Here is the new thread for us to achieve success in Xmas Smile

Old thread is here

I'll change my name to my "Christmas" one after Saturday: I'm helping to organise the Scottish Mumsnet Christmas meet-up and it might confuse things if I change my name.

OP posts:

It does all look rather beautiful Pretty, but not when it is relentless!

I just looked at Glasgow's weather forecast and it does look to get to +8 at the weekend, so hopefully things might begin to return to normal?!

prettybirdinapeartree · 07/12/2010 16:24

Think it will take more than a weekend for the ice to go. Dh has just cleared 6 inches of ice to make a safe path to the door (we had cleared the driveway for the cars but had left the last little bit to the door where we were walking on the compacted ice snow. The local roads will have at least that on them.

You can see the depth of the ice because there are "holes" where the stank (sewer) covers are, which are snow and ice free due to the heat coming up from the sewers! Grin

bebeinamanger · 07/12/2010 16:24

It does look lovely & I am a tiny bit Xmas Envy

I bet it is starting to get a tad annoying now though, although that may be down to the local authorities rather than the snow! Hmm

I wouldn't mind it being so cold here if there was snow. Although the frost was stunningly beautiful this morning :)

Another mum this morning said we didn't get snow here because it was too cold!! (It has been colder than parts that did get snow) Confused Erm, it's colder in Russia & Scandinavia & Alaska & they get snow!!! Hmm Or am I being stupid?!

prettybirdinapeartree · 07/12/2010 16:27

She is partially right. Sometimes the weather system is a high pressure over us - which in winter means very cold - but to get snow we need a "warm" Hmm front to go over which carries the precipitation in the form of snow.

bebeinamanger · 07/12/2010 18:32

But that wouldn't just affect one region would it Hmm We got rain, even though the temperature was below freezing!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/12/2010 21:45

pics are lovely :)

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 08/12/2010 07:59

Sigh

Had to go to a meeting at school last night. DH v kindly made supper ( ie bought an M&S meal) for when I got back but it was full on moussaka. Really nice but not exactly slinky. I didn't really want anything cos it was late. Sigh.

GettinTrimmer · 08/12/2010 12:28

I don't think that's too bad Piste, the munchies are worse.

Pretty, gorgeous photos Xmas Smile

Just had a load of cards through the door with some of those round robins Xmas Biscuit x4 sides of A4 to wade through.

I am doing alright today, toast for breakfast then lunch was an omelette. Just fruit inbetween then quorn chilli and rice for tea, but did promise apple crumble tonight (with cream).

GettinTrimmer · 08/12/2010 12:30

Every time I see your name Piste my mouth waters for mulled wine, it's the only time I drink red. There is a gorgeous recipe in Nigella's Domestic Goddess book for it, made with earl grey tea, spices and fruity stuff.

GettinTrimmer · 08/12/2010 12:31

I hope there's more thawing today for you blondes.

prettybirdinapeartree · 08/12/2010 12:38

Just been out in the car: not fun. Even the main roads are covered in a couple of inches of solid ice, with intermittent holes, so they are really rutted.

Our own street has at least 6 inches of compacted ice: but at least it is quiet, wide (apart from the abandoned cars) and flat.

I was using all my "driving on snow and ice" skill: high grears, low revs, maintaining a steady momentum, no braking, very gentle turning...... still skidded/wheel spun a wee bit a couple of times.

prettybirdinapeartree · 08/12/2010 12:40

Oh - and accroding to the car, it is still minus 10 Shock

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/12/2010 12:58

360* with kids in car and mb last night - kids thought it was 'wicked'

today we have run very low of oil and cant get a tanker for a while and there is going to be a blue blonde :(

prettybirdinapeartree · 08/12/2010 13:05
Shock

Dh had laughed at me when I had suggested a few weeks ago that we should think of putting on winter tyres. I wish we had now!

bebeinamanger · 08/12/2010 13:06

We have...wait for....sun! And blue sky!! Shock Has been at least a week since the sky wasn't white all day! Took some lovely pics of the frosty countryside round our way this morning, just looked so pretty Xmas Smile

Blondes Shock I bet that was seriously scray, hope you are ok?

Pretty - You go steady on those roads! Terrifying! (That being said, my nightmare condition is fog at night, ice doesn't fill me with the same dread!!)

Making a choc cake today, but shall be very restrained and not have any til after dinner, and then it will only be a very small slice! Had a mince pie at toddler Christmas party. But hadn't had breakfast as was running mega late! Blush If I can still sts I will be happy. Maintaining is hard! Wink I just want to eat crap again!! Blush

prettybirdinapeartree · 08/12/2010 13:18

It is gloriously sunny here today - even brighter than yesterday. But bloody cold.

bebeinamanger · 08/12/2010 13:36

Is warmer here than it was yesterday, but still below freezing! Although not as cold as in Scotland! Was -10 here overnight though! Cold enough for us 'southern softies' Xmas Wink

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/12/2010 19:32

yes im fine thx :)

there were a few flakes of snow this afternoon ......

bebeinamanger · 08/12/2010 21:27

I got all excited this morning when I thought it was snowing....was just frost blowing off the trees! Blush Xmas Grin

bebeinamanger · 09/12/2010 07:40

Hardly slept! :( So nervous bout doctors later today, plus DD is having nightmares alot at the moment (about snowmen, triggered by cBeebies stupid Winter song) :(

Going to try & be good today, lets just hope nerves keep the munchies at bay!! Xmas Hmm

GettinTrimmer · 09/12/2010 09:11

Good luck Bebe, let us know how you get on.

Pretty, how are you faring?

blondes, hope you've woken up to more thawing.

I scraped my car badly, coming up my drive back from parents' evening for ds, taken a couple of gouges out from next door's wall. neighbours are elderly and their wall is their pride and joy and don't know what my car will cost Sad

Parents' evening was fine, no swearing in class like I was imagining, ds was making it out to be much worse than it is. Although he is being silly with his friends. He's doing well - handwriting, a very difficult one for him, has much improved Smile and he's writing some lovely stories.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2010 09:41

good luck bebe

sorry about car trimmer - hope not to expensive

off to dentist today - lost a filling a while back and then appointment got cancelled coz of snow and finally going today

gonna cost a shit load no doubt :( but prob good for my diet as cant eat lol

prettybirdinapeartree · 09/12/2010 09:55

Not been "in the zone" diet wise this week :( Getting a bit of cabin fever. DS is off school again - police are still advising agaisnt anything but essential travel.

Weather forecast is improving though: looks like the next 5 days will be above zero Shock with Saturday the temperature reaching a whole six degress ShockShock

Dh has just venured out for a hospital appointment (the follow-up one after a knee operation that was doen 7 weeks ago). He has planned a route that does not involve any hills Grin - and if he needs to, he can walk the last bit.

prettybirdinapeartree · 09/12/2010 09:57

:( Trimmer: you always feel so pissed off at yuorself after incidents like that. Hope the damage, both to your wallet and to the neighbours isn't as bad as you fear.

Bebe and Blondes - hope your respective appointments go well. :)

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 09/12/2010 16:07

Oh Trim, what a pain for you. How annoying. Sad

Bebe and Blondes and Mr Pretty - hope your medical situations are sorted now.

I have been so erratic foodwise this week. On Saturday we ate before the concert, 3.30ish, then because of the show I didn't get around to eating until Sunday evening. I suddenly realised I felt weirdly hollow, it had been over 24hours! It's been odd like that all week, twice this week it's been after 10pm when we've eaten. I'm so busy in our home life and through the DC school and my work that I am very far from an even keel.

I think I need a kick up the arse to get me back on track! Anyone oblige?!
