Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

@PissedOffNeighbour22 thank you - feel very deflated by the weight at the moment so very excited to start this and hopefully feel more positive with summer coming.

that’s great news about your 2.5 loss so far - good luck with the rest, sounds like you’re doing fab!

Lanawashington · 04/05/2024 19:09

Has anyone had any problems with fizzy drinks? I had a normal breakfast today then this afternoon had half a pint of Pepsi max at the pub and omg about 30 minutes later I had the worst stomach cramps ever and had to leave! Was in so much pain. It’s the first time I’ve had anything fizzy since starting. Not sure if it was just a coincidence but I won’t be doing it again!

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/05/2024 19:28

I have taken my 5th (bonus) jab from my 2.5 pen.
Looking forward to going up to 5mg pen on Wednesday as feel the effects are not as they were.

Sunfl0wer20 · 04/05/2024 20:45

Could I join you guys?

I took my first injection of wegovy on Thursday night.
It hasn’t cut the food noise totally for me, which is the biggest thing for me.
food for me is like cigarettes for a smoker, if I’m not eating I am constantly thinking about what I am going to eat next. My life revolves around what I am going to eat and it’s all the wrong foods. If I go anywhere I am thinking about what restaurants there are there.

I am making better choices because I feel like I am in the zone right now and am eating less but I’m still constantly thinking about eating. I really hope this changes as it’s really getting me down.

i have roughly 5st to loose and until reading here I thought was really unachievable.

RMNofTikTok · 04/05/2024 20:53

I'm really struggling.

I've managed 5 mouthfuls of dinner and that was it.

Food noise has completely gone, I've got no appetite, and I don't know how I feel about it.

Food was such a bit part of my life, it's weird not thinking about it, I almost feel a bit crazy for admitting it but I feel quite sad that I thought I was lazy/greedy for years and I didn't realise that this was part of obesity.

It's also strangely reduced my urge to vape and have my night cap!

I know what you mean.
DH and I are going on a long awaited date night tonight and I've booked my favourite restaurant, but I am thinking of cancelling as I know it'll be a waste of money. I struggled to eat half a bowl of ramen last night which was mainly broth!

I am still enjoying planning and cooking but then sit down to eat and am completely bored after a few mouthfuls.

But I'm hopeful that this may change my mindset about food long term, even after the injections stop, because I can't afford to spend £££ every month for the rest of my life.

It's not stopped me drinking though (think I'm surviving on the wine calories!) but I do think I'm drinking less, again fancying a drink but getting bored and full where I would normally not stop until the bottle is gone.

I'm feeling positive on the whole though, looking forward to looking in the mirror and perhaps seeing the old (real?) me again.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 05/05/2024 07:23

Don’t cancel the restaurant, @Eminybob! It will only be a waste of money if you order your old quantities of food. Order a starter, something really delicious like seafood, and focus on what the evening comprises when it’s not 100% about the food: time with DH, being out of the house, child-free (if that’s relevant to you) etc.

I’m sorry you are struggling @RMNofTikTok. I am certainly noticing that I am having to feel my feelings a lot more without my previous crutches of food and booze to push them down. I’m trying to find productive ways to apply my new-found headspace which would previously have gone on thinking about food. I’ve read three books this week!

Aha! Glad to have found this thread and thank you all for sharing your stories so far. I took the plunge and ordered Wegovy last night after realising I need to give my willpower some help.

I need to lose about 5.5 stone (I'm 5 ft 6), but in my head for years have assumed I 'only' needed to lose 3, not taking account of the fact my weight has gone up over last 2 years due to stress. Somehow due to already being a bit large, getting a bit larger wasn't so noticeable. I've got lots to do to fill the time when I would have otherwise been eating and I really really want to have a 'normal' relationship with food so I really want this to give me the headspace to do that.

Dogsbreath7 · 05/05/2024 08:28

Welcome to all the newbies. Seems a trend that people are starting on wegovy and wondered why? When I made the snap decision 2 months ago to at least try this my my ‘research’ came to conclusion Mounjaro was better - greater weight loss, fewer side effects- and possibly less guilt I would be using a rebranded diabetes drug. I get those who started before Mounjaro was available.

so reasons for your choice of drug?

I'm at the top of the waiting list for fat clinic, and they only offer Wegovy. Otherwise I would use the other one.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to lose weight at the moment. So far I've lost a few lbs under 2 stone. I've got about 5 stone left to lose. Do you know how I would qualify for ozempic or similar?
Thank you in advance!

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 05/05/2024 09:34

@whatthejuice Ozempic is a brand name of semaglutide. It is only licensed in the UK for diabetes. The UK-licensed semaglutide drug for weight loss is Wegovy. Some of us are taking Mounjaro, which is the brand name of tirzapetide, which works in a slightly different way.

I think that I’m correct in saying that all of us on this thread are paying privately for our medication. It is possible to be prescribed semaglutide (Wegovy) or liraglutide (Saxenda) on the NHS but this has to be done via a specialist weight management service and waiting lists are long.

