So in a few weeks time (1st September), it’s the start of meteorological Autumn. TheWeatherOutlook has some early thoughts about it here and Netweather’s thoughts are here.

Chilly is ok, endless wet days/storms ~ not wanted.

Autumn 2024 weather

Is a chilly autumn more likely than in recent years?

@GloriaSmud South Leics here and I got very excited about an hour ago as the sky changed and there was this odd bright thing shining in it!! The sky was a bit blue too but now back to grey and dreary Sad

GloriaSmud · 10/11/2024 17:33

I know @blobby10, I saw the bright thing too and as usually seems to happen, it was just as it disappeared below the horizon for the day! I was at the allotment with DH and said to him that it's the first sunset we'd seen for a week or two.
Hopefully some proper blue skies and sun for many this week.

Latest fromTheWeatherOutlook on the possibility of colder weather on the way.

Anticyclonic gloom begins to break

Some computer models showing a plunge of cold Arctic air bringing wintry conditions to the UK by the end of the week

We had brief actual sunshine for a little bit late morning/ lunchtime, it was soon swallowed up again by mist and cloud but I’m hopeful for tomorrow.

We ate home made scones and watched the rugby

Sounds amazing & now on my list for next weekend 😁

Delatron · 11/11/2024 15:36

Finally a bit of sun today. And looks colder next week?
Pleased with a change from dull and grey every single day…

Delatron · 11/11/2024 15:38

Ooh I missed the updates about possible snow. Time to get my hopes up. And then for them to be continually dashed for the next 4 months!

IDareSay · 11/11/2024 18:13

UK weather: England just had two hours of sunshine in ten days

I can see stars in the sky now, unless there's a massive change before the sun rises in about an hour, there might actually be some sun here in Argyll&Bute today, fingers crossed.

We had glorious sunshine here yesterday and this morning. It’s just gone a bit grey but all that golden light has been wonderful. Hoping we get a bit more this week. The solar panels could do with it too.

IDareSay · 12/11/2024 14:47

Glorious so far here today so went for a long walk on the hills and it's the first time I have had a cold nose this autumn! I am now in the comfy chair alternating ice and heat on my left hip and lower back as I went down hard by slipping in a very muddy lane that runs through a farmer's cowsheds. (Think mud that needs full length wellies).
Managed to gingerly walk home.

I think I have got off very lightly with what will probably be just a big bruise and having the wind knocked out of me. Coat covered in cowpat/mud.
DH and I were discussing the air ambulance at the time, and how many walkers have had to be rescued after being injured on the hills and clifftops...😳

Sunshine this morning, but cold 🥶 3c at 9am

blobby10 · 12/11/2024 16:00

yesterday evening I walked the dog around 5pm and found myself jumping at the shadow caused by the moon being behind me! No need for a torch but tonight the torch will have to be on right from the start as its SO dull and gloomy again Sad

MotherOfCatBoy · 13/11/2024 11:42

Oh dear @IDareSay ! Hope it’s easing up for you now. I’ve found when walking/ hiking that dairy farms are the absolute worst for churned up mud around gates and lanes. There’s nothing like it. Sheep don’t shit as much and certainly don’t churn the earth as much! Our walking poles have been a godsend many times.

IDareSay · 13/11/2024 12:00

Thanks @MotherOfCatBoy I think the walking poles are a good shout, I'll look into getting some.

Feeling way worse today, very stiff and bruised, but it will pass. Glorious weather here today so feeling sad at not being outside even though 'outside' seems to have it in for me Easter Hmm

BlackeyedSusan · 13/11/2024 12:56

Talking of the bright thing disappearing...

It's been cloudy for so long, and now the sun is back it has got low enough to disappear behind a tower block in the middle of the day. Sad Hate this time of year.

justasking111 · 13/11/2024 14:18

Sun is hiding again. I've lit the fire.

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/11/2024 14:44

Still sunny here but cold. Guess it is November though.

Pixiedust1234 · 13/11/2024 15:50

I've had that yellowish thing partially for two days running. Unfortunately it is only showing at the angle where you can't see out of your windscreen 😬

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/11/2024 17:07

Today was sunny and 8C, lovely to be working outside. Not only that, on the way home we saw an actual sunset!

justasking111 · 13/11/2024 18:14

Noticed today that the trees were still in leaf. Changing colour but not falling. They've enjoyed the weather until now.

GloriaSmud · 16/11/2024 07:50

A touch of winter arrives next week....and as usual, some newspapers have gone overboard.....

Looks at the moment like any accumulations will be in the north/Scotland (especially over hills) at first but later on, there could be a chance of wintry showers anywhere, especially around western and eastern coasts.

Update on the cold weather next week and some words on the hyperbole headlines

Met Office yellow warnings have been issued for snow and ice for parts of northern Britain from Sunday evening through to Tuesday morning, as cold arctic air arrives. There are plenty of hyperbole headlines from some media too about how much it will sn...

We're forecast some on very high ground so the mountains may look pretty.
