Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

1000 replies

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/04/2024 08:41

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

@KeepingUndercover that's fantastic! What a great motivator!

I want to be able to paddleboard, that's my physical goal.

KeepingUndercover · 06/05/2024 10:24

Paddle boarding looks like fun @Crouton19!

Weigh day for me today and another 0.8kg off for week 9. Takes me to a BMI of exactly 40, down from 44. Really hoping that next week I'll be in the 30s.

catgirl1976 · 06/05/2024 10:56

Possibly a daft question but…

When my BMI drops below 30 I’ll still have weight to lose and a fair way to go to target weight. But will the suppliers refuse to prescribe the Mounjaro at that point?! I’m only on my first one but I don’t want to make great progress and then have the supply removed because I’m not clinically obese (but still over weight)

Does anyone know what happens at this point? I’d consider trying to stock up from different places but the expiry date on my own was very short and I’m not sure if it would flag up. What happens at 29.9 BMI and how have people dealt with it?

loving all the positive stories on this thread - making me very hopeful that I can actually do this . Lost another pound this morning so half a stone since Friday 😱

KeepingUndercover · 06/05/2024 11:01

@catgirl1976 a few people on the original Mounjaro thread have emailed suppliers to ask about when they'll stop prescribing. The pattern seems to be that they will continue to prescribe until a BMI of 23 if you started with them. Swapping suppliers might be more difficult once you get under a BMI of 30 though. I'm planning to just stick with the same one to avoid having to send a whole load of proof.

Morning all.
I've been reading these threads for months waiting for the guts to give it a go I suppose! I've got at least 5-6 stone to lose. I feel pretty dreadful with all the extra weight. Far too much wine etc.

My main question is if anyone knows anyone with type 1 diabetes on it? I'm guessing the online providers aren't going to prescribe. Do the NHS prescribe at all? I've read some medical papers on this and it all looks positive so I'm hoping so! I'm not looking for it for free, but worried about getting a prescription.

My other questions is the side effects. I'm worried sick about the prospect of an upset stomach. I'm a teacher so that would be a real problem. I already suffer a little as it is, so really quite concerned about this.

Frankly though, I'm sick of feeling so yuck. I'm so tired all the time. I need to get out of this rut before I regret wasting time. I'm mid-40s, divorced and single. In my head, I need to sort my weight out to be able to move on with my life. As sad as that sounds!

catgirl1976 · 06/05/2024 11:57

@KeepingUndercover thank you that’s really useful

off to google what weight that would be for me

KeepingUndercover · 06/05/2024 11:57

@catgirl1976 Asda have apparently said 25 though, so it's probably worth double checking with whoever your preferred prescriber is!

@user1471530109 I don't know about Type 1 diabetes, I know access on the NHS for weight loss is difficult and requires referrals to weight loss management services. Long waiting lists, no guarantee of a prescription for meds. Usual nightmare. Might be worth talking to your GP or your diabetes team about it.

These injections are contraindicated if you take insulin Im afraid.

Menora · 06/05/2024 12:09

You can get these medications prescribed on the NHS if you are diabetic by your health care team. Do you see a diabetic specialist?

They are not contraindicated, ozempic (wegovy) is licensed specially for diabetics but a private pharmacy might not prescribe for you as you take insulin and need very careful monitoring because you will be at increased risk of hypos. However ozempic itself is still in a shortage so this might be challenging. Trulicity is easier to source I think. Overall don’t try buy it online, talk to your healthcare team.

Sunfl0wer20 · 06/05/2024 12:10

For those of you that still have a slight appetite, what kind of things are you eating? I’m becoming pretty bored of chicken and veg.

user1471530109 · 06/05/2024 12:11

Thanks @RMNofTikTok . From what I can tell, MJ lowers blood sugar. So I can see the caution. But I'm on a diabetes regime that monitors my blood glucose continuously (like an artificial pancreas). I'd like to think a sensible doctor would agree.

I'm off to do more research...

user1471530109 · 06/05/2024 12:13

Thanks @Menora. I do see a diabetes team. But because my control is so tight, I rarely get seen 🙄. Once every 12 months officially. But closer to once every 2 years.

