Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

@FatCatThinCat thanks Grin

Hurrah for all losses, exercise & sticking to it Flowers

I’m really interested that BMI relates to limited walking for others as this I think explains why people assume I don’t/can’t exercise- I walk 5 miles most days sometimes including proper hills. I do have problems with my feet though - finding comfortable shoes is a mission!

I’m not weighing as it will make me frustrated so I’m reporting that I’ve stuck to my plan this week /5days.

I find weekends tricky, not so much the food but I want to drink tea from when I get up! Also the Weekend is a carb fest for the children Blush

FatCatThinCat · 17/04/2021 07:30

I'm now 113.1 kg. A 1.3 kg loss from last week. Need to be under 112.5 kg to be back to where I was before the wheels fell off. I'm hopeful that will be next week.

Well done everyone for your losses and sticking to your plans. Don't be disheartened if you didn't, you can pull this back.

springisacoming · 17/04/2021 10:15

Hello. Room for a little one?

BMI 37. Need some company in bringing this down.

Today is a new day and it's still nice and early so I haven't messed up so far!

SheldonesqueHasGotTheWeevils · 17/04/2021 11:29

99 red balloons floating in the summer sky. Without me. Unless each balloon Is capable of lifting 1kg.

I would say onwards and upwards but maybe just onwards today for this first go on the scales.

🎈 🎈

Here is to a loss next week. Bon chance all 🌻

PinkArt · 17/04/2021 15:27

No loss, no gain this week which I'm ok with after a bit of stress eating. I've noticed I'm not out of puff after walking now though which is a big incentive to keep going

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 18/04/2021 14:29

Bloody hell it’s hard making seedy chocolate granola for the kids without nibbling at the mixture 😬
Once it’s cooked & cold it’s fine but the precooked mix & the warm out of the oven stage 😩

I had my burger in lettuce rather than a roll last night & remembered how much I prefer it to a roll, as long as I have the right lettuce!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/04/2021 19:54

Hi can I join you please?
I'm 196lbs appr

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/04/2021 19:56

Sorry premature post!
Approx 14st give or take about 3lbs which keep popping on & off.
I have needed to lose weight for the last 8 years!
Feeling increasingly worried & like I really need s kick up the bum.
I need to loose 3 stone just to get to the top end of a healthy bmi.

emptyempire · 18/04/2021 21:40

Starting Weight: 276 lbs BMI 43.5
Current Weight: 180 lbs BMI 28.3
Target Weight: 136 lbs BMI 21.3

I've been catching up on reading all of your posts and it's great to see how determined you all are.

I'm still plodding along with losing weight (4lbs to go to hit 100lbs lost) though I've had a sticky few weeks and I'm often staying around the same weight for weeks at a time. That used to be when I'd self sabotage, but now I just keep going, knowing that it all has to come off eventually.

My best tip is to remember that one bad day does not ruin everything and you can ALWAYS just start afresh tomorrow, clamber back on the wagon and keep going. If you don't ever give up, it will work!

Second best tip is for exercise to become part of your daily routine; even just walking will help, but it needs to be every day and at least an hour altogether. Just put your trainers on and go, no excuses.

manicmom · 18/04/2021 22:36

Well done for all the losses and sticking to it. It’s bloody hard work, isn’t it? I’m now 19st 11lbs, so down 5lbs this week. Really happy with that. I really need to start adding some exercise in though. I had booked the gym for today, but my anxiety got in the way of me going. I plan to take the dog for lots of walks this week.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 18/04/2021 23:01

Wow emptyempire how long has it taken you? Your must have transformed your health prospects Halo

manicmom that’s an extraordinary loss for one week, no wonder you’re happy! Flowers

manicmom · 18/04/2021 23:15

Thanks @Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons Smile

Stellaris22 · 19/04/2021 07:50

manicmom I started at the gym last week and I was really nervous. But it was a surprisingly great experience so I'm actually looking forward to going again. Good luck! I'm also doing longer dog walks, so our dogs will be happy Smile

Well done on your weight loss, that's amazing.

wombatsandaplant · 19/04/2021 13:05

I lost 1.5kg this week. 1.5kg off being in the 160s. Very happy with that.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 19/04/2021 20:25

Well done on all the great losses.

I lost 3lbs this week, bringing my total loss to 4 stones since the start of the year.

