Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

I would like to join please!

I have struggled with weight all my life, have had periods of being very slim, to biggest ever Jan 2020 and everything in between!

I started WW online on 28th December and have lost exactly a stone in four weeks. This is usually the point I give up, but I’m definitely going to keep going this time as I can already really feel a difference.

I love WW and it is what kept me slim for years, it’s the only one that works for me, but in recent times I have just not stuck to it and unfortunately I gain weight VERY quickly!

I need to lose a further 2st 1lb to get my BMI under 40, and I’d like that down by Easter ideally. Then I’d like to lose another few stone after that.

I like WW because nothing is off limits but the way ‘points’ are structured it does naturally encourage you to eat better. In the last month I’ve eaten treats but also eaten really healthy meals and it’s sustainable.

Good luck to all!

Avelandra · 25/01/2021 17:04

I'll join too! I joined slimming world on the 16th of Jan. I started at 248lbs and am 5ft4 so a BMI of just over 42

Endogal · 25/01/2021 17:20

Hey can I join in too please! Decided enough is enough, weighed myself this morn and currently 222lbs and I'm only 4ft11, my BMI is 45! Was pretty mortified but not beating myself up- positive pants on!

I get married in 10 weeks (if we even can!) so hoping to shift a fair whack by then :) been reading about Michael Mosleys fast 800 so I'm giving a VLCD a go to shift a good amount and curb my sugar/ takeaway addiction then look to a more sustainable method! My joints ache sometimes (I'm only 26!) and we are looking to TTC after the wedding so I want to get my weight under control.

Doing OK so far today: wasn't hungry at breakfast then had soup for lunch (200 cals) and some popcorn to snack on (80 cals), dinner is a chicken stir fry which will be about 440 so I'll be pretty much bang on today taking a couple of hot drinks with milk into account!

Want to start exercising again, will aim to walk an hour each day but didn't want to go too hard on day 1 so distracting myself from wanting to snack with a bath!

EightToSixer · 25/01/2021 17:23

I’d like to join you. I’m 46, unsure if BMI currently but I’m 276lbs and 5’ 2”.

I’ve lost 56lbs in 5 months and before this my BMI was almost 60. (330lbs)
I’m on keto, doing intermittent fasting and very low carbs. I’m also walking every day, doing step bets and on a conqueror challenge virtually walking 3996 miles of Route66. I’m waiting for knee surgery so can’t do anything much other than walking but I’ve gone from struggling to walk 1km to managing 10km sometimes.
My weight loss has slowed to 1lb a week this month which is frustrating as it was faster pre-Christmas but I’m keeping on at it.

TrinityWaves · 25/01/2021 18:13

FlatEarthling - unfortunately I can't stand the taste of diet coke or pepsi. I've lost weight in the past where I had 1 can a day of the original, I know it's not healthy but I actually snack more if I don't have it, I just have to count it into my calories!

Just a quick update from me, I’ve had bagel and a banana so far today, and I’ve done 70mins just dance and a 20 min YouTube workout!

@hopingforabrighterfuture2021 Well done on your loss so far .. what colour plan of WW are you on? And how many points do you have? I’m really enjoying WW just hope I get the results!!

Mooey89 · 25/01/2021 19:18

Today I’ve had a bad eating day Blush
Hot cross bun with lurpak
Cheese sandwich
Pesto melt thing with veg (half)
Hot chocolate 🙈🤦🏼‍♀️
Did do a big walk though

Mooey89 · 25/01/2021 19:19

@Eliards2012 that’s not a lot of food! What for dinner?

FlatEarthling · 25/01/2021 19:20

I'm not eating again today.
I had a big dinner with rice and potatoes.
I also had the world's largest pear!

So altogether today, too many carbs, no exercise and probably high calories but it's the best I've eaten in weeks.

Eliards2012 · 25/01/2021 19:29

@Mooey89 no that was for breakfast, I’m having a roast for dinner Smile

Happycow · 25/01/2021 19:39

Hi everyone ! Id like to join you for accountability... i currently have a bmi of 41.5 (im 245lb). Ive been overweight drom about 3yrs old and am very much an emotional eater. I can easily stow in one evening snacking the same as i do throughout the day Blush

I am currently low carbing (day 1; lost a bit when on the GD diet while pregnant). I may try 16:8 or 15:9 once i get into the swing of things. Ive just had enough of looking 9 months pregnant all the time. I am happy and confident in every aspect of my life apart from how i look. Times must change!

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 25/01/2021 20:30

@Eliards2012 I’m on green as I find that the best one for me. I have 52 points at the moment plus weeklies. What about you?

Typical week day for me is something like:

Breakfast: iced coffee and a KIND bar OR a protein bagel and spread with marmite.

Lunch: always have a big salad with various things in as well as the standard lettuce/cucumber and tomatoes so today was roast beef, olives and reduced fat coleslaw along with lettuce/cucumber/tomatoes. Then I usually have either a pack of baked crisps or a small chocolate biscuit.

Dinner is nearly always protein with loads of veg and little/no carbs. Tonight was roast chicken, broccoli, green beans a couple of Yorkshire puddings and gravy. No potatoes. Other times things like chicken stir fry, salmon or other fish and veg, low fat burgers and salad etc.

