Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

I am 5”3 and now 40 😵‍💫🫣.
also carrying a considerable amount (4-5 stone)

i decided to take the plunge 2 months ago.
i eat a calorie deficit walk 12-17k steps a day and the results have been frankly uninspiring.

I also weigh myself in kg because it means nothing / is less depressing!

i have lost a not very impressive 4kg so far… ie 0.5kg per week.

however I recently found out some of the medication I am on lowers your metabolic rate by 250/300 cals per day 🤦🏻‍♀️ none of the specialists I saw bothered to mention that…

i am going to switch to 0.5mg and cut back cals further by removing more fat and carbs ie. plain protein and steamed veg for lunch and dinner from next week.

I'm a different person 13 months in and 5 stone down (and pretty much always injected in belly):

@WoolyMammoth55 hair loss, oh yes. I do feel that perimeno + repeated nit treatments when DC were young were worse culprits. My hairdresser hasn't noticed a massive difference. Having said that I have been religious about biotin, omega 3, centrum advance and bovine collagen. I'm also on HRT. (I'm 51)

On tracking: I have tracked everything since I really wanted to give this my all and make the most of the investment. But yes it can flirt with disordered eating, I won't lie. But it's given me a sense of control. As someone said: Being obese is hard, and maintaining a normal weight is hard. Choose your hard.

I've made space for treats in my "calorie allowance" to make sure I don't feel deprived. Not that I have always fancied treats. I have also enjoyed several lovely work trips and holidays with lovely food and drink. It's just that I've been able to stop. "Like normal weight people do", I imagine.

@GreatGateauxsby no way could I have done that many steps in the calorie deficit I've been in. There is simply no fuel for it. And as my brilliant GP said: "Exercise is great for many things but you mainly lose weight in the kitchen."

@Kanoe2 I can't speak for everyone but my side effects have been very manageable. Constipation is the no 1 for me, a few sugar free werthers original toffees work best for me.

I can't stress enough how much upping protein has helped me. It's so sating + you get the thermic effect. It's boring sometimes to just view food as fuel yes, but it's a mindset that's really helped me.

And I can't express the amazing feeling of being able to wear clothes that I like now, rather than picking some nasty dress because it's the only thing that fits. It sounds really shallow but I feel like I have my life back.
Best of luck all! x

P.S. I almost forgot: Drink more water than you ever thought possible. It really, really aids your loss.

GreatGateauxsby · 03/05/2024 19:48

@VanellopeVonSchweetz99 I'm on mat leave so literally have nothing else to do. It's just strolling with pram.
And i was able to do that many steps on cambridge diet which was 600 cals per day....!

I think i will start logging my food and water though because (ignoring the fact i gave birth 3m ago) im really not that impressed with my progress so i need to get to the bottom of it

KatRe · 03/05/2024 20:05

Another one with 5st+ to lose so it's been great to read through everyone's experience.

I injected for the first time just after lunch on Wednesday and it has been a revelation since. Very mild side effects but very noticeable changes, the food noise has completely gone. I can't quite believe it!

I haven't snacked once and am not clock watching until lunch / dinner anymore. It feels so strange but I really hope it works.

1000umbrellas · 03/05/2024 21:05

Hello! This is a great idea for a thread. I am about 6 months along from a starting BMI of 38, need to lose just under 40 kg to be at the very top of the healthy weight range for my height and have lost 19 kg so far. Just realised writing that down it's nearly 3 stone! I liked the pp comment about being less emotionally attached to kgs than to stones, I feel the same! But I find it harder to visualise what a kilo actually represents, if that makes sense. Even being only halfway there is GREAT, so much less discomfort in my hips and knees, less breathless going upstairs and DP says I'm snoring much less too. Still pretty tired but I'm not eating as well as I could be so that's something I want to focus on as I continue. Like other pps I've set small goals along the way which makes it much less overwhelming.

Started getting a lot of questions and comments in the past month, wish it wasn't such a big deal to people but I don't mind it too much and just say I'm using Wegovy, don't see any point in not being upfront. I do find it disconcerting how congratulatory people are, because compared to the 80,000 other diets I've been on it has been fairly effortless so it weirdly feels like I'm cheating. Surprisingly a lot of people haven't heard of the meds; I assumed because I have been doggedly reading up on them and following news on them since they became available in the UK that everyone else was too. But in the same way that those who don't struggle with their weight are deaf to the roar of food noise, I suppose their antennae are not fine-tuned to pick up every nugget of weight loss news on the airwaves either.

Got a lot going on mentally as I'm realising how much of my identity is tied up with food and eating, so trying to process that and not fall into the trap of reverting to old behaviours just out of comfort. Also a little anxious about what happens at the end which is why I'd like to join a thread and get advice from those further down the line. And also happy to pass on any info that might be helpful to those just starting out. 😊

1000umbrellas · 03/05/2024 21:07

Ok that is a massive post. What I meant to say is hi, I'm 1000umbrellas, please may I join your thread?

catgirl1976 · 03/05/2024 22:12

Done my first jab

not 100 percent sure I did it right

didnt feel the needle at all and it wasn’t at zero when I finished so not sure I got a full dose but maybe not the bed of the world for a first one

GreatGateauxsby · 03/05/2024 23:26

@catgirl1976
its probably worth rereading the instruction leaflet enclosed.

From memory the injection button should be depressed until you hear the click then you count to 6 slowly then you remove the pen.

catgirl1976 · 03/05/2024 23:29

I did the counting and I read the leaflet but it didn’t say anything about a click. I’ll try waiting for that next time then counting to six

I’m quite worried I’ve done it wrong now 😞

KeepingUndercover · 03/05/2024 23:32

I don't think I've heard mine click, it just gets pushed all the way down to 0. Which is more of a push than you might realise.

