While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

@Xiaoxiong i know I’m derailing the thread but I’ve spent a bit of time in Beverley and struggling to see what would make it worth a school trip from London?

Delatron · 07/02/2024 12:27

Such a North/South split. Our forecast says 10 degrees for Thursday. Doesn’t even feel that cold today. Didn’t need my gloves for my run.

It will be interesting to see where that line is between mild and cold air for the snow.

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2024-02-08

Snow and ice warnings - including those amber warnings. Snow upwards of 10cm - and much higher up on the hills is expected widely across those warning areas. In amber areas do not travel unless essential - you are likely to get stuck! In yellow areas, use common sense and remember how rubbish we are at snow in this country!

10cm is only 2 1/2 inches. We really are rubbish here. But to be fair I haven't seen even that much since 2009/2010 I'll try to find a picture from then. And we were in the hills. Icy roads are the problem, our council can't afford to clear them or fill grit bins. They won't be you collect it either.

justasking111 · 07/02/2024 12:50

Found 2009 and 2010. I grew up in the south east when we had far more snow and the Thames froze. Welsh snow by comparison is pants.

Son has been in West Yorkshire for five years now. He's underwhelmed too.

It's 4 inches

2/3 of a 6 inch/15 cm ruler

Okay apologies it's 3..93 inches which is still very little.

As I said it's not the snow but the icy roads which are an issue. I know I have to get up four roads to reach one which has been gritted. Wales is very hilly.

From home Up to the top of our hill, turn left, up another hill, turn right, along another road, turn left, along there turn left again to finally reach a gritted road. Absolutely fine in husbands 4x4, my mini 😂😂😂

LastChristmasIgaveyoumyTart · 07/02/2024 13:52

I have winter tyres on my small car and it copes better than my dhs 4x4.

Xiaoxiong · 07/02/2024 14:41

@LastChristmasIgaveyoumyTart it's a fair question! We are singing in the Minster Smile

LastChristmasIgaveyoumyTart · 07/02/2024 14:44

Ah well the minster is worth a visit, it’s worth climbing the tower if you are able.

Schools have been closed in some counties in NE wales in anticipation of the amber warning for snow tomorrow so I hope it does snow or I’ll have some very disappointed children!

It's sunny in Llandudno now not a cloud in the sky @Lemonyyellow . I hope they're right

LastChristmasIgaveyoumyTart · 07/02/2024 16:51

It definitely feels colder today and car says 5, starting to get excited for our first proper snow of the winter.

redboots765 · 07/02/2024 17:13

@justasking111 I'm in west yorkshire, on the moors and it's not the snow that's concerning, it's the snow plus wind.

The wind drives the snow onto the lanes and then we are marooned. A few years ago the snow buried cars and we waited weeks for the snow machine to dig out the lanes. (rural villages not a priority, and if you have a long farm drive, nightmare)
I WFH and have plenty of food, so I welcome the snow.

Darkflame · 07/02/2024 20:22

I'm really hoping we get Snow ( South Manchester/Trafford) but the Metoffice has downgraded from sleet/snow to stupid rain. Hope the prediction is wrong as it would be lovely to see the white stuff again!🌨❄️

LastChristmasIgaveyoumyTart · 07/02/2024 20:40

@Darkflame I am in a similar area and watched the local news keenly, I’m none the wiser. It could be rain it could be snow or more likely a slushy mix of the two. Weirdly it looks more likely to snow at about 2pm just in time for the school run/slide.

justasking111 · 07/02/2024 20:45

It's cold tonight, can't see any stars, so we shall see

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/02/2024 20:50

It looks like we've only got heavy rain to look forward to (Hertfordshire). However, I recall a similar set up quite a few years ago now where the heavy rain suddenly turned to very heavy snow that had us stuck for a long time. I remain hopeful!

Fingers crossed its snow! So fed up of the practically endless rain we've been having.

GloriaSmud · 07/02/2024 21:37

The metoffice are saying our current temperature here (Leicester) should be 4C at the moment. My weather station is saying it's 1.3C so it'll be interesting what falls from the sky early tomorrow morning!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2024 22:08

The met office produced a couple of nice graphics showing forecast amounts of snow.

My county has closed all the schools for tomorrow and now my app (which had all snow symbols before) has a mixture of snow and rain symbols. Kids are fully expecting extreme snow and have got their sledges out ready 🙈

SerpentEndBench · 07/02/2024 22:22

Thank you for the updates.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2024 22:25

Apps are not useful really for snow forecasts.

Apps are not useful really for snow forecasts.

Is met office any good? It’s saying rain and snow now? Or is it just a bit of guess when it comes to snow?

also if it’s 1 degree Celsius, would rain then become snow? Or can it still rain?

as you can see I’m clueless with weather! I am really hoping for snow though! Kids are super excited for their snow day so it def needs snow 😂
