Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Spotted that system yesterday, it does look like it has the potential to be nasty, I reckon some amber warnings for wind will be issued

Can I derail slightly by asking what are the criteria for a storm being named, and where do the names come from?

(also what kind of name was Babet?)

That low pressure has been showing the charts for a while, but can wildly change position... sometimes heading straight into Ireland, sometimes into Cornwall, one took it up and over Scotland, one to France.
Yesterday GFS and ICON seemed to be getting closer to agreement on position, coming into Cornwall and then along south coast. All could change though in later model runs.
Early hours of Thursday morning may see landfall... typically it is a day I am up early and needing to travel. So keeping an eye on what may happen.

Storms are named when they are likely to have amber or red warnings associated with them. The names come from a collaboration between the Met Office, Met Èireann and the Dutch national weather service. Hence Babet.

Glad you have this thread up as wondering how serious this storm was likely to be.

Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten . We are on half term here in Wales and were planning to head from home (edge of the Brecon Beacons) to Snowdonia for a few days at the end of the week. May well be postponing by the looks of it. Placemarking so I can keep an eye on this thread.

Oh no, I have to travel to London on Thursday morning. Do I need to change my appointment do you think ? Driving from Wales to London. Could drive on Weds evening and stay somewhere a bit nearer to London possibly near Oxford.

DP is flying down to Bristol Thursday. Not looking like the best time to fly! We’re North so hoping we’ll avoid the bulk of it.

I’m on south coast. The sea was ferocious at high tide today, lots of local flooding and breaches. Luckily I’m not right on the coast, 3 miles from the beach but have friends who have been asking for help with flooded gardens.
