Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

1000 replies

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/04/2024 08:41

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

Hello!

Just started semaglutide today!

I weighed myself, 19st 3.8lb, won't be doing that again in a hurry!

I need to lose at least 50lb, let's hope we all achieve it!

catgirl1976 · 02/05/2024 15:10

Hello

Could I join? I am 47, 5ft 6 and 15 stone something (I think.........I'm too scared to weight myself)

I've got arthritis in my knee and the consultant has, rightly, said my weight is a factor and if I don't want a knee replacement down the line I need to sort it out. It's given me the kick I need and I've ordered Mounjaro which should be delivered by Tuesday. I know I struggle to lose weight and eat properly so I am hoping this will help.

I am a little bit scared and the cost is a bit eek but then I thought if you look at it weekly its about £35 a week - a takeaway and a bottle of wine really which I won't be having so ..........

I am also a bit excited because although I try not to think about my weight I know really its making me miserable and limits what and do and how much confidence I have. I need to lose at least 5 stone, maybe 6. I would like to be 10 stone so I'll weigh myself the day the pen arrives and I'll know what I'm looking at...

I've got a family event in July so hoping to be a bit slimmer then and then a holiday in September so if I could lose a couple of stone by then I would enjoy it so much more.

2024mustbebetter · 02/05/2024 16:01

Can I join too please? Lots of encouraging comments already. I have 5 stone to lose after going through the menopause, breast cancer treatment and then grief. I’ve just used my 4th 2.5mg and have lost nearly a stone.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 02/05/2024 17:04

@omega4ever Just a note on your DH not commenting - neither has mine. And bless him, he has never once said anything about my weight. Sure he has noticed but I think he's putting it down to new habits. We have two teenage DCs, one slightly overweight and one slightly under-, and we are very mindful not to make body image, food or diets "a thing".

I just haven't told anyone. Just a personal choice, I'm not ready to educate others or explain myself just because I chose to be an early adopter of what I consider to be a miracle drug. It's "funny" though how many conversations now seem to center around my substantial weight loss over the past year. Especially women of a certain age are obsessed! It's honestly plain rude. I'm 50+ myself and I never comment on other people's bodies?!

Eating: If I could give a small tip it's to try to focus on protein + veg. Being in a calorie deficit over time can be pretty physically and mentally draining with the fatigue, even if it's far easier on these jabs due to the appetite suppressing effect. So make sure what you do eat has good nutritional value. (I have eaten similarly to a bariatric patient; around 1000 kcal/day for 80% of the time for a year which is a pretty aggressive cut and certainly not for everyone. I was in a slight rush though, due to some big work events and parties.)
I try to have at least 20g protein per meal, including breakfast. Turkey slices, smoked salmon, prawns and tuna are my new best friends.
It does work!

Eminybob · 02/05/2024 17:18

Can I join in? I could do with losing 5 stone really, but would be happy with 3 at this stage.
I've just taken my second dose of mounjaro. Lost 6lb the first week, despite it being my birthday week and I drank A LOT of wine.

I have definitely found that I have not been hungry, at all really, but have still had the odd urge to snack, however found it easier to exercise restraint.

My issue is wine, and sadly have not found that this helps with those cravings (I did read that it does for some people though)
But the reduction in food intake will hopefully counterbalance.

Babadoobiedoo · 02/05/2024 17:24

@VanellopeVonSchweetz99 similar experience! I am shocked by the number of people that comment, and so many ask how much I have lost, which I find incredibly rude. One acquaintance straight up asked if I had bariatric surgery. I am very happy to have lost the weight, but the comments (almost exclusively from women) make me uncomfortable. I haven’t told anyone about using Wegovy (including dh) and it just feels like a deeply personal decision for which I would inevitably be judged, as is the case with all things weight related.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 03/05/2024 09:29

3.5lbs down this morning. A nice NSV is that my resting heart rate on my Fitbit is gradually dropping as I lose weight and improve my fitness.

Hi all!

FOOD NOISE HAS GONE

I could cry. I've never not had food noise in my entire life. I don't know how I feel about it!

The lightest I have been as an adult is 11st 5lb BMI 29.

I actually don't have a goal weight right now because 19st 3.8lb puts my BMI at 49.6.

To be a health weight I'd have to lose almost 10 stone and that sounds terrifying.

So for now, I would like to lose 1 stone and then see how I feel. I'm sure my goal will change as things progress!

catgirl1976 · 03/05/2024 11:11

So the Mounjaro will arrive today. I've weighed myself and I a 15st 5. I would like to be 10 stone.

I am excited and nervous

Loving reading everyone's successes and tips. I think this thread will really help me! Good luck everyone :)

catgirl1976 · 03/05/2024 11:30

It's arrived. Put it in the fridge and will do the first dose before bed tonight. First goal is to see 14 stone on the scales which is only 6 lb. If I think about losing over 5 stone its too much so I am going to break it down into manageable goals

WoolyMammoth55 · 03/05/2024 12:15

Just had my first dose of MJ! Very excited and hoping for no side effects and just a nice easy halving of my body weight... 😂Miss Optimistic over here!

