Spring Weather watch

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

Back to rain here in Central Scotland after a brief glimpse of the sun yesterday. Am working from bed, with a hoody and gilet on, and an electric neck warmer thing and fingerless gloves. Cant afford to have the heating on during the day and its baltic.

Incredibly gloomy again today and not just the weather.

"The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) said the government hasn't achieved any of its targets and needed a policy "step change" to avoid loss of life."

Climate change: England not ready for impact

The government's advisers urge a "step change" in climate adaptation policy to avoid an increased risk to life.

Drilling down into the report you can see that there are insufficient or at best limited credible plans and progress in almost all areas. Please remember this when considering your votes in May. Ask what your local council is doing and what their plans are. Don't be taken in by empty promises that can never be fulfilled. Pretty words, not backed up by national policy are useless. We need to hold both businesses and politicians to account.

Climate change is here, we can slow it and reverse some of it, but we must also learn to adapt and become resilient. Because otherwise, those things that we enjoy; transport, power, internet, water, food and shelter are all at risk.

I'll read the report later. Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten I've been banging on forever about self sufficiency and responsibilities on here and elsewhere for years.

One thread that sticks in my mind is washing up. So many posters said washing up bowls were disgusting. Instead use a running tap to clean everything. That's more hygienic. Do this even if you have a dishwasher.

Another batshit to me is running the washing machine daily with a few bits. Well ummm no.

Running your heating day and night. More batshit buy a heavier duvet, hot water bottle. You'll sleep better.
Minimum temperature in your home 18c bullshit, put a jumper on.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/03/2023 12:48

One aspect from the report that our 'it's just summer' heatwave sceptics might appreciate is this. That last summer saw our highest rate of recorded deaths in England due to heat.

Coming back to weather, could be some decent thunderstorms in Northern Ireland today where clouds clear.

Having worked outside for much of last summer, this doesn't surprise me one bit. Last summer was really tough going, I hated it.

I read that thread about washing up and was baffled. My parents, grandparents and everyone I can remember ever seeing doing washing up fills the bowl with hot soapy water and washes the pots. Glasses first then manky things like pans last of all. Might pre-rinse stuff that's covered in lots of sauce or goop but definitely don't leave the tap running the whole time.

Devon and Cornwall thunder ⚡ 🌧️ this evening

Evening I don’t mind but I’m absolutely soaked.

Once I’m home it can rain as much as it likes. The garden will get watered.

NewBootsAndRanty · 29/03/2023 19:00

@justasking111 I'm one of those batshit heating on 24/7 people. I can use as many thick duvets as I like but they won't make any difference to the temperature of the air I'm breathing in.

I've got COPD and the medical recommendation is for a bedroom temp of 18 and living room temp of 21 if I want to try stay well.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/03/2023 19:01

A storm would be nice. I have just wet and dark.

NewBoots I totally get your point re the air.

I think the weather forecasts are pretty pants atm - in reality, no chance of sun breaking through...really grim here.

I find them awful but on Site stuff, I saw that you can see a bin at the top right, so you hit that, then your link should appear as before.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/03/2023 19:09

Looking ahead doesnt really show much scope for improvement Sad Some drier interludes but continued spells of wet, gloom and wind too. Where things do look to settle down, temperatures may dip below zero in rural areas. Not an Easter for planting out tender plants and camping may not be terribly warm.

I think we should have new, symbolic weather gifs like that!

RafaistheKingofClay · 29/03/2023 19:30

Given how dry it’s been, I don’t really want to complain about the rain. But it was torrential as I left work.

I am warm and dry now. Although I have turned the heating back on (again again). This match is fickle temp wise.

Sort of like OYBBK forecasts the weather through the medium of gifs.