Kanoe2 · 04/05/2024 00:13

BusyBlue · 03/05/2024 17:28

@Kanoe2

I also have a bit of a needle phobia. Decided I just need to go for it, so tonight’s the night for you, @catgirl1976 and I!

Thank you, I don't think I realised but some moral support and doing it with others was exactly what I needed. I finally plucked up the courage and done the first shot tonight.

@WoolyMammoth55 your tips for injecting are amazing. I followed them to the tee and worked like a dream

Good luck everyone

catgirl1976 · 04/05/2024 00:23

Ah amazing! Well done @Kanoe2

I did mine too so we’ve started together

GreatGateauxsby · 04/05/2024 07:14

Might depend what you are using?
I'm on wegovy (which btw is a terrible name)

catgirl1976 · 04/05/2024 08:39

It’s mounjaro but I’ve woken up not feeling hungry so fingers crossed

omega4ever · 04/05/2024 08:55

After less than 2ws on MJ my BMI has dropped from 41.8 to 39.9.
5.2kgs gone 😀 very pleased.

I'm loving the support and encouragement from this thread for those of us on a longer journey. I've a long way to go but am feeling positive and excited. For once I truly believe I can do this.

I do feel I'm eating quite healthily too, just small amounts and no snacks or treats ( I don't want them. Don't even think about them) . I am enjoying the food I'm eating, clean food, good food.

I want to be healthy . Not just a normal weight but healthy mentally, physically and biologically with it.

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/05/2024 09:14

Morning everyone, my start weight was 18 stone something 4 Weeks ago.
I took 2.5 bonus dose this week and have no idea how much I took. Looking forward to going up to 5mg this week as food noise is creeping back and I am not losing like I should be at this weight which is frustrating.

I know I don't have enough protein so need to look how I can increase this.

LimeUser · 04/05/2024 10:06

Started on first 0.25 wegovy last Tuesday and felt loss of appetite and food noise for the first few days but it hasn’t lasted. Hoping that as I get going the weeks get better! I’ve also got over 5st to lose. Husband left me and x3 dc last year and everyone said “oh you’ll have your divorce glow up” - but actually I piled more weight on. So this is the last ditch attempt to try and shift some of this weight that has crept up over the years. Happy to be following this thread!

Eminybob · 04/05/2024 12:11

Quick question, at what point in the 4 weeks do you order the next pen? After the last injection or is that cutting it too fine? I've gone through Asda pharmacy if that makes any difference?

I got an email around three weeks to say time to place an order.

RMNofTikTok · 04/05/2024 13:15

2 days into wegovy with realistically 10 stone to lose, and my appetite has completely gone. I'm trying not to get too excited but I feel like a switched has been turned off.

WoolyMammoth55 · 04/05/2024 15:45

@Kanoe2 yay so pleased you managed it! Power to you 💪

@catgirl1976 if you're on MJ I don't think there's a click - at least I don't remember there being one when I did mine yesterday morning! I'm sure you did it great.

@Sunshineandrainbow I have lost (then sadly regained) on high-protein low-carb before, so happy to share my protein tips! (I'm not counting cals though so these are not necessarily low-cal options - sorry in advance about that...) Eggs are your friend (though avoid if you're constipated), chicken (whole, or portions, or the Heck chicken sausages are meant to be good), and I make little lamb meatballs called koftas in bulk, stick in the fridge then reheat them in the airfryer... If you feel like you absolutely can't be bothered with cooking then this 'clean' whey powder is good, I put it with some cocoa powder and a small apple and maybe a tsp of peanut butter in the nutribullet with just water and blitz it, it's pretty yummy... Also the Fage Total 5% fat yoghurt has really high protein, plus there's the world of cheese... Cottage cheese is highest protein AFAIK but mozzarella is good too🤗 Hope that helps!

@omega4ever love your update!

I'm just over 24 hours in to this journey - expecting it to be a year or maybe 18 months total, given how much I have to lose (I'll be thrilled with 6 stone but 8 would still be the high end of healthy BMI...) Obviously SUCH early days but it does feel like a game changer - no food noise at all! I'm drinking a ton of water! I feel bright and positive and (touch wood) no side-effects yet.

So excited for this journey and hope for good things for all of us ❤

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/05/2024 16:33

Thanks so much @WoolyMammoth55 that's really helpful. I will def get some cottage cheese, I used to like the longley farm one but had forgotten about it.
I dont really like meat which is hard when trying to get protein in. I might try the chicken sausages though as I may be OK with them.
Haven't heard of the clear whey so will look that up.

I weighed this morning and I am over joyed.
Start weight (I think) 18.4
Current weight 17.4

catgirl1976 · 04/05/2024 16:43

Well I’ve met some family for a pub lunch and had half a bowl of tomato soup. Wasn’t even tempted by the bread. Chicken and salad for dinner which I don’t really want but will make myself eat. Like some else said upthread it feels like a switch has been turned off. I’m just hoping it lasts…

good luck everyone

WoolyMammoth55 · 04/05/2024 17:02

@Sunshineandrainbow 1 stone down already! Great job you!

How many weeks in are you? So pleased for you x

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 04/05/2024 18:14

@LimeUser I put 3st on in the few months after my divorce so I didn't glow up either 😄. I then put another 3st on when I met my DP and had 2 pregnancies close together.

I've managed to lose the 2.5st I put on during/after pregnancy since starting Mounjaro but still have all the post divorce weight to come off.

Good luck with your weight loss, I'm sure we can all make great progress over the next few months.
