period so as to avoid the hormone hiccup at the beginning of my plan - so I started an extra period on Tuesday Angry Thank you body!
I sleep even less than normal when I’ve got my period Hmm

Stellaris22 · 15/04/2021 21:09

Struggled a bit today as I've been cold and hungry, but stuck to my meal plan.

I had to buy bread and I was incredibly tempted to buy chocolate, but treated DD to a magazine instead.

DH has downloaded MyFitness Pal and is doing this with me, WFH means he hasn't been walking to work and is in a similar situation to me (not as bad as me though).

Are the Pinch of Nom books any good for calorie counting?

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 15/04/2021 21:40

I don’t have the PoN books (which reminds me I had 2 of them reserved as e books at the library when the library switched apps so I lost them - thank you, I’ll request them again!) but the archive has a filter by calories option that could be useful

NeonStones · 15/04/2021 22:22

Hi all. Gibbons that is typical of stupid periods. Always appearing when you don’t want one and staying away when you do. I’m very grateful for my IUD that has killed mine off completely.

Excellent work on avoiding the chocolate Stellaris.

I’ve had a mixed week. Bit of a wobble, plus some taking advantage of places reopening. But I was actually quite restrained in my wobble and I’m back on track today despite a day out. Which is a better bounce back than I’ve had in a long time. Looking forward to the kids going back to school so I don’t have them badgering me for snacks every 5 seconds!

NeonStones · 16/04/2021 10:00

Weigh in time.

Start: 5/4 - 118.5kg
9/4 - 117kg
16/4 - 116kg

Total loss: 2.5kg not an "omg I lost 10lbs in my first week" kind of diet but I actually feel really good about this plan. I'm not constantly thinking about food. I haven't been craving snacks. I feel healthy.

wombatsandaplant · 16/04/2021 10:58

I have weighed in this morning and I’ve lost a kilo since Tuesday wooo.

chalkyc2 · 16/04/2021 12:28

I'm only down 1kg this week. Annoying as I haven't slipped off my plan at all. Apart from tea with milk - and honestly I need at least 3 cups to get me through the day so that's that!

wombatsandaplant · 16/04/2021 13:11

@chalkyc2 1kg is great.

NeonStones · 16/04/2021 13:16

Absolutely, 1kg is very respectable and sustainable.

FatCatThinCat · 16/04/2021 14:32

My BMI was 53 this time last year and is now 43. It can be done, don't let the numbers doubt yourself before you've even started. My aim is to get out of the morbidly obese range ASAP and lose enough by summer to climb the pool ladder so I can get in when it's roasting. Couldn't do it last year, but this year ...

wombatsandaplant · 16/04/2021 15:10

I just calculated my bmi after doing with for 2.5 weeks and I’m now out of the 60s (I was only just 60). Woo, now 58.

I’ve also, on top of my 45 minute workout today, done a 1.5 mile walk. Which doesn’t sound like much but it was up a steep hill and it’s super sunny outside.

FatCatThinCat · 16/04/2021 15:17

A 45 minute workout and a 1.5 mile walk is a huge amount if your BMI is 58 @wombatsandaplant. Don't minimise your acheivement! I only go once around the block and that's only since my BMI has gone down. When it was 53 I couldn't even make it to the end of the drive. Genuinely couldn't do it.
