On Salisbury Plain here, not far from Stonehenge

We lost 75ft of fence, and almost a polycarbonate greenhouse. The only reason we didn't was because I was in it when it tried to take off!
I grabbed the strut and stood there thinking what the bloody hell do I do now!. DH was at work and I didn't dare let go.
Luckily it was my birthday and next door came through the gate with a present. She ran for help and 3 over 60 women and, one partially disabled and a poor 50 year old recovering from covid managed to throw ropes over the green house and tie it down and prop the fence until DH managed to get home.

He pushed the fence totally over and threw sand bags on it.

This mornings task was to buy new fencing, the Hit and Miss kind and extra long concrete posts.

Quite a lot of branches still down obstructing the roads on Bucks / Berks border. I’m concerned that more stormy weather on Sunday / Monday is going to dislodge some that are still up but pretty precarious

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2022 17:54

From my jaunt around the place there are a lot of precarious trees that are ready to come down.

Eek.

I was hoping for a walk to the park tomorrow but will put it off as advised. It is not possible to get into either local park without going under some tall old trees.

purplesequins · 19/02/2022 18:00

high winds and heavy rain here now.
flood warning for a high tide.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/02/2022 18:01

MaggiesGirl EEK! But it just shows that over 60s women are the best and not the feeble and feeble-minded dispensable rubbish that some of MN would have you believe!
Good on you all!

I went food shopping this morning and was very relieved to get home. When I set off it had been sunny and not particularly blowy. By the time I got back it was very gusty and that has only intensified as the day has gone on (South East London). I'm listening to it and wondering how bad it's going to get tonight.

Egghead68 · 19/02/2022 18:20

North London. Fence and guttering down here. Quite blowy this evening but nothing extreme.

Similar in my area too OYBBK, tomorrow & Monday will see a few more come down I think.

For everyone who has had power cuts , I hope your service is restored very soon . Please consider how you will be affected in future if the roll out of wireless only telephone networks isn’t stopped . Loss of power means no phone service and lots of people don’t have smart phones

drinkingwineoutofamug · 19/02/2022 18:46

Downloaded the windy app. Fascinating watching all the colours. Sunday and Monday will be interesting for all if correct .

CharlesChickens · 19/02/2022 18:57

Meant to be driving a long way tomorrow, I am a bit worried now. Will avoid the most tree lined route but it looks as though it will still be windy doesn’t it ? There will be some tree lined roads. Wales to Gloucestershire.

We've only just got mobile signal back after losing it at lunchtime yesterday. Totally out of communication with the outside world for over 24 hours (well, not me as I went to work and thankfully they had power and signal). We don't use our land line much and don't have a basic handset so no landline and I was telling DH about the change to VOIP. He had no idea.

Yes, I was eyeing them nervously on my way home from work as it had got windy again, was okay this morning.

Power just teased us, did a lot of flickering and done stuff came back for a minute but then it all went away again. Latest update had said 10:30-11:30pm but now seems to be saying tomorrow afternoon! It's hard to pinpoint our outage on the map as half the village (same 1st half of postcode) is on a different circuit so some people got theirs back this afternoon. There are 3 outages on the map covering surrounding areas and we are obviously one of them, but it isn't clear which.

GreenFingeredNell15 · 19/02/2022 20:42

So windy in the Midlands today

OrangeSamphire · 19/02/2022 21:35

Still no power here in Cornwall. Not expected on until Tuesday despite being on the priority services register for disability/medical equipment.

Western Power are totally inundated. Saw a load of their vans outside the pub on the way home this evening from camping out at my mums to charge stuff / wash / eat. I hope their team was getting a good hot meal and a place to rest.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2022 21:54

I can imagine they are inundated. It doesn't make it warmer for you. I can imagine the novelty has worn off.

@OhYouBadBadKitten - might I ask your advice, please? I'm in Suffolk. A bunch of friends are planning on meeting tomorrow for a walk in the woods. I was really looking forward to it.

I've raised concerns and basically been told I'm over-reacting. I'm not being overcautious by not going, am I? Been second guessing myself all day.

Thank you!

I'm supposed to be traveling into London tomorrow ,is it dangerous? Should I go by car or Train I'm absolutely gutted to have missed these thread yesterday.

I'd check what your train company is saying about travel. They are far from back to normal

The winds by themselves tomorrow don't look too terrible, if they were taken in isolation without yesterday's winds weakening trees. The modelled squall line that looks to pass through London mid evening could be fairly nasty though. I want to see how that evolves in tomorrow's models.

Personally, even though normally I'd opt for the train, for the chance of least disruption I'd go by car tomorrow. I'd use some caution and I certainly would stay away from wooded areas.

Motorina you sound sensible to me. Can the venue of the walk be changed?

OP posts:
Motorina · 19/02/2022 22:36

@OhYouBadBadKitten thank you. That confirms what my gut is saying. And, yes, it could be changed easily enough, if it weren't that I were the only one in the group concerned.

Tigersonvaseline · 19/02/2022 22:53

Flowers thank you kitten.

Hopefully we Will be home by 5/6.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2022 22:55

It's a horrid position to be in, especially when chances are it will be ok. I'd prefer not to take that chance though.
