And it looks like the unsettled theme continues ~ long range forecast from the metoffice.....

Monday, 8th - Wednesday, 17th July
The unsettled and changeable theme is expected to continue through the majority of this period. Cloud and rain-bearing systems will cross the UK from the west or southwest at times, accompanied by periods of stronger winds, but there are likely to be drier interludes too, with the best of the more settled weather in the east. With a generally southerly wind direction, temperatures are expected to rise back to the July norm from the cool beginning to the week, with the potential for wafts of warm continental air to affect the southeast at times. Into the second week, there are tentative signs that conditions could gradually become a bit more settled, though temperatures are likely to remain around average overall.

Thursday, 18th July - Thursday, 1st August
There is a chance that the period could start off on a settled note, but overall fairly changeable and at times cool weather is slightly favoured during the second half of July. This doesn't rule out brief warm or even hot spells. Wetter than average conditions are slightly more likely than drier than average conditions, with western and southern UK more likely than elsewhere to see above average rainfall.

The Met Office long range is always just hedging, it always says unsettled so I don't take any notice of it. The best they can do is predict a day or two ahead and they struggle with that.

Ugh. But at least it will warm up a bit? With nights still pleasantly cool for sleeping ? And my sandals will hopefully last another year? (Looking for crumbs of comfort here)
Then there’s still August and maybe an Indian summer in September.

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2024 08:14

I appreciate why they have to provide a broad scope - they are trying to cover 4 weeks of weather across an island. All they can do is highlight possible trends. Same in winter when they are covering the north of Scotland and my bit of the SE.

Thanks Gloria.

Problem is August is quite often like Autumn. We normally get the half decent weather in June and July these days so if July is crap that’s a bit depressing.

You can guarantee a one week heatwave in September and that’s about it! Kids back a school, Uk holidays over. It’s a bit late by then.

KeepScrapingBy · 04/07/2024 13:25

I hear you Delatron. The best of the summer is over by August. It’s normally humid and muggy with thunderstorms and darker evenings. Wasps and crowds everywhere. But we can hope … and as an earlier poster said, maybe the forecast is wrong anyway …

justasking111 · 04/07/2024 13:36

We're the west so July August often grey and wet.

My tumble dryer blew up after I'd washed sofa throws so I hung them out over the decking. I stood there thinking it's too bloody cold and windy to even sit outside fully dressed to read a book.

I always feel this. For me summer is May to July. By August mornings start getting darker, evenings drawing in. I don't like heatwaves in September, it just doesn't feel right, By September shorts have been put away and I'm getting my autumn clothes out.

So no change really.
Maybe august will be really hot all month?

Statistically not in Wales it's always wet. Nor Westerly winds 😢

socks1107 · 04/07/2024 17:32

What's really shocked me today is the chill. It feel like September, chilly and a bit sunny. Totally odd feeling

Yes! With the light evenings- that’s when you want warmth. I’m kind of over it by September- I know autumn /winter is coming I have no hope.

Right now, I hope the forecast is wrong. Because two bad summers in a row I can’t cope with! I will buy a place abroad. It’s too depressing .

It just never is. August tends to be crap.

socks1107 · 05/07/2024 08:14

Delatron I was thinking last night just how dark it seemed, obviously the cloud cover but it felt dark. My daughter said the house looked cosy - I want windows open and tea in the garden! Not cosy.

Agreed august does tend to be rubbish.

This morning in London it is cold and wet. I am no longer in linen trousers but heading to work in my tailored trousers that I assumed would be hidden at the bottom of the ironing pile by now!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/07/2024 08:17

Uurgh. I woke up yesterday to the sound of rain, then it rained all day, solidly and heavily. Last night I was woken up several times by very heavy rain, and I have woken up this morning to the sound of solid soaking rain.

Everything is saturated again, gutters are overflowing again, the lake that forms on my street after too much rain has formed again...

And the forecast is for more of the same for the foreseeable future FFS.

socks1107 · 06/07/2024 08:18

And only 16 degrees forecast!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/07/2024 08:34

To be honest I don't care about the temperature - if anything I enjoy being out and active more if it isn't very hot. But the rain and the gloom are hard to take, especially after a dark rainy spring, and especially with a very active 9 your old bouncing off the walls.

MotherOfCatBoy · 06/07/2024 10:52

Drizzly yesterday, very heavy rain and rolling thunder overnight, pouring down at 6am. Now brightening. Hoping for a nice afternoon.

Pixiedust1234 · 06/07/2024 11:01

*quietly sneaks onto the thread

Been cold and surprisingly blustery here since the release, seen her blown across the lawn a few times 😮 Exactly one week later the wind has died, it's got warmer and ..... drum roll....it's raining. Hrrrrump 😠

Delatron · 06/07/2024 12:18

I’m thoroughly annoyed with how wrong they got the forecast today. In London was supposed to be high teens and sunny/cloudy. Not sure when it changed but now rainy/windy and about 15 but feels much colder.

justasking111 · 06/07/2024 12:40

Raining when I went to bed, raining this morning, dogs did not want to go out finally got a walk at 10am. Now the sun is peeking through but the wind is back 🤬🤬

Just1234 · 07/07/2024 13:20

Anyone know where I can request my summer 2024 refund ..

Delatron · 07/07/2024 13:22

Someone has just said ‘it’s a lovely summer’ on another thread. It’s rained here for 3 days non stop and been about 15 degrees. In no way shape or form is this ‘a lovely summer!’

Noosnom · 07/07/2024 13:43

I'm sure the Olympic summer was atrocious until the games started. Then downhill after they finished and we had an Indian Summer in Sept.

Got caught in the rain just now and had to put my brolly down when it started thundering. Heating is broken. Woe is me.

Same, more rain
I go outdoor swimming and my only conditions are that it's dry, and fairly warm as I'm a wuss. Been twice this year Sad
Worn my new sandals once

Weather app says it won't be over 19c this week and the days that it is 19c it's forecast to rain!