You may be able to get one of your longer acting insulins switched over on the nhs?

Yes sorry, this is what I meant! It would need to replace another insulin rather than be used on top, I didn't explain myself very well!

user1471530109 · 06/05/2024 12:17

Really??

I'm on a pump so only on one type of insulin. 2 types nowadays is very rare.

I'll have to see if I can push for an appointment. Thanks Both.

Menora · 06/05/2024 12:19

I would ask for a review and ask about the options. Good luck!

For those of you that still have a slight appetite, what kind of things are you eating? I’m becoming pretty bored of chicken and veg.

I'm pretty much eating what I did before, as my main meals were usually pretty healthy. One of my kids doesn't eat meat so I do a lot of beans and pulses. Bean chilli, lentil Bolognese, black bean quesadillas, red lentil dal. We eat a lot of fish, last night I did teriyaki salmon, asparagus and rice.

I haven't cut carbs out, I just give myself smaller portions. I know some people have reacted to spice but I've not had an issue with that at all. For lunch I usually make some sort of salad with protein. M&S do these packs of quinoa and lentils in their fresh section and I usually add a couple of tablespoons to my salad. Or I add some seed mix, think it's sunflower and pumpkin I have. Good nutrition and adds a bit of bite.

CherryPickle · 06/05/2024 13:01

May I join? I want to start on Mounjaro. I’m about 115kg. I am debating between Medexpress and Asda, the latter mostly due to familiarity. Anyone have any thoughts about which is best? How quickly do they deliver? I’m due to go away early next weekend but I would like to jab before I go! :)

KeepingUndercover · 06/05/2024 14:09

@CherryPickle I've found MedExpress fine, I think they can be slow if you're trying to switch having started with someone else. But I've been with them from the start and had no problems. They generally dispatch either the same day I order (if done in the morning) or the next working day and then it arrives the next day.

I think most of the companies don't approve over weekends so factor that in to your timings. And your first order might take a bit longer to approve.

Thanks so much! I noticed that they can make oral contraceptives less effective so I think I will wait until after my holiday. 😂

Lanawashington · 06/05/2024 14:14

Does everyone inject exactly one week after the previous one? My next one is due tomorrow, but the effects haven’t worn off at all so far. I’m still not hungry at all and am feeling great so wondering whether to leave it a few more days to make the pen last longer? Or is it best to stick to every 7 days?

Also weighed myself this morning for the first time and am 8lb down in 6 days which is way more than I was expecting!

Crouton19 · 06/05/2024 15:46

@Lanawashington That's an amazing loss! 👏🏽

I think the idea of the doses is you build them up gradually, ie it's not a case of waiting for the effects to wear off but instead keeping the stuff in your system so your body gets used to it and you can tolerate higher doses.

I've had my order confirmed and am going to start on Saturday so just healthy eating until then.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 06/05/2024 16:09

I am sure my over eating stems back to the domestic violence I suffered when I was 21, food was my comfort when I was beaten up and while he was out with other women. I think I need to try and address this as I am worried about long term healthy weight as I get closer to 50!

Sorry for the long miserable post on a Sunday morning

I'm so sorry you went through that, @Sunshineandrainbow. I'm sure many of us have trauma as a factor in our eating and weight gain. Please don't feel you should apologise though. 💜

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 06/05/2024 16:14

I've got five stone to lose before I'm nicely into the healthy weight BMI range. I've also got my first Mounjaro pen sitting in the fridge, but I'm too scared to start. A mix of worrying my chronic constipation (IBS-C) will lead to me totally blocking up, and also that this all seems too good to be true!

Since starting the ordering process I've been eating even more (junk) in a fucked up last hurrah, so I really need to get a move on or I'll be in an even worse place.

Lanawashington · 06/05/2024 16:38

@Crouton19 ahh that makes sense thank you, will carry on and do mine tomorrow as normal

@TryingAgainAgainAgain I was worried about the constipation as it was awful when I tried Saxenda. I had to stop after a week as it was so bad! But honestly this has been fine, in fact I’d say I’m even more regular than before which I’m surprised by as I’ve heard a lot of people have suffered with constipation so you may be okay
