As we're a few weeks away from the start of meteorological autumn (1st September), some early thoughts here.

Jesus as if they haven't enough to contend with 🙈

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/10/2023 21:11

I wouldn't worry about the 4th yet, we've lots of water to pass under the bridge yet. (literally!) I'm keeping an eye on next Sunday at the moment, when GFS shows a low pressure system passing over SE.
Generally though, plenty of wet and windy weather to come.

justasking111 · 22/10/2023 21:27

@OhYouBadBadKitten the run off has started here. Our streams, waterfalls are torrents. Water running across roads. Frost and ice the scots really don't need just now.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 23/10/2023 08:03

Woke up this morning to zero degrees. Had to do that thing where you squint out of the window in the dark to try and see if there's frost / ice. I decided it just looked like condensation on the car but went out early anyway. Good job I did - pure ice on the windscreen.

We had a fair bit of rain here, but not as much as some. One of our farmland fields is like a lake which I've never seen quite as bad before in 42 years of living here.

Be safe everyone.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/10/2023 09:50

The ice this morning must have been a bit of a nightmare!

I'm not sure what to say about the weather for this week. Unsettled is the theme. Where you have drier interludes, make the most of them.

GloriaSmud · 23/10/2023 11:54

It was a chilly 3C this morning (now back in Leicester after my lovely week on the SW coast!) I'm about to take advantage of the nice weather today and start emptying my pots of the summer bedding plants.

(And I noticed from one of my favourite webcams, that the Christmas tree has gone up this morning in Lordi Square, Rovaniemi in Finland.)

That gave me the kick i needed to clear the garage gutterings today. House was done in summer but I refuse to pay extra for the garage ones that I can reach from a mini stepladder. It was very...ummmm...midgey.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/10/2023 16:54

oh yuck Pixie. But well done! You've just reminded me, I need to go and clear out where our down pipe goes into the drain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/10/2023 20:48

Amusingly, GFS has introduced the risk of snow down the spine of the UK on the 3rd. Not just for the Pennines, but into the south. Confused
just one model run though and GFS is fond of overforecasting snow.

And here starteth the 'Will it, Won't it?' Snow dance that shall prevail until at least.. ooh late March shall we say? 😄☃️

SequentialAnalyst · 25/10/2023 03:28

Snow? Don't talk to me about snow! You young 'uns know nothing. Why, when I were a lass, that was snow! And when I was older, and had moved to NE England, that was really snow!!

I am an optimist, and still live in hope each year. Plus now, I can walk to my nearest shops, and don't have to drive to work any more...

nannynick · 25/10/2023 05:28

GFS likes to be rogue. I think we can expect a lot of moisture... be that rain, hail, sleet, snow. Probably rain.

nannynick · 25/10/2023 05:55

Friday 3rd November seems to me to be a day to watch out for, as the low pressure system comes in. Wind may be the issue, as that could bring down trees onto power lines. We are still over a week away, so models will change.

@OhYouBadBadKitten what do you make of the latest GFS run for Friday 3rd, especially for NE Scotland?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/10/2023 20:49

There's definitely something up in the models for 2/3/4th Nannynick. I wouldn't like to guess specifics, but it looks stormy and/or cold. Pretty rough scenarios keep popping up.

justasking111 · 25/10/2023 21:56

We're in for cold weather before that though. 🥶🥶

Thurlarder · 27/10/2023 14:40

Why is it still so bloody mild?! It's doing my head in!

The days here are sunnier but the nights nicely chilly. Think of the heating bills you're saving on

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2023 19:15

Tomorrow mid afternoon into the evening looks perhaps quite lively for some with thunderstorms possible across southern central and eastern areas into the midlands.

Thursday is beginning to look like another named storm day. I think early warnings will go out in the next few days. This most likely affecting the south and south east for wind.

Rocksonabeach · 28/10/2023 21:47

I didn’t know there was a weather thread - hurrah! I have two indoor barometers and a very old fashioned weather vane and weather house and thinking about building my own stevensons box? I think that’s what it is called. I know this is to talk about the weather and is fab - but I’m interested in where it all comes from eg local to me it’s the airport readings which are higher up so often not the same as me in the village 10 miles away.

SequentialAnalyst · 28/10/2023 23:31

@Rocksonabeach sounds like you will fit right in!

justasking111 · 28/10/2023 23:55

Had a look at the reservoir levels just now some are well above the average year. We've flood alerts out tonight for some areas.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/10/2023 07:41

I'll be starting a thread for saturdays fierce looking weather in a day or two. Looks like we will have two named storms in a week. In the mean time, take every opportunity to enjoy the bits that aren't raining!