BusyBlue · 03/05/2024 12:19

Hoping to join you for this journey. Plucked up the courage to weigh myself for the first time in years and hate that I have let myself get to 16st 2 and need to lose at least 5 stones to be healthy.

Mounjaro just arrived! About to go out so will do it when I have more time this evening.

Excited looking at other people’s results- I need this to work.

I have the same approach 😁

Anyone have any tips/ tricks/ supplement recommendations for mitigating the hair loss side effect?

My hair lost loads of volume after a particularly aggressive shake-based French diet I did in my mid-20s (damn you Oligosante!) and has never really got it's groove back...

Would hate for it to get loads worse, so keen to get ahead of it if possible!

I can’t vouch for this yet as I’m at the very beginning of my journey but I am taking care to keep my protein intake up (>100g per day) and I am taking an iron supplement which contains biotin.

OP posts:
WoolyMammoth55 · 03/05/2024 13:28

Thanks @VelociraptorsVelociRapping! Good advice. Will scope out some biotin too (though I'll be avoiding iron as it bungs me up and I don't want to risk adding more gastro chaos into the MJ mix!)

I'm going to aim for high-veg, high-protein, some-fruits, and low-carb I think - historically that's a way of eating that's helped me lose weight. But I'm not necessarily going to choose low-cal/low-fat - anyone else doing the same?

I'm also not super keen to log everything I eat as I usually find that quite triggering - what's everyone else planning?

BusyBlue · 03/05/2024 13:40

@WoolyMammoth55 How was it? Not sure whether to do stomach or thigh.

Anyone with experience know if it even makes a difference where you inject?

If you look at the pinned post at the top of the long-running Mounjaro thread (I think it's currently on no. 7) there is a link to an article which explains the potential effect of different injection sites.

WoolyMammoth55 · 03/05/2024 13:47

@BusyBlue How was it? Not sure whether to do stomach or thigh.

It was fine - slightly complicated getting my head round the instructions but not painful (I had to inject with blood thinners after my c-section so annoyingly used to self-sticking!)

I did my stomach as I've heard it's absorbed quickly there...

I feel fine now - it's been 2 hours and I truly do have zero appetite! Slightly headachey but drinking lots of water and it's not enough to take a paracetamol.

Genuinely got my fingers crossed that this might be a gamechanger!? I've never taken medication before in the 30 years I've been dieting 😫 So am truly hopeful that this is the change that will stick.

Eurghkids · 03/05/2024 13:59

Hi all,
may I join?

I had my second jab Tuesday. It’s felt utterly life changing and touch wood, no nasty side effects. I have not weighed. I’m too scared almost! I want to feel this way forever.

I have 5 stone to loose. 4 at a minimum.
I need to do it relatively quickly for health reasons.

yesterday I went for lunch with a friend and felt immediately overwhelmed by the place of food, even though I’d been hungry prior. Ate a couple of spoonfulls and felt totally done, but no one knows I’m on the jabs and there was no way I could have explained leaving so much food. Against my brain screaming at me that I just didn’t want to eat it, I was full, I struggled on to eat just over half so I didn’t have to explain myself. It was mostly grilled vegetables and some chicken anyways.

i ate a little nibble much later that night because I was concerned about low kcal intake but otherwise could have gone without.

today, the food noise feels like it was come back a bit and I’m mindlessly finding myself in kitchen even though I’m not actually hungry.

I was hoping to stay on 2.5g since no side effects but I guess this must mean I will likely need to move up.

Kanoe2 · 03/05/2024 14:25

Can I join? I have 7 stone to lose.

Mounjaro arrived 2 weeks ago but I'm terrified of needles and keep talking myself out of starting. I'm also terrified of getting terrible side effects. But I need to shift the weight, pull up my big girl pants and do it!

I'm so glad I found this post, doing it with others who have similar weights to lose will be great.

catgirl1976 · 03/05/2024 15:19

@kanoe2 I am doing my first jab tonight before I go to bed.........why not do yours as well then we can be on the same path and maybe you won't feel as alone knowing someone else is doing it and sending you positive thoughts

WoolyMammoth55 · 03/05/2024 15:38

Hi @Kanoe2 , when I was injecting (every day!) after my c-section, the midwife gave me good advice:

  • do all the prep to get the needle ready first
  • then pinch 1-2 cm of your tummy, slightly hard, then let go
  • then pinch roughly the same area, inject into the bulgy 'pinched bit' as per instructions, then remove the needle
  • then let the pinch go
For me when I do it this way I don't really feel anything except the 'slight scratch' the nurses talk about when taking bloods... It's like your mind thinks the pinch and the stick are the same insignificant thing? Wish you all the best of good luck with it!
BusyBlue · 03/05/2024 17:28

@Kanoe2

I also have a bit of a needle phobia. Decided I just need to go for it, so tonight’s the night for you, @catgirl1976 and I!

Dogsbreath7 · 03/05/2024 18:12

It really doesn’t hurt- blood pin prick samples on thumbs are really much worse. Watch YouTube video, do remember to prime before you take it up to dose. I went with belly so no pain in legs or arms if you do get to muscle. Absolutely no chance to catch muscle in my belly! Last one I did I think it was too close to belly button and forgot to prime so there was a little bit of discomfort but nothing like vaccinations and it soon passed.
