I'll join you. I've had a lovely Christmas but now really feeling uncomfortable with around 4 stone to lose. Can't gain any more so I'm starting tomorrow, just calorie counting with mfp.

dementedma · 26/12/2018 08:20

wow FATE. Amazing. So, how did you do it and how did you stick to it?

FATEdestiny · 26/12/2018 09:41

how did you do it and how did you stick to it?

I think mainly because I'm an "all or nothing" type of person. If I put my mind to something then I give it my everything. I've never dieted in my life before, this is my first conscious decision to lose weight, and I've lost 8 stone.

I don't think of this as a diet, it's a change in the way I think about food as fuel and exercising for heart health. I've no end-point because I don't intend to change from what I do now.

BurningTheToast · 26/12/2018 10:45

That's really impressive @FATE - well done.

Looking at your chart, I see you broke things down to monthly challenges. Did that feel more achievable? And I suppose when you do it, each month you can celebrate another stage in the process.

I think I'll try that - January's goal is no wine (because it's empty calories and means that I nibble), no chocolate, and at least 3 bouts of exercise per week. Let's see how that goes...

MrsSlocombesPussy · 26/12/2018 11:05

I think I'll be starting on 3rd January when the DCs go back to school.

We're off to spend a few days with the ILs tomorrow so there's not much chance of healthy eating there.

FATEdestiny · 26/12/2018 11:28

When i started I had no idea if take to exercise like I did. Initially I has a long list of weight relates targets:

  • each half stone loss
  • each new stone barrier
  • I used the NHS BMI calculator to work out weights needed to get under 40, 35, 30 and so on.
  • I worked out percentages of my total loss to get to healthy BMI. Then I was able to work out what weight I needed to be to have done 25% of total loss, 50% and so on.
  • I worked out percentages of my total original body weight. Then I could work out when I lost 10% of my body weight, 15%, 20% and so on.

So in January last year I must have had a long bullet point list of 30 or 40 weight related targets to hit, listed in the order i'd get them. In the early months I achieved a target of some sorts each fortnight or so. In later months I was still getting at least 1 target a month and even started skimming off less important targets as I progressed.

My first exercise target came from discovering Race at Your Pace. I didn't make a payment to log my pledge with them, but decided to use the premise to promise myself I'd walk every day in February then track my mileage and walk 100 miles in March. My exercise targets grew from there.

I never realised the progress I would make in running so I wouldn't have dreamed it possible to do what I have done. The targets were therefore set on a monthly basis, given I was genuinely bemused that my body was capable of achieving these things. I simply set them as my next challenge as I was going along.

Gymntonic · 26/12/2018 12:33

Can I join too please. Lost a couple of stone in last year or so. Another stone or so would be fantastic. Need to refocus so looking forward to reading how everyone is planning to lose weight. Am park running and walking lots - doing a big hill walk in July with friends. Menopausal here too so it's the diet I need to sort 😬

Fairypiggy · 26/12/2018 15:35

I would like to join. I have gained 2 stone in the last year and now my BMI is 39. I am really feeling the effects of the extra weight. My joints hurt and I get short of breath on walking. I was thinking of trying the 5:2 diet. Had some success in WW in the past but found I put the weight back on after stopping each time.

runforthehillsandscream · 26/12/2018 15:46

Me!! I'm going wedding dress shopping so have a fair bit to lose by March/April!

Rockchick1984 · 26/12/2018 18:32

Can I join in too please? Starting tomorrow I need to lose at least 4 stone, ideally 5 Sad and I want to be at target weight by next Christmas.

Planning to start back at the gym, and eating healthier / no more take away!

SpikyHedgehogg · 26/12/2018 21:19

FATE how did your eating change? Congratulations on your amazing achievement.

Need to refocus so looking forward to reading how everyone is planning to lose weight.

I'm going to take it a month at a time, focusing on a few changes each month and then reflecting before setting goals for the following month.

This month I quit Diet Coke, so next month I'll be cutting out sugar and reducing what I call floury carbs (bread, pasta, pastry, pizza base etc). I'm going to aim to eat a wider variety of vegetables and one oily fish portion a week.

melissasummerfield · 26/12/2018 21:36

Me too please!

Have about 9 stone to lose Blush and equally important i want to be fit.

Going to be calorie counting / mfp

Bringbackthestrioes · 26/12/2018 21:43

joining!

