Couldn't see a thread for may but hoping I can find fellow starters to chat with. I've opted to go with SheMed and have just received my blood test kit through so should be starting within the next week or 2!

Sending positive thoughts to everyone revving up for their first jab tomorrow!

I'll be weighing in and then taking my second jab. I'm a bit more nervous about that purely because this week has been so luckily SE free, but I'll have more of the medication in my system going forward. Hoping my lucky streak continues, but also glad it's a bank holiday weekend in case I'm a bit crook.

I do have a couple of BBQ invites, which should be easy enough to manage food wise compared to a sit-down meal.

What surprised me the last time I took MJ (for a month last year) was how it absolutely knocks any desire for alcohol on the head for me. Not a bad thing, just a strange SE that I didn't realise I had until someone presented me with a lovely glass of Sauv Blanc, and I almost heaved 😅

Gingefringe · 01/05/2025 20:24

I've just taken my first jab about an hour ago. Feeling nervous but also a bit excited at (hopefully) losing the 2 stone gained over the last few years.
I'm 62, 5'2" and 12 stone.

The jab was straightforward and painless.
Good luck everyone. x

We're about the same height and weight. Menopause gave me two stone too! So kind 😂

It is scary at the start I know. I'm obsessing about it a bit having done the first jab on Tuesday. But realistically with time you will get used to it all and that's what I keep telling myself.

It is certainly helpful to read about the journey that others are on, but as you can see everybody has their own journey. Some have a few side effects, some none, some don't want to eat, some are now making better choices etc. etc.

One step at a time. You've made the first step in ordering, then you will do the first jab, the first week and so on and so forth. Good luck.

This if is great advice - thank you. I’ll try and take everything one step at a time

SeaEssence · 01/05/2025 21:22

Joining in if I may - just done my first jab. Haven't eaten very well today (though no more than 1500 cal), and was thinking to postpone till after the weekend, but then I thought it was a nice memorable date so fingers crossed the SE won't be too bad...hoping to lose about 20kg.

Kerrygirlie · 01/05/2025 21:46

Hi everyone,
I just joined Mumsnet today so I'm not quite sure how it works but here goes my first post. I'm 58, 5 foot 9 and weigh 14 st 12lbs. I had a bad accident last year and was immobile for almost 12 months so I've put on nearly 2 stone which I'm determined to shed as I feel and look terrible. Ideally I'd like to lose more than that and get down to about 11 stone so it's a long road ahead to lose nearly 4 stone. I took my first dose of 2.5g Mounjaro this morning and hope it makes doing so a little easier. I was nervous about injecting, I've actually had the pen for a few weeks but wanted to have a holiday in Spain before starting, but it was very straightforward and didn't hurt at all so those of you who haven't started yet shouldn't worry. I've joined this group for a bit of moral support and hope we can all encourage each other to keep going until we reach our targets and share advice/experiences. Here's hoping there side effects aren't too horrible, fingers crossed 🤞

Mels2025 · 02/05/2025 07:27

Ugh. So, took first dose Sunday afternoon. Felt great. Tues morning woke up early hours with a migraine (had before) and feeling sick, ended up throwing up for hours, sweating, shaking, panic attack. Eventually managed to get back in bed and slept. Ok since but not really eating, since just protein shakes.

I have suffered from panic attacks in the past, and being sick with it like this in the past. And I'm wondering if the migraine was brought on by caffeine withdrawal (which I did in case it made me sick! Then being sick from anxiety.

Before I was sick I completely overhauled my food, spent Sunday making food for the fridge and food wise I feel really in control.
Lost half stone this week, but that's also stress as dad was rushed into hospital on Tues daytime. He's home now. He's 84.

So...my question is, do you think the anxiety worrying about being sick (and then making myself then sick) is worth it? Should I just try and loose weight without mj?

I've still got 1 stone to loose so it's not a lot. I've high cholesterol with being overweight and BMI of 28 which is how I got mj.

Can I do it without? Then not think evey few hrs am I feeling sick??

