As we're a few weeks away from the start of meteorological autumn (1st September), some early thoughts here.

Welcome to the thread Rocks! if you click on the weather heading you'll find that there's a whole topic. Building your own stevensons screen sounds like a great project! Which instruments will you house in there?

BiddyPop · 31/10/2023 09:00

I was hoping the second storm would fizzle out over the Atlantic - I am taking my cub pack for a hike and overnight hostel trip on Saturday, which will actually be my last event with them and the reason I delayed my departure for overseas an extra 3 weeks (it was reasonable to take 7 weeks to pack and move as most people get 4-5 months but this was a very unexpected move).

We can't get into the hostel until late afternoon as another group uses it on Friday. So I'm back into scenario planning for contingencies...

The days here are sunnier but the nights nicely chilly. Think of the heating bills you're saving on

I hardly ever have the heating on because I can't bear the feel of it in the house - it makes me feel like I'm being suffocated. I use blankets and hot water bottles instead. When it gets really cold we'll have it on in the morning and a bit in the evening just to warm up the house, but only ever for about an hour at a time. I could never have it on while I was sleeping and I don't like it on when I wake up either. It's not even that I run particularly hot, I just don't like central heating, it makes my skin crawl.

It feels extremely mild in Bristol. I don't need a jacket when I go out which just feels very wrong for October!

SequentialAnalyst · 01/11/2023 00:43

@Thurlarder I'm the same. I invested in 2 proper woollen blankets like I used to have on the bed BD (Before Duvets). And I like a nice weight on me, so have added a weighted blanket to my selection of bedding, which helps me sleep on hot summer nights without making me too hot.

justasking111 · 07/11/2023 19:01

It's chilly now. My arthritis was shouting at me today. Radiators working hard. Feel sorry for all coping with the mess of flooding.

MotherOfCatBoy · 09/11/2023 10:01

Fierce hail showers here this morning, S Wales. Anyone else?

Blue skies and beautiful here in the NW following torrential rain ending on Tuesday!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/11/2023 12:41

Just filled the grit bin, here (NE coast of England) chilly enough at 3 degrees this morning. Forecast for 1 degree tomorrow, and it's usually colder than they say. We also had frost / ice in October so I'm now winter ready.

Perihelion · 10/11/2023 09:07

Looked like winter this morning in Edinburgh. 0C and everything covered in frost

Pixiedust1234 · 12/11/2023 11:54

I really wish they would use fiercer names. Debi is a nice girl, very quiet and thoughtful and doesnt have an aggressive or rambunctious bone in her body :/

countrygirl99 · 12/11/2023 12:23

@Pixiedust1234 I was talking to one of the Facilities managers at work sorting out a loca affected by the flooding in Northern Ireland. I mentioned that the next storm is Debi (wish they'd spelled it my way). His reaction was"oh God, that'll be trouble" 😆

Pixiedust1234 · 12/11/2023 12:35

😂😂

I guess he found the only rambunctious Debi

megletthesecond · 12/11/2023 15:09

I'm so over the damp, showery weather we're getting in Hampshire.
I can usually keep on top of drying laundry on the line almost all year round, only using the tumble dryer a few times in Jan / Feb. But I think I'll need to use it this week as the backlog is dreadful. Where are the bright autumn days?

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/11/2023 15:29

We were talking about that earlier and were struggling to remember when we last had a dry 24 hours.

bookworm14 · 14/11/2023 12:09

Chucking it down in London yet again. Really hope we get a dry spell soon - this is ridiculous.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 14/11/2023 12:20

SE London borders and raining cats and dogs here.

justasking111 · 14/11/2023 12:20

The sky is leeking again in Wales 😭

BiddyPop · 14/11/2023 13:14

It was sunny in Dublin this morning judging by photo of DDog that DH sent me...Brussels continues to live up to its grey and wet reputation!

SequentialAnalyst · 14/11/2023 15:02

I suspect it's the erstwhile polar ice caps. Raining down on us. Sad

BouleBaker · 14/11/2023 18:19

I can do without this unpredictability. I have a Beaver Scout campfire on Thursday which we already moved back 2 weeks because of Cíaran. The forecast is sunny tomorrow, horribly wet from 10-5 Thursday then sunny from 5 onwards. We start at 5:30. I think the weather has it in for my toasted marshmallows.

SequentialAnalyst · 14/11/2023 21:49

It's the Lumiere Festival here from Thur-Sun. Thankfully, the weather forecast looks hopeful. Fingers crossed!

SequentialAnalyst · 14/11/2023 21:57

Vaguely weather related Lumiere story:
There was an installation at the one before last which created the illusion of a whale in the River Wear. In the Summer, the festival organisers, being organised, came to Durham to suss everything out.

But the Lumiere Festival happens in November. So when they came to install the artworks, the Wear was somewhat fuller than when they had made their plansGrin They needed to get something across the river - a cable or something. But now they couldn't do it in the way they had originally planned.

So they found a fly fisherman from somewhere, who could cast across the riverSmile

The whale illusion was excellent.
(Light projected onto water droplets, I think.)