You will need to read up on the drugs and decide which one is right for you. If you have a BMI over 30 you will be able to access them privately. The first post of the long-running Wegovy / Mounjaro thread on this board has a good overview and links to the pharmacies where MNers are buying their private prescriptions. I hope this helps.

It depends on what your bmi is, what area you live in and what the CCG policy is. I've been waiting 2.5 years for my appointment though!

zaffa · 05/05/2024 09:43

Me! I have 10 stone to loose to be middle of my BMi. In reality I'm aiming for a final target of eight stone, which will put my as overweight but not obese.
I've been overweight all my life but not like this. I've lost loads before but piled it back on since covid and a baby and I'm the heaviest I think I have ever been.
So I've lost two stone so far - and people are starting to notice but I have loads before people would say wow: you've really lost weight.

RMNofTikTok · 05/05/2024 09:45

@VelociraptorsVelociRapping I've started privately but I had a missed call from weight loss services on Friday so I'm likely to be nhs funded imminently, because my BMI is 50. I'm eligible for surgery, but I want to give GLP1s a good go first!

catgirl1976 · 05/05/2024 10:28

I think my scales are faulty. They are saying I’ve lost 6lb since friday and I’ve got my first goal of seeing a 14 at the start of my weight. I don’t think that can be tight but it gave me a little boost. I’ll see what they say after a week. I’ve drink a load of water just in case I’m dehydrated and I’ll make sure I’m drinking at least two litres a day. I did notice my wee was quite dark this morning (sorry tmi). So going to really focus on hydration today.

Other than that no side effects yet which is encouraging. Weirdly my Pepsi max craving has vanished as well as my food cravings which is brilliant as I thought that would be a separate demon to conquer!

They are possibly correct as I've seemingly lost 4lb since Thursday!

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/05/2024 10:54

@Eminybob go out and have a nice evening, could you have a starter or two as your main course instead, I did that a few weeks ago when out with friends, I had soup.

I feel the same about food and how much I relied on it to make me feel better but it didn't really as being fat made me stay in the house at weekends as too embarrassed to go out and I would eat more and the cycle would continue. I also miss it now, but I have to do this for health and happiness. Thinking about when me and dd went abroad last September, I dieted before we went and didn't lose anything. Whilst there I didn't go in the pool once and was worried about the negative impact this had on dd as she knew I was conscious. Was worried all this time about people judging at the breakfast buffet. I am so glad she is going away with her mate this year so it gets me off the hook!

I feel like I am not living my life I am just existing,

I am sure my over eating stems back to the domestic violence I suffered when I was 21, food was my comfort when I was beaten up and while he was out with other women. I think I need to try and address this as I am worried about long term healthy weight as I get closer to 50!

Sorry for the long miserable post on a Sunday morning,

Sun is shining here and I will be doing some crochet and watch football while dd is at work.

Wow that amazing. Have they been accurate all the way along? Maybe you have had a whoosssh! Fabulous! Can't wait to see 14 on my scales, actually I can't wait to see 16 first 😀

WoolyMammoth55 · 05/05/2024 11:11

SO excited for the losses you guys! I'm expecting my losses to be super-slow because I've got an underactive thyroid and I was on steroids for ages, both of which make weight loss hard (and gain annoyingly easy!)

@RMNofTikTok @whatthejuice My starting BMI is 46 and my GP has told me repeatedly that I'm not eligible for referral to the weight clinic here! It's because I'm not diabetic, have no heart condition etc, so am considered "healthy" despite my weight... They only treat people here with co-morbidities. But fingers crossed you are lucky!

But I'm really chuffed that a couple of people have used my Voy code so I'm going to get 2 more 50% off months, at £114... Honestly I think I'll easily save that in food shopping each month, since I have no cravings and didn't even fancy a glass of wine last night!

I do feel sort of empowered and positive that I'm 'doing this myself' and 'taking proactive action' - I am lucky that even with CoL squeezes I can afford this, even once the Voy discounts end I think I'll be looking at under £200/month for the higher doses... With the sneaky 5th dose in the Mounjaro pens that's £40 a week - and probably the best money I'll ever spend for my health if it finally moves the needle on my obesity, which has been getting worse my whole adult life...

Happy Sunday everyone! 😍

Crouton19 · 05/05/2024 17:11

@Dogsbreath7 I filled in an online questionnaire and it said Wegovy was more suitable for me. There doesn't appear to be a huge amount of difference in effect and the cost was slightly lower, but I will see how it goes. I also don't want to feel that I am reliant on any substance to be able to keep weight off - I hope to be able to give myself a helping hand but need to forge a better relationship with food and my body, if that makes sense.

KeepingUndercover · 05/05/2024 18:33

I went for quite a long walk today and I really felt I could "feel" the difference my 10kg loss so far has made. I've always been active and one of the reasons I wanted to lose weight was because I could feel it was starting to impact my ability to be as active as I wanted. So it's particularly encouraging to be noticing the difference already.

@WoolyMammoth55

Ahh yeah I do have a number of comorbidities!