Mounraine · 02/05/2025 07:34

Mel, I had a similar response in April with vomiting on day 4. There were complications and I ended up skipping week 2. My plan has been to try lower doses in weeks 3 and 4, and then give it another go this month. But if there are debilitating side effects then I'm quitting. I have about 2 more stone to lose.

SlippySausage · 02/05/2025 07:40

Okay done the injection. The hardest part was getting the lid off the pen - it was really stuck! I remembered something from when I had to self-inject insulin - it can help to imagine the tiny needle sliding into a pore rather than ‘piercing’ the skin.

Anyway, I’m 57, 5’3 tall, 12 stone 8, BMI 31.2. I want to get down to 9.5 stone and come off my blood pressure and diabetes meds.

I’m using the Shotsy app which I saw recommended on another thread. Good luck everyone!!

Sorry to hear you've had issues too

I was thinking the main bit about MJ is feeling full, surpressing appetite. So if I can ensure I'm in first a calorie deficit, then calorie maintainence I can loose a stone without MJ.?

Just being on it for a week, the SE I've had, it may be enough to give me the serious kick up the arse I needed?

Sorry about your sickness and your Dad. The migraine could easily have been caffeine withdrawal. The temptation will always be to attribute every thing to MJ. I posted yesterday that I’d been queasy and had a headache all day - BEFORE I took my first shot of MJ. If I’d taken the shot yesterday morning as I originally planned then I’d have def blamed the headache and sickness on MJ. But with so little to lose, maybe the worry of side effects outweighs the benefits?

Stephenkingsbiggestfan · 02/05/2025 08:10

I’d love to join please.

Had my first jab yesterday.

5ft 2 inches, 13 st 6lb. Waist 34. Blood sugar reading 5.8.

No side effects so far. Wondering if the lack of appetite is just because I spent £130 on the jab rather than the jab itself 🤣

I definitely feel more confident about losing the weight myself, just to avoid the bloody side effects! However, it was much easier on MJ (I lost 9lb in the month, but that was mostly from the week I was really ill) and now I've hit my usual plateau. So, for me, it seems worth giving it one more month.

Good luck, i'm about 2 hours ahead of you, same height, 20lbs heavier and 9 years older. Does that make us almost twins? 😆
I feel fine this morning - although really apprehensive - and not specially hungry. I'm not sure if that's the MJ or just a placebo effect.

AlicesMum2025 · 02/05/2025 10:07

Did my first injection last night before bed. Although I put a lot of thought into starting MJ I have not even thought about what I'm going to eat.

My diet is terrible which is why I've ended up so overweight so I can't really rely on eating my normal things but just smaller portions and seeing what my body can handle. I literally have no clue what to eat.

Tesco shop is being delivered today and literally all I did different this week was buy Greek yoghurt, Weetabix and almond milk - thinking I need protein and fibre.

How do I know what to eat? Literally, what do I need to put in my mouth today? Genuine question

Mounraine · 02/05/2025 10:09

@AlicesMum2025 I would recommend the Zoe Nutrition podcast - lots of advice about what to eat and what not to eat, how to eat, when to eat etc. without going extreme in any direction.

Hearditonapodcast · 02/05/2025 12:40

I did my first injection last night too, I found it the thought of doing it far worse than actually doing it! I already inject my asthma medication, so I'm not sure why I was so hesitant do this.

When it comes to food, I absolutely know what to eat, my knowledge of nutrition is very good (I was previously very fit and healthy before I developed severe asthma 13 years ago, and was hospitalised several times). My problem is I have no motivation to eat well, and when I was very unwell I got into terrible habits, which is what I'm hoping MJ will help me change. I can recommend The Doctors Kitchen, Zoe (and Tim Spector), The Gut Health Doctor and Glucose Goddess on Instagram.

If you're looking for a book recommendations, I'd personally start with Food Noise by Dr Jack Mosely, Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspe, and Why We Eat (Too Much) by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. For actual cookbooks, the 4 in the picture are my faves, particularly Eat More, Live Well. If you only want to start with one book, I'd go for Food Noise as it's most relevant to our 'Mounjaro Journey' as the TikTokkers call it 😂

I'm just under 19stone, 5'6 so I have a LOT to lose. So far today I've drunk 1.5 litres of water, and had a protein and fibre filled smoothie, which wasn't delicious but tolerable! Greek yoghurt, frozen berries, a splash of water to loosen, a scoop of hemp protein powder, some milled flax seeds and a pinch of salt.