Then other points I will use on milk in coffee and tea and a few treats.

As I lose weight and lose points I cut the treats back so still have enough points to eat healthily and well. I am much better if I can have a few treats- but this time round am trying to use less points on them! Hope that helps.

Eliards2012 · 25/01/2021 21:25

@hopingforabrighterfuture2021 sounds like we are doing pretty similar ..

Im also on green and I have 57 points per day and my weeklies and fit points - but I don’t use my weeklies or fit points and try to stay under 57 each day as that really is plenty.

Breakfast - I generally have a coffee (tassimo) then weetabix or porridge with fruit

Lunch - a bagel thin with salad stuff and cheese triangle or sliced chicken etc, piece of fruit, wotsits and a small treat normally the little lunch box malt loaf things.

Dinner - is generally loads of veg and meat and very little carbs ... like tonight I had roast pork, mixed veggies, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Other meals might be spag Bol with loads of veg with cauli rice, salmon and veg, stir frys (I generally avoid potatoes, pasta etc).

Sometimes I mix things around and will have a fruit bagel before bed or have my cereal then if Im struggling or it’s totm as evenings are when I’m likely to pick so by having something filling then seems to keep me in control.

Endogal · 26/01/2021 12:23

How's everyone getting on today? :)

So far I've had:
A coffee
A peach (wasn't really hungry at breakfast)
Some Tuna, sweetcorn, light mayo and salad leaves

Dinner will be smoked salmon fillet with roasted Mediterranean veg

Going to get out for a walk this afternoon once I've finished work!

Eliards2012 · 26/01/2021 13:47

@Endogal

Sounds like your having a good day!

Breakfast was weetabix with a banana and 2 coffees

Lunch - some noodles, a pear and a little malt loaf

Not sure about dinner yet.

I will be doing another YouTube work out and some just dance as soon as we have finished homeschooling.

How is everyone else getting?

FlatEarthling · 26/01/2021 14:33

Instant hot chocolate

Homemade French bread pizza and humous.

Pie, chips and peas planned for dinner. Doesn't sound very diet friendly. Will have small portion and lots of peas.

If I manage another day with no snacks I'm happy enough with the food as it's more like a normal person will eat.

Endogal · 26/01/2021 16:12

It looks like it's been a good day for you too so far @Eliards2012! I've sacked off my walk because it's raining... Might do a YouTube workout if I feel like it in a bit!

That's great @FlatEarthling well done on the snacking so far!!! That's the hardest habit to break at first :D

Eliards2012 · 26/01/2021 16:51

@Endogal there’s lots of YouTube “walks” I like the up to the beat fit ones, I’ve done one of those today and an hour just dance, really feeling it now my legs ache Grin

@FlatEarthling cutting the snacks out is a huge step forward as you are gaining the control back.

TrinityWaves · 26/01/2021 19:16

Hi everyone, I'm doing really well on curbing the snacking again today!

Eliards2012 · 26/01/2021 19:18

@TrinityWaves well done!!

jitt3rbug · 26/01/2021 20:20

I'm in.

I haven't read everything here yet but I'm frightened I'll chicken out and not bother if I leave writing this post until later. BMI of around 40 but will double check it.

I have a really rubbish relationship with food and a history of anorexia and bulimia (as well as other mental health issues).

I don't own a single photo of me with any of my three dc other than one shot of me with each baby taken just after delivery.

I can't face video calls which has had an impact on my relationship with treasured friends and godchildren who live on the other side of the world. I've also put off flying to see them because I'm frightened I will need an extender belt on the 'plane and I think that would destroy me.

I take no interest in clothes any more and haven't worn make up in around nine years.

I don't want to be this me any more. I need to make a change and I think improving my physical health will help my head.

I'm hitting 'Post' before I bottle it.
Ps well done if you read to the end of this! 😳

FlatEarthling · 26/01/2021 20:24

I might take measurements tomorrow for a record.

I'm also considering an anonymous, headless before photo.

I'm sick of failed diets

Do that! You don't have to post it, but ih my! Just for yourself to see the difference. I made a photo few weeks after starting "everyone is doing it🤷🏻". I am glad I did. The difference was massive but I didn't see it in a mirror or feel it as much. Seeing the pics side by side. Do it
Eliards2012 · 26/01/2021 22:15

@jitt3rbug hello! So glad you posted before you bottled it!! I can relate to so many things you have said - I have 3 children and very very few photos of us all. I flew in Sept and was so scared about the seat belt not fitting didn’t stop reading online and measuring .. all was ok but I very nearly didn’t go because I was so scared of being embarrassed!! What do you plan to do?

@FlatEarthling definitely take pictures and do measurements .. I know when I lost weight before it really help to keep me motivated when the loss on the scales was small yet I had lost inches or to compare before and after pictures.

Dinner for me was a WW lasagne with cucumber and mushrooms. I’ve got a few points left for a treat this evening and as I’m due on I’m keeping them for as late as possible. I don’t sleep well and that’s when I am most likely to pick at naughty food whereas if I know I’ve got something I can have it helps me stay in control.

Hope everyone has had a good day!
