While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

Well apparently it’s snowing here now. It isn’t though (east mids)

GloriaSmud · 08/02/2024 06:38

I think (from looking at the top of the cars) there's something sleety falling here (Leicester) but it's 2.8C so think I'm in for more a wet day than a white one!

Whu · 08/02/2024 06:45

I’m close to the amber N Wales warning (but in yellow) it’s just wet and windy no snow as yet.

Same here. Apparently we should have snow, but all I can see is rain. Grin

TokyoSushi · 08/02/2024 07:24

No snow in Warrington 🙄

xxlostxx · 08/02/2024 07:26

So disappointing to wake up to rain and no snow in sight!

InMySpareTime · 08/02/2024 07:32

The Manchester Snow Shield is fully operational. Definitely rain here.

hoochycrone · 08/02/2024 07:33

Huh! Not a flake here in W Yorkshire 😔

gingercat02 · 08/02/2024 07:53

Light frost on the NE coast. FROST!!

Lemonyyellow · 08/02/2024 08:29

I’m in the amber north wales warning. All our schools were closed yesterday as a precaution. And…

it is raining.

kids are gutted! Although they have an unexpected day off which is nice but ridiculous

ListenLinda · 08/02/2024 08:39

Its sleeting here in Bradford, West Yorks.

Evenstar · 08/02/2024 08:40

Sleet tending towards snow south of Preston, ground is very wet now so can’t see anything settling

redboots765 · 08/02/2024 08:41

Snow in West Yorkshire, and it's sticking ❤️ schools are open...for now.

ListenLinda · 08/02/2024 08:43

@redboots765 where in W Yorks are you?

ifonly4 · 08/02/2024 08:49

In Gloucestershire here. It's been raining for 6-7 hours constant and hasn't stopped yet, windy and grey. Hope we're not sending anything too bad to those of you up north.

Bowednotbroken · 08/02/2024 08:50

Started snowing here in West Yorkshire (not far from the South Yorks border) at 7.24. Sticking to grass, roofs, cars but not the road. So far...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/02/2024 08:50

This is a rain ----> snow event as warm air and cold air collide, so if you in an amber area, bear in mind that amber warnings for the Midlands/Yorks etc don't start until midday.

In terms of the yellow areas, the higher you are, the greater your chances of snow.

Current snow radar attached.

Is met office any good? It’s saying rain and snow now? Or is it just a bit of guess when it comes to snow?

also if it’s 1 degree Celsius, would rain then become snow? Or can it still rain?

as you can see I’m clueless with weather! I am really hoping for snow though! Kids are super excited for their snow day so it def needs snow 😂

The met office is excellent, but the meteograms (the little pictures on the app) don't portray likelihood very well, other than a % precip chance.

You can get snow when temps are above freezing. Indeed, some of the most beautiful, large snowflakes can fall then.

I found a nice blog that explains a little as to how snow can fall when temperatures are greater than 0C. There is a lot about the science of snow in there that might interest older kids with an unexpected rain/snow day.
https://nsidc.org/learn/parts-cryosphere/snow/science-snow#:~:text=In%20this%20case%2C%20snowflakes%20will,C%20(41%C2%B0F).

Ooh thank you

colouringindoors · 08/02/2024 09:18

Where's that map from @OhYouBadBadKitten ?

Any suggestions for local.forecast in Amber warning so I can plan my route?

thanks

user746016 · 08/02/2024 09:31

We now have heavy snow just north of Nottingham

Its the Met Desk snow radar app. I'm afraid in the amber area, its a 'nowcast' situation. Especially given that it is so height dependent.