My food noise hasn't totally disappeared yet, I'm still thinking about food but I don't seem to have the motivation to make any!

Lovecycling · 02/05/2025 15:57

I’d like to join too please. Did first jab of Mounjaro earlier this afternoon. The pen has been in my fridge for weeks as I was too scared of side effects but I’ve just gone for it. Relieved to be started as I’ve put on a lot of weight in the last year and it’s really getting me down. I had lost 3 stone and have put it all back on in 9 months. My body was driving me to eat and regain the weight and I realised for the first time that this is biological and led me to MJ.
Age 56, 5ft 5,
HW 255 lbs
CW 232 lbs, BMI 38.7
GW 1 - 179 lbs, BMI 29.8
GW 2 - 150 lbs, BMI 25

jp35 · 02/05/2025 16:00

Hello, I received my 2.5 mg first pen today and am going to use it this evening. I’m a bit apprehensive as to what to expect.

I have loads of questions.

How long does it take to notice any effect? I’m not convinced that 2.5mg will make any difference, but hope to be proved wrong. Have others lost any weight on the lowest dose?

Does everyone order the next months pen at about 2-3 weeks in to make sure it arrives in time? Do you then just order the next dose up?

What does everyone else eat while on mounjaro? Do you have your normal meals, but just a way smaller portion, or do are you all eating completely different foods? My current diet consists of 2 weetabix with milk in the morning, a salmon and cucumber sandwich, with a yoghurt, for lunch and something like salmon and new potatoes or a bolognaise for dinner (which I don’t think is excessive). I have oesophageal disease so I can’t eat large portions of anything anyway. I don’t snack, but I do like an occasional glass of wine. I firmly believe that weight gain has been down to pain medication as I don’t overeat.

These injections are a last resort. I used to exercise loads but had an accident 6 years ago (on an exercise machine of all places) which resulted in a permanent disability and affected my mobility. My weight has slowly crept up ever since.

Hi, thank you for asking. I’m nearly 24 hours in. Slept badly with lots of dizziness and nausea, so glad I injected before bed time. Definitely not got any interest in food today, but so far no worse side effects. My graph shows I should be peaking tomorrow. Long it may continue for us both!!

Mounraine · 02/05/2025 16:16

@jp35 I eat a whole-food, plant-based diet and minimise UPFs. I also do TRE to at least 16:8. So from your example, the weetabix, bread and pasta wouldn't be doing me any good. I'm not fussed about alcohol and only drink water.
Mounjaro has meant that I am no longer sabotaging my efforts with Pepsi Max, biscuits or chocolate. It's life-changing for me.

Peachblossom25 · 02/05/2025 17:01

I’ve just injected. The injection itself was absolutely fine, I couldn't even feel
it. But I’m so, so nervous about having some awful side effect this evening/tonight/tomorrow 😬 I can’t wait to be a couple of weeks in and over this first scary bit.

Good luck to everyone else who has injected in the last couple of days or is injecting tonight or over the weekend.

Herewegoagain80 · 02/05/2025 17:02

I did it! I had my first injection as soon as I finished work. I’m desperately trying not to have a whole host of imaginary side effects now.

I really hope this works for me. Like a lot of you, I feel this is the last chance saloon to get my weight under control. Good luck to you all and let’s see what May brings.

LessWeightKate · 02/05/2025 17:06

@jp35 I think most providers prompt you when it's time to reorder but it's a good idea to allow enough time just in case of bank holidays/your own holidays etc.

As for food, I find a smaller portion of normal meals is fine as long as it isn't anything too oily/cheesy which gives me heartburn at night while on MJ.

The nice thing is that healthy food is all that appeals (to me.) I haven't snacked once all week.

It sounds like we eat similarly. One thing that helped me a lot the last time I was on MJ and felt icky in the morning was having half a glass of orange juice first thing. Knocked any queasiness right on the head!

I hope all goes well for you!
