As we're a few weeks away from the start of meteorological autumn (1st September), some early thoughts here.

Autumn 2023 weather prospects

A look at the weather prospects for the meteorological autumn in the UK

So bored of mild weather.

Pixiedust1234 · 02/10/2023 16:46

Mild weather ❤
Wet weather 😡

House is starting to feel very damp now, especially when touching the banister rail and internal doors. But I need the windows open because it's warm... gah!!

justasking111 · 02/10/2023 17:25

I'm dithering about lighting the fire because it's so damp, but not cold. 😪

Delatron · 02/10/2023 17:25

Looks lovely this weekend right through to Tuesday next week.

Tricyrtis2022 · 02/10/2023 17:26

Started hearing thunder here a few minutes ago. West Oxfordshire.

Quite a bit too

We've had thundery thunderstorms since 3 and a couple of power cuts, one lasted best party of an hour which was quite annoying.
I am hoping that's it done for the day.
Still muggy though.

BiddyPop · 03/10/2023 08:53

We had torrential rain on Saturday (but still took the Cubs boating 🚣‍♀️🤣 last of the season). It was still nice and mild, and not windy at all.

By yesterday though, there was a distinct chill in the air and a dull grey day. It's still got the chill in the air today but at least the sun has emerged again so there might be hot water tonight (barely lukewarm yesterday from the solar). We're thinking about going back to solar just heating the top half of the tank for winter (to get less of it but properly hot water - rather than a full tank of barely had the chill taken off).

Comedycook · 03/10/2023 09:16

This weekend is predicted to be 26degrees in London. I'm so happy and excited! Haven't felt that autumn chill in the air yet...nowhere near putting the heating on. Still have windows open most of the time. I find winter unbearably depressing so always hope it's a short one.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/10/2023 10:25

Weather in central and south east London for past few days has been hot and very humid. Thunderstorm yesterday afternoon.

I can cope with most things but humidity gives me headaches etc (especially when traipsing through Fortnum and Mason on Sunday trying to find a late place for afternoon tea!).

GloriaSmud · 03/10/2023 11:27

We had a few rumbles of thunder yesterday evening but torrential-type rain for most of the night - everywhere's muddy again this morning.

Looking good weather-wise for most of the country for the next week. ☀

We had a brief power-cut last night followed by a brown-out, which I've never seen before. Apparently it was connected to a power plant in Oxford being struck by lightning.

justasking111 · 03/10/2023 12:47

That gas plant explosion near Oxford last night was incredible

Tricyrtis2022 · 03/10/2023 13:11

The pictures in the local paper were certainly impressive. Quite a show by the looks of things.

Delatron · 03/10/2023 14:21

Oh that’s awful. I hope he pulls through.

We had lots of thunder and lightning here yesterday afternoon/early evening (S. Bucks) I was hoping the outdoor hockey training would be cancelled. The thunder did ease off before training so I hope it would have been cancelled if the storms continued. A lesson to take it seriously.

TheOnlyMrsW · 03/10/2023 15:44

Oh that's so sad, hope that he pulls through. Something similar happened in Blackpool (last year possibly or the year before) and a young boy died, we need to take the weather so seriously 😢. Was coming on to whinge about our wet, cold weather in East Lancs but will be grateful instead!

Thurlarder · 03/10/2023 16:27

People always take the piss out of me for refusing to go outside if a thunderstorm is forecast. No one seems to take it remotely seriously.

Tricyrtis2022 · 03/10/2023 16:44

I work outside and take it very seriously. If a thunderstorm starts up while I'm working there's no way I'll stay outside and I don't care who gets cross about it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/10/2023 22:03

Wise people on here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/10/2023 21:56

There are some signs that the weekend heat may hang on until Tuesday or Wednesday in the south.

Pixiedust1234 · 04/10/2023 22:46

I'm hoping it stays dry long enough for me to cut the lawn. I'm losing the squirrels and pigeons in it and I can only see the tips of the stray cat's ears 😬

Smoky1107 · 04/10/2023 22:50

I'm going to have to wear linen trousers to work early next week! Madness.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 05/10/2023 07:03

It was chilly at the bus stop half an hour ago, and there was a fairly brisk and cool wind (gusting to 24 mph) on Tuesday when I was out walking. It's beginning to feel a bit autumnal here.

I think where I live is forecast 21° (but feels like 17 or something) for Sunday. But much cooler in the mornings and evenings, when I'm mostly outside 😂

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/10/2023 07:53

GFS lost the plot last night and went from temperatures in the mid teens for northern England next Wednesday, to widespread snow across parts of Wales, Scotland and northern England by the Saturday.

As it stands this morning, it shows temperatures plummeting from the north over Wednesday/Thursday and the risk of snow over Eryri (Snowdonia) and Scottish hills by next weekend. Hill walkers beware! But not the breaking laws of physics winter wonderland that it showed last night.

However this is just one model, though it does sit in the middle of the Ensembles, with a mix of average and more extreme scenarios as solutions.

ECMWF also shows a big cool down from Wednesday/Thursday. It extends to next Saturday at present.

I think if the cool down does occur as rapidly as the models suggest might happen, then the transition could be interesting with squall lines developing across the cold front.

Do remember though that next weekend is way, way off in modelling land and far too early to forecast the weather for then. These are simply computer modelled possible scenarios.
