@Dottydozet I don't think me panicking and wailing is going to solve climate change so if someone's comment helps me a bit and it doesn't affect you for me to feel a bit better maybe your input isn't needed 🤷🏻‍♀️
'Feeling better? Not on my watch'🙄
That's ridiculous.
If you feel panicky then it means you have a glimpse of the - very real - potential future.
Maybe you should wail a bit more and in the right direction?
'Feeling better' now isn't going to help the problem when in 10 years you say Oh I wish someone had warned us...

The last ice age was only twenty thousand years ago! - Earth is still in its settling period, she’s a toddler in age terms, despite being 4 billion years old.

She’s still fluctuating, and whilst human pollution is responsible for a comparatively small degree, your sitting on your electronic device, in your clothes made from probably mostly oil based plastics or other synthetic fabrics,, in your house warmed by fossil fuels, eating foods that have been flown across the world out of season, consuming all the latest plastic based toys and devices, flying abroad on holiday, and driving your big gas guzzlers....are worried about it being a little milder this week.

May hay while the sun shines. Go and get an allotment and grow your own food. The world isn’t ending, it’s still only just beginning.

MargaretThursday · 01/01/2022 20:31

If you pass ds he'll be wearing shorts no matter the temperature.

HesterShaw1 · 01/01/2022 20:32

@Dottydozet

The problem with thinking "oh it's all normal and will be fine/won't affect me" is that nothing changes. People continue in their lives as normal rather than mobilising and working for what change is still possible. We still have the ability to stop the most catastrophic effects of climate change. That's still within reach.

Inertia means we are fucked.

I heard an interesting discussion on Radio 4 about this very thing the other day.

People need to step up....and so do governments. People on their own will not solve this, because they will not see any benefit. Enormous changes made now will benefit their grandchildren, not them. And the benefit will be "not having a completely fucked climate and fewer of its associated horrors".

bordermidgebite · 01/01/2022 20:34

You might just be concerned about the world , I'm keen that the future includes a reasonably happy life for my children

Unsure33 · 01/01/2022 20:34

I have been sunburnt on my birthday and also had heavy snow and that’s in April

One swallow does not a summer make.

PieMistee · 01/01/2022 20:35
@froobie it's so freaky isn't it. I'm sure someone will try to claim that global warming nonsense.
And this year's Darwin award goes to...

CaveWoman1 · 01/01/2022 20:36

No it doesn’t worry me. We are supposedly at the tail-end of a mini-ice age so it’s also possible that the planet has weather “seasons” and we are naturally heading for warmer times. Also this particular warm spell is coming from the Azures - temperatures will drop dramatically next week.

Back in 1600 the Thames froze over. That’s cold!!! We don’t have winters with that level of power any more. That could’ve due to the seasonal weather change that spans hundreds of years - I’m not saying climate change isn’t happening - just that there are other key factors at play too.

Sux2Buthen · 01/01/2022 20:36

@Twillow id rather not live in total anxiety right now thank you for the idea though. It helps no one.
It's great to see so many people pooling ideas, haven't seen much of them being carried out though.
If I take a moments calm from a comment I've read that's fine by me and not to be leapt on by random posters telling me I shouldn't have that.

PieMistee · 01/01/2022 20:37

Fuck me had MN been infiltrated by fuckwits that don't understand what we are facing.

Twillow · 01/01/2022 20:38

@PieMistee

Fuck me had MN been infiltrated by fuckwits that don't understand what we are facing.
Apparently so. Scary isn't it.
Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:38

People don't want to know. They would rather seek out comments telling them it will all be fine rather than facing reality.

Seriously, anyone plodding along ignoring this right now is doing their children a massive disservice.

Postdatedpandemic · 01/01/2022 20:39

Getting an allotment won't cut it. I live in a town of 20,000 people and 20 allotments.

Voting for people who will do something may cut it. Not just in merry old UK but people everywhere need to vote for change.

SusannaQueen · 01/01/2022 20:40

Forecast 10 (feels like 7) degrees where I am tomorrow. Not hugely abnormal, La Nina won't be helping, we'll probably be freezing our arses off in a couple weeks.

SusannaQueen · 01/01/2022 20:46

People don't want to know. They would rather seek out comments telling them it will all be fine rather than facing reality.

It's difficult to know what to do, I recycle, rarely fly, grow stuff, buy second hand, don't eat much meat, but live in an isolated place, so do use my car a lot and burn wood. I also can't afford to change my 16yr old car.
I'm not a denier, I do what I can, I worry for the world my child will live in. But the "we're all going to burn" hand wringing isn't helping anyone.

Timeisavirtue · 01/01/2022 20:47

I wear shorts all year round at work, it’s what ever your comfortable in 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:48

But the "we're all going to burn" hand wringing isn't helping anyone.

Read my posts. That's the opposite of what I'm advocating.

MerryChristmas21 · 01/01/2022 20:49

@Cocoabutterformula

Why on Earth are people 'freaking out'?

We live on a living planet, temperatures change. Nothing to feel 'weird' or 'freaked out' by.

Not quite sure where to start with this quite honestly Hmm

Then scroll on past if you've nothing to say.
Ladybyrd · 01/01/2022 20:49

Unless it's the postman, anyone wearing shorts in December gives me anxiety.

oatmilk4breakfast · 01/01/2022 20:50

The climate is changing. London’s climate will be similar to Barcelona’s now by 2050.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/environment-and-conservation201907londons-climate-will-resemble-barcelonas-2050-study-reveals/amp

Warming by at least 1.5 degrees is baked in now. No hope of changing it. But I am trying to think of any and all ways as an individual to put pressure on companies and Govt to keep COP26 pledges and focus on keeping global heating less than 2 degrees than now. Higher and the planet becomes mostly uninhabitable for human life.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2022 20:51

What we can all do - accept climate change is real, it is here and is having an impact. Then do our best in our own imperfect ways to reduce our personal footprint. Don't give up because you can't lead a climate perfect life, just do something. Collectively we can make it less bad than it might be.

Nenemum · 01/01/2022 20:54

Look, there’s two camps on this issue. Both camp is laughing at the other’s lack of insight/education. You’re as bad as eachother.

None of you here are environmental scientists (or cosmologists or meteorologists for that matter, equally relevant).

So everything you read on boards like this one are just ultimately unadulterated and worthless opinions, expressed for entertainment value only, padding out the algorithm that keeps websites like this generating clicks for advertiser cash. That’s all normal.

Unless you’re one of the scientific disciplines mentioned above, in which case, show your credentials and put everyone here to rights.

But a mummy chat forum isn’t the place for hard scientific facts.....you’re all in the wrong part of the internet if you really care about this stuff, rather than casting a flippant comment with your tea and cake.

Postdatedpandemic · 01/01/2022 20:56

@Nenemum do you have secret plans to have all women with post graduate qualifications sterilised?

oatmilk4breakfast · 01/01/2022 20:56

Sorry hadn’t read the thread when I posted. Hello to the people who are willing to talk about it. I experience the cognitive dissonance of not being able to talk about the most important things happening right now every day, and every day I have to battle down anxiety and fight to stay sane in the face of how surreal and huge it is.

Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:57

Nenemum your misogyny is showing.
