While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

We’ve had sleet today in West Yorkshire. The rain had sleet in it and was so cold.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 27/11/2023 11:38

Awwwww i want snow ❄
I live at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds and we rarely get any as it hit's the Wolds and stays there 🙁

Maireas · 27/11/2023 11:47

I don't want snow! Getting to and from work is awkward and dangerous - nice to look at, very inconvenient! Christmas Day only please...

justasking111 · 26/11/2023 15:14

Can anyone else smell snow coming. I knew a family member years ago who did

I can't smell it but I'm the person who says (and gets the funny looks) it's too cold for snow, or that the light is eery so possibly snow is on the way.

EDIT - Another vote for photo of snow puppy Grin

Beckafett · 27/11/2023 12:05

Snow on the tops of Holmfirth West Yorkshire now!

Pinkpinkpink15 · 26/11/2023 16:31

@justasking111 I love that your prep for snow is getting the christmas decorations out 😂😂

we will be needing photos of puppy in the snow!!

I stopped for a second to consider what I was missing by way of prep!

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 27/11/2023 12:13

Its cold and the sky is white in my part of kent but dont think we are predicted any snow

Pinkpinkpink15 · 27/11/2023 12:17

NameChangeDayNov · 26/11/2023 20:23

This sounds like my kinda prep. When I was in the 'nesting' stage with DD (the part where many extremely pregnant women find themselves bleaching skirting boards), I spent my time choosing new rugs from Heals.

In all seriousness, I have put in an extra food order for Tuesday with a bunch of warming/easy/wintry meals. Just... In...Case.

@NameChangeDayNov

i like your style!!

Pinkpinkpink15 · 27/11/2023 12:23

Slightly off thread topic, but met office saying 9° here, but it feels a LOT colder than that. I must get a new digital weather thingy. Not that it would make it any warmer 🤪but I'd know if I was right or not! I'd say it's about 3°

justasking111 · 27/11/2023 12:32

Our digital weather station has flat batteries. Keep meaning to replace them 🙈

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/11/2023 12:38

Pink you can probably find local home weather stations close to your location via this map.

cornishrosie · 27/11/2023 13:43

it won't snow down in the SW 😔

Same in N Wales Western. Think Ireland throws a shadow

ListenLinda · 27/11/2023 14:17

I’m watching that Beast from the East documentary.
The stranded motorists complaining they arent being rescued quick enough - this is why you were told to stay at home 😑
Not sure if we will ever see a BFTE again but I for one would not be leaving the house 😂

SquirmOfEels · 27/11/2023 14:22

As they pointed out as the end of that documentary (I had in on in the background this morning) a lot of us are now much better at WFH on days when there is dislocation of services (weather, strikes etc) which could mean fewer people going out into treacherous conditions and therefore fewer lives lost.

They were right to point out how few people know how to winterise their cars, or how to drive in snow or on ice.

And good that the documentary covered the flooding that followed

justasking111 · 27/11/2023 14:34

Winterising the car anti freeze in the car is such a simple thing to do every winter

Snow on the tops of Holmfirth West Yorkshire now!

Just coming on to say it was snowing quite a lot on the way over the woodhead pass from Manchester towards Sheffield this morning, then I saw your comment. Same neck of the woods.

On Thursday, 30th November it is 13 years since the day South London, Surrey and Sussex were hit with inches and inches of thick heavy snow that fell from 10am for 12 hours + and gridlocked the region. Now, if it's likely to snow, I stay home. Not getting caught like that again.

I remember this very well. My (now husband) had recently moved in with me and he was due to fly from Gatwick to somewhere in the far east. I remember us valiantly setting off in the thickest snow I have ever seen and basically getting to about 1.5 miles down the road before really realising it was pointless and then heading back home. He flew out a few days later.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/11/2023 14:51

During BFTE I was one of a group of three working in woodland and we went to work as sort of challenge to ourselves, though once the snow really got going and blocked the roads we stayed at home. I remember us saying 'Okay, -12C forecast for tomorrow, are we up for it?' and then putting on layers and layers of our warmest winter things and looking like the Michelin Man. As I recall, as long as you kept moving it wasn't too awful but it was certainly daunting. The hot lunches helped, mind.

GladioliandSweetPeas · 27/11/2023 16:12

Any sign of anything in the lower part of the north east please @OhYouBadBadKitten

justasking111 · 27/11/2023 17:27

Oh forecast says fizzled out in Wales and for son outside Leeds. Family in Morpeth looking more promising. Snow is so fickle 😭

Oh man. We are having a big party in a marquee for our DD's 18th on Saturday. For once in my life I actualy don't want snow 🫣

Was in the same position as you 5 years ago 🤣 They came and put it up whilst it was snowing - they were amazing. I had to bang the roof in the middle of the "roof" to get the snow off it. If I remember correctly I also had to keep one of the heaters on. Good luck !

Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten I came here last week to see if you'd posted - I don't tend to believe anything weather related until I see you or @GloriaSmud have put a post up 🤣

GloriaSmud · 28/11/2023 07:34

MargaritaHargitaysLittleSister ~ Xmas Grin

So it looks like at the moment (if I'm reading the GFS right), the most we can hope for at the end of this week is possibly wintry showers, mostly along the east coast but some might make their way further inland. The NE and Scotland though (especially hills) could get something more disruptive.
Although some/most of us won't see any ❄this week, it does look like it remains cold until the end of next week.

Netweather's thoughts here.

Cold Arctic air sets in this week but where will see the Snow?

Cold air will be around into the start of December and there will be snow showers off the North Sea for Scotland and the hills of northern/eastern England. Elsewhere, uncertainty.

Winterising the car anti freeze in the car is such a simple thing to do every winter

If it were really only that, then we wouldn't have anything like the problems we do!

Winter wiper blades, winter tyres, snow chains (and learning how to use them), knowing to add load so a heavier car has more traction, making some of that load ash/grit plus shovel. Foil blankets (useful year round, but especially winter) and supplies if stranded (thermos of how water every longer journey), suitable clothes esp footwear if you decide to get out and walk.

Even if you don't change your tyres, at least check your tyre pressure relative to the expected temperature