ItsalmostSummer · 26/12/2018 22:13

I’m starting the first week with increasing my water intake, cutting back on sugars, and going no grains again. I only started back on sugar and grains for November and December. Prior to that it was just over a year with no sugar/no grains for me, so back to it I go. I cannot start running again for two weeks so it will the new year when I start that. Best of luck everyone.

ItsalmostSummer · 26/12/2018 22:14

Ps I like the goals you set FATE. Great idea. Thanks.

LostaraYil · 26/12/2018 23:06

I'd like to join please! I have 10-15 lbs to lose, and I will try logging food on mfp starting Jan 1st and going to the gym at least 2x a week. Going to be 40 in April and I want to feel comfortable in my clothes by then and tone up a bit!

fatcatshavemorefun · 26/12/2018 23:11

Can I join please? Since this time last year I've lost a stone. Re-started the diet 2 weeks ago and lost 2kg. I have another 1.5 stone to go by March to fit into my wedding dress Blush
I have re-started exercising (did C25K last year but have lost a lot of fitness since then - managed a very, very slow 5km today so hoping to improve on that time and distance over the next couple of months). I already drink a lot of water and walk at least 10,000 steps a day but have a very sedentary job...

hussherbye · 26/12/2018 23:28

Me me me!!

Will weigh in tomorrow...or the next day Grin

Jaimx86 · 26/12/2018 23:38

I’d love to get my bmi to 19.5-20 by end of Jan/mid Feb. Feeling a bit chuberly at 21.22 currently. Plan to cut down on daily desserts after NYE

RedPandaMama · 26/12/2018 23:40

Checked my BMI and didn't realise how bad things had gotten. Sad when I got pregnant 2 years ago it was 29. Now 35.

Need to lose 5 stone to be in healthy category.

Gymntonic · 27/12/2018 08:37

Have weighed in this morning. A nice round 20 pounds to lose😬.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 27/12/2018 10:18

Me too please. Have around 4 stones to lose. I’m 50 in 6 months so would like to be a good way to target by then. More water, dry January, cutting down on junk food is my plan.

FATEdestiny · 27/12/2018 10:18

FATEhow did your eating change?

I didn't follow any commercial diet, just worked on the basis that I am an intelligent woman and know the things that are healthy and the things that are not. So I ate the healthy stuff.

Some key decisions I made in terms of food were:

  • I only eat at meal times. I never , ever snack. Not eating in the evenings has reduced many calories for me.
  • I go for low fat options (low fat milk, yoghurt, no cheese, lean meat, pulses for protein)
  • I eat low carb (not no carb). The carbs I do have come from fruit/veg/pulses, I rarely eat anything that is pure carbs.
  • I have cut sugar, mainly by virtue of not snacking. Apart from Sunday (see below) I don't eat processes sugar, such as cake, biscuits, chocolate etc
  • Sunday dinner is my treat meal. It's the only time I have potatoes and a pudding.
  • I rarely eat breakfast, simply because I recognise I'm not hungry. This is dispute the fact that I run about 10km most mornings on an empty stomach.
  • Unless I do a large morning run (more than 15km), I just eat at 12pm and 5.30pm.

What is most important, I think, is that everyone in the family eats the same meals. This includes my children (4 between 4-14) and DH. So it's not as if I have a special diet. This is a change for our whole family. So i dont have any intention of going back to how we used to eat. I make some concessions for the children - they have brown bread or wraps for example, while DH and I don't.

HTH

RedPandaMama · 27/12/2018 10:29

@FATEdestiny it's amazing you've managed to lose so much weight, seriously well done to you, but reading your last post I don't think that's achievable or healthy for most people.

You eat 2 meals a day made up of lean meat and veg and occasionally pulses, no desserts or snacks, and run 10k+ a day. I don't see how that's sustainable long term without your body just giving up.

CarrotPuff · 27/12/2018 10:34

The moment of truth this morning revealed 11.3. I need to lose 2st to get to my pre-pregnancy weight of 9.3, although ideally I'd like to lose another 7-10lbs on top of that.

First mini target is to get under 11st, so 4 lbs off. Hopefully I'll get there by mid Jan.

This morning didn't start so well, already had half a banana and a couple biscuits 🙈 will draw the line here and no snacking until lunch!

Off to drink some water now and hang the laundry.