I am having a few days off this week, I'm going out with some friends, 2 nights in a row no less. So exciting, almost feels normal. I'm torn now over what to wear, whether to be able to show off how much weight I've lost or be wrapped up in enough layers to keep warm, but no-one will notice Grin.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 20/04/2021 23:46

Fab losses wombatsandaplant & Thisseatisnotavailable 🎉🎉🎉

Haha This what an wonderful dilemma although I think I’d go for warmth as it’s really cold here again - plus even more wow next time 😆

I fell into a loaf of bread today 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was so careful about not stress eating before seeing my mother that I took my eye off the ball for the “relief it’s over” eating 😂 what a waste of one of my wildcards!
Onwards...

Stellaris22 · 21/04/2021 07:46

I've lost another 2lbs since my last weigh in, bringing total loss to 12 lbs. But I'm disappointed as I don't feel any lighter, I'm glad the scales show I am but my clothes aren't any looser feeling.

manicmom · 21/04/2021 20:16

Thanks @Stellaris22 and well done on your loss too. 12lbs off is excellent! You should feel so proud of yourself Smile It’s good hear that you got on well at the gym. I’ve booked to go on Saturday and I’m really going to force myself this time. I’m sure I’ll be find once I get into it.

FlatEarthling · 23/04/2021 08:19

Well, that's a waste of 3 weeks of my life

I'm actually up by 10lbs not 7 as I'd lost a few extra pounds before it went pear shaped.

Interestingly my resting heart rate has gone up too. I'd started at 74
It had come down to 64 and is now around 74 again.
I haven't dared look at my blood pressure.

I'm not feeling that iron determination I had a month ago but I feel physically worse than when it was going well.
Although I have got cystitis too.

Sigh...

I'm not sure what I'm going to do, other than try to be 'good'
I'm contemplating meal replacement shakes or even Mysimba diet pills, although my blood pressure might not like that.

chalkyc2 · 23/04/2021 08:38

@FlatEarthling - oh dear. Ok - I'm not one to talk I know you have to be in the right head place for weight loss. Sorry I can't remember are you following a specific plan (ww etc)? I thought about shakes at one point but I was worried they would kind of mean I could never eat normal food again.

I have had 2 moments in my adult life when I have been successful at losing weight. First time in twenties - well I was young I just stopped eating crisps. Second time - post kids - I got myself a personal trainer and joined a run club and worked out hard and was weighed by the PT every week. I loved it, lost 30kg. But couldn't afford the PT forever, hurt my ankle and stopped running, and +45kg here I find myself. Now I've lost 16kg on the Fast 800 - but honestly it's a faffy plan - loads of cooking - no way I could do it if I wasn't working at home, and husband has joined me.

I don't know what I'm trying to say other than you need to find something that works for you in your life right now. I'm currently resisting the urge to fall off the wagon as life opens up and friends want to meet for drinks.

FlatEarthling · 23/04/2021 09:17

@chalkyc2 No specific diet. I'd been cutting back and cutting down, making swaps to things like jelly instead of ice cream, lower fat stuff and I was trying to exercise more.

I'm the family cook so if I don't cook no one will eat.
No support at all on my diet. Everyone here is thin.
DH didn't question me going back for a second Magnum last night.

I'm intelligent, educated and professional.
But food is my total nemesis.

chalkyc2 · 23/04/2021 10:00

I know what you mean I cook for my family too - my kids have always been fussy and I've always done them a separate meal. The good thing is that it means I'm in control of the food and the shopping! I'm very all or nothing I think - I've made myself a rule of no sugar - so not even lower fat/artificial sweeteners etc - and no complex carbs. Which actually is often fine for a family meal of say spaghetti bolognese as 3 people could have nice full plates and I could have some bolognese and salad. Greek yog and berries for pudding but everyone else can have whatever. And no snacks ever and no juice or drinks other than water and tea.

And in the back of my head there's the covid/obesity link and other health links and the fact I love shopping and nothing bloody fits and that my boys are 10 and 12 and I don't want them to be embarrassed of me and I need to keep up with them - we like to ride bikes and get out. And soon I'm going to have to face my professional world again and I don't want to be the only fat woman in the room again.

FatCatThinCat · 24/04/2021 09:13

In our house we all eat the same. I decide what we're having and everyone eats it without complaint. Because I'm scary.

Anyway this week I've managed to lose a whopping 0.2 kg. I'm actually happy about that as I'm full of cold and have lived off chocolate biscuits since Wednesday. I thought I'd have a massive gain this week.
