I heard that too, though I'm not close enough to enough trees for that o be a factor I think. It was audible even when the gusts were not directly impacting my location. I put it down to gusts nearby or overhead wind, given the atmosphere is 3d. It lasted for a prolonged time, would ease a little and then come back.

Just placemarking in case I lose you again Grin

Tonsiltrouble · 19/02/2022 11:59

We went for a walk this morning and there are lots of trees down locally, some big ones. It was lovely this morning but a bit grim out there again now. Our house appeared to be somehow sheltered and I don’t quite understand why, maybe it’s wind direction, because I think it sounded worse from the house the other evening. But I heard the loud roar of the winds high up in the atmosphere.

LIZS · 19/02/2022 12:02

Ds currently on a train north, already slowed down due to congestion following fallen tree. Journey time already +1hour on usual due to engineering work diversion.

Titsywoo · 19/02/2022 12:07

Not too much damage around here which surprised me as we are at nearly the highest point in the SE and very exposed. Few trees and fences down.

Drove to our work offices last night to check all ok and reset the alarm but the power still out in the whole village. Felt so odd driving through with no light whatsoever from house or streetlights and all the shops and restaurants closed. Couldn't reset the alarm so will have to go back today although only some have power back apparently.

LIZS · 19/02/2022 12:25

It was weird waking up to clear blue skies, sunshine and frost this morning. Now back to grey clouds, breezy and sleety drizzle.

LesLavandes · 19/02/2022 12:42

It's all kicking off in Brighton again

itsgettingweird · 19/02/2022 12:42

Yes - thank you bad kitten for all your information, always so helpful and no doubt saves many from doing risky journeys.

Hampshire here. Nice calm morning and took ds swimming at 5.30am.

Still ok at 9/9.30 as we drove home.

Went into town to run errands and when we came out of shopping centre 12ish it's windy and raining heavily!

Good excuse to stay home again the rest of the day Grin

Stravaig · 19/02/2022 13:02

Well done the South! That was scarily wild weather affecting millions of people who'd not experienced it before. The forecasts, risk-assessments, safety precautions - it all helped mitigate much worse damage and many more deaths. I hope you're all safe this morning and the cleanup is not too daunting.

@HemanOrSheRa You are my storm prep goddess, making pasties and cake. I aspire to this from now on.

'Tying down the kids' typo - wonderful image of sending the bairns out to play securely tethered on bungee rope :D

(Highlands here, just some snow, first properly wintry day. Feels odd for the storms to be elsewhere.)

BewareTheLibrarians · 19/02/2022 13:24

@Fordian That might have been me - I posted about hearing a low rumble/growly sound. It was definitely more noticeable when the gusts were stronger. We do have a row of very tall trees directly behind our garden, and when the kitchen floor started vibrating, I did wonder if the root system was taking a hit.

However, it did at times sound like the rumble was coming from higher up, possibly stronger/faster higher-level winds than we’re used to?

LIZS · 19/02/2022 13:31

Still some areas locally with no power

PickAChew · 19/02/2022 13:52

DH and Ds2 went for a walk, this morning, and either Dudley or Eunice have felled a lot of trees around the nearby nature reserve.

We have this style of fence. Much more windproof than panels. Slats can be alternated either side of the support for more privacy. Still not failsafe mind. DH is out working out how to replace a post on a half height version, out the front. It developed a wobble during storm Malik and we thought it might have come loose in the ground. Turns out it had snapped.

Ocsetldil · 19/02/2022 13:57

Thanks for the pointers to this thread #3.

Power back on this morning but the weather in North Norfolk is now frightful. Cold, windy heavy rain.

BewareTheLibrarians · 19/02/2022 14:03

We have a similar style PickAChew and they held up really well. They got a bit wobbly in last years storm, so we had concrete reinforcements put in - concrete posts about a third of the fence’s height attached to every fence post then cemented into the ground. That’s kept it safe through this storm, despite part of it trying to take off! Might be a good tactic for anyone who’s been left with a wobbly fence.

justasking111 · 19/02/2022 14:13

We've another storm coming in tonight lasting a day. Anything wibbly wobbly will suffer again

LesLavandes · 19/02/2022 14:19

Where are you?

PickAChew · 19/02/2022 14:32

The yellow warning area for wind is similar to yesterday's Amber area.

That post snapping is worse than it not being bedded in properly. DH is out there trying to crowbar this lump of concrete out, muttering about regretting doing a proper job of putting it in 🤣

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2022 14:36

In an odd way, for some tomorrow the weather might sound worse as it will be accompanied by heavy rain for part of it.

Today's rain needs to sod off so I can get out for a walk around the area. Radar tells me it is not raining. It is incorrect.

We are in N Essex, our power was off for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon and then went off again in the early hours of this morning. Thankfully it has just come back on again about 20 mins ago as the estimate was tomorrow afternoon at the earliest!

Have everything charging again in case it goes back off! Pleased to have the heating back on to warm the house up!

justasking111 · 19/02/2022 15:52

Lots of snow arriving in Leeds DS sent pictures

TheDogsMother · 19/02/2022 15:52

West Sussex with loads of trees down and still no power

thereinmadnesslies · 19/02/2022 15:53

Our power has been off since 10am yesterday and the time estimate for the fix keeps moving later and later. I understand that UKPower Networks have a lot to do right now but it would help if they could provide meaningful updates about the problem and timescales.

Windstartingup · 19/02/2022 15:55

Yes, so tomorrow in SE looks quite bad again re wind

Windstartingup · 19/02/2022 15:56

Feel for you all without power, must be awful xx
