@OhYouBadBadKitten thank you. That confirms what my gut is saying. And, yes, it could be changed easily enough, if it weren't that I were the only one in the group concerned.
I would be concerned that the rain will soften the ground and trees that were already weakened yesterday will be looser and come down with the winds tomorrow.

Motorina · 19/02/2022 22:59

@RagzRebooted you have said almost word for word what I said. It's been pretty torrential. There are lots of trees that look like it wouldn't take much more for them to go.

@OhYouBadBadKitten that's it, isn't it? The overwhelming likelyhood is they'll have a lovely blustery walk. Which is why I keep changing my mind.

Millionairenow · 19/02/2022 23:41

Motorina

I absolutely love walking in woods but no chance I'd go tomorrow. High winds again and rain sodden ground, weakened trees, definitely be giving the woods a wide berth for a few days at least.

Just back from a party, where I've been talking to a coastguard friend. This isn't the first time he's provided me with a behind the scenes perspective on how close we were to everything going seriously tits up (anyone remember that Russian ship that went aground off Falmouth a couple of years ago? It was all fine, but apparently we were only a sandbar away from massive oil spillages etc etc).

Apparently if the wind had kicked in an hour or two earlier, on a rising tide, tidal surges and flooding would have been MUCH worse. As it turns out, the tides in the Bristol Channel were 10-30 cm less than predicted. Weston Super Mare was predicted to be absolutely trashed. Coastguard flood (prevention? Alleviation? Sorry, a bit drunk) teams had been brought in from other parts of the UK and stationed in the Bristol area, to be deployed where needed, but in the end...It was all (relatively) OK. (Compared to what it could have been, l mean).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/02/2022 08:08

Two concerns over the next couple of days

 1. Generally strong winds today 40mph or so, with the potential for a nasty squall line developing and travelling rapidly down the country from mid afternoon to early mid evening.

 2. Tomorrow's low pressure with inland gusts 50-60mph.

Sorry that's short, I'm heading out today and just seen the time.

I'm probably too far north but if any of the Kernow Krowd ( or north Devon, I'm not fussy) are without power and want a hot meal/ drink/ shower/ charge of phone, pm me. We have electricity..

WreckTangled · 20/02/2022 08:53

We're still without power. 46 hours now, all electric so no heating or hot water. Our toothbrushes have run out of battery Hmm I've just driven two miles to get signal on my phone. The power tracker online now shows no faults in our area so I've just reported again. I'm really pissed off now. We've been through stupid amounts of fuel driving to family for warmth and showers, getting dressed in the morning or for bed is horrible because our clothes are all freezing and poor dd has run out of clean pants.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2022 09:00

What a nightmare, Wreck. Even worse that they've apparently forgotten about you.

WreckTangled · 20/02/2022 09:02

A friend phoned and apparently the admitted that they don't actually know when we will be back on

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2022 09:09

Is it your whole village?

I hope you can get washing done somewhere today.

mrshoho · 20/02/2022 09:18

What a nightmare for you Wreck. That must be miserable getting up in the morning. At least when our heating was broken we had electric fan heaters but you've got nothing. I hope they get you back up and running soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/02/2022 09:33

What a nightmare.
I understand that power companies are really struggling. What I don't understand is why their communication is so consistently poor.

hoochyhag · 20/02/2022 09:36

Oh Wreck, hope it's back on soon.

These threads have made me get torch/matches etc to hand just in case.

Today seems worse due to the rain. Don't know how much more my fences will take.

Thank you Kitten for the updates, we are so grateful to you.

Keep safe

Motorina · 20/02/2022 09:44

Thanks, everyone for your advise. Decided not to go. Gutted.

Wreck, I hope you get power back soon.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2022 10:09

Our local trains are affected, but as they're a local service they aren't on that list. They've cancelled trains at the point the gusts are forecast to be highest.

WreckTangled · 20/02/2022 10:38

Yes it's our whole village. Some people have generators. Found some engineers down by the farm and they said they're hoping to have it back on today, they know we're all off but the call handlers and website don't 🙄

Blossom987 · 20/02/2022 10:39

Met office have now named Storm Franklin.

CaveMum · 20/02/2022 10:50

A friend of mine lives in the Netherlands, they were hit late Saturday. Her husband spent 3 hours hanging on to a skylight in the roof of their new house (moved in a few days ago!) as it turns out to have a broken hinge and was flapping wildly!

HesterShaw1 · 20/02/2022 12:10

@Blossom987

Met office have now named Storm Franklin.
Getting bored now. It's just so noisy apart from anything else
WreckTangled · 20/02/2022 12:20

I'm worried the gusts are too strong now for them to be out fixing the power lines. Not sure what the rules are but they're over 40mpg and forecast to get up to almost 50.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/02/2022 13:44

It's very blowy and blustery here.

We're fine for electricity but several friends not too far away are not doing so well.

Can anyone remind me what sunshine looks like?

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2022 14:16

We had brief spells of sunshine this week, just to keep the memory fresh! Nothing to write home about, however!
