Spring Weather watch

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

Breaking news: I have put my Big Coat on to wash so it can go in the cupboard.

If we get any colder snaps, I shall just shiver.

Oh hello! I've been away this week so missed you, checking in!

Nimrode · 24/03/2023 18:26

Can I join? I don't have horses or a pond with frogspawn but would like to know what's happening with the weather.

KnickerlessParsons · 24/03/2023 18:36

Despite the start of British Summer Time at the weekend,

Well...thats totally missed me so I'm very grateful you posted that, even if it was hidden under a pile of frogspawn

Happens every year 😁

There's a weather expert on MN called Ohyoubadbadkitten who might know. I don't know how to tag her(him/they) though.

Ah! Don't know what happened there. I meant to post that on another thread where someone was asking about some technical weather terminology. I thought OhYouBadBadKitten might know the answer.
😊

When it's snows over Easter I know who to blame !

I did a pond tidy up last weekend and my pond is heaving with newts, which is always a good sign of spring ahoy

More breaking news: I’ve put the heating back on.

NewBootsAndRanty · 24/03/2023 19:41

We're greeting BST where I am with a dip to -1° overnight on Sunday/Monday Grin

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/03/2023 19:44

Ours is a dip of 1. I always knew the heating was going back on this weekend.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2023 19:44

Grin Rafa. March is so fickle.

This isn't a forecast, its just a chart from a single model run. But I believe its the first 20c chart of the year from GFS.

Breaking news. I didn't light the fire today. The log burner has been working daily right through the winter. The conservatory is getting hot now which is very welcome. Our seedlings are thriving.

justasking111 · 24/03/2023 20:55

Hope you've all ordered your fans AC units, or whatever we discussed this winter to keep cool. The prices will rise along with the temperature

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2023 22:47

Grin not sure what I've started with the breaking news!

It is a good idea to start preparing for summer. Of course we can't forecast it yet, but the trend for both temperatures and prices seem to both be on an upward trajectory.

OYBBK - 😀
I'm not putting away any coats yet - I need them for the allotment plus we're going on holiday to Yorkshire next Friday for a week and looking at the temperatures at the moment, it isn't just warm coats that might be needed! <packs extra jumpers>

Plit · 25/03/2023 08:14

I'm still putting my electric blanket on when I get into bed but haven't lit the woodburner for a few days and the cardboard is backing up!!

megletthesecond · 25/03/2023 10:50

My first sunflowers in pots have popped up. I wanted to get them ahead of the slugs. Will put loads more in this weekend.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/03/2023 21:25

After a chilly start to this week, including a very cold night in parts of Scotland tonight, we go back to mild and wet.

I'm pretty surprised to see that the mean central England temperature is almost 1c above average. It's felt colder to me. I think this must be because of how dull it has been.

Thank you for the thread @OhYouBadBadKitten ! Came on MN to find someone to tell me the weather is going to improve and I won't hear anything to the contrary 😁.
There is an absolutely beautiful magnolia tree at the bottom of my road, and couple of fab cherry trees too. I was hoping spring had sprung but I've had to put the heating on again this evening, it's bloody chilly.
So, so tired of all the mud. DDog loves a muddy puddle and we have clay soil - it's a nightmare to wash him off. And he needs 2 walks a day 😳. Can't imagine what it's like for you horsey lot!

Plit · 26/03/2023 23:14

I am not joking when I say my electric blanket has given me so much joy

stillherenow · 27/03/2023 13:27

@Plit same here, I can’t imagine I’m how I managed without it !

My big coat been washed and back in the cupboard. I’ve turned the heating down and it’s not going back on. We have oodies and I have my electric blanket for wfh. My last gas elec bill was too large and I’ve had to reduce my dd below what they advise. Luckily I have solar panels so I’m getting a ton of washing done today while the sun is out, I plan to be much more mindful this year about using appliances when the sun is out .

I’ve got to replace my kitchen velux I think. At the weekend I spied a slug trail ACROSS MY CEILING. The windows are rotten and leak in some situations but I think slugs coming in from above may be the last straw..

Plit · 27/03/2023 14:08

Thank you for the reminder - big coat being washed as we speak - big smart coat that is - I have one I wear to the horses which is brown with mud and that can stay dirty...

Pixiedust1234 · 27/03/2023 18:58

I woke up nearly shivering this morning which I have not done since that Thursday snow shower over a week ago, had lovely sunshine during the day and now back to nearly shivering at 7pm. Hasn't the weather heard we are in Summer Time now!! 😠

We've had two huge slugs in the kitchen sink this month, travelled up the pipe. Mucho bleach has been poured down yuck

Camellia very sad flowers never opened. Buds on the magnolias. The blossom on the damsons and plum trees fantastic.
