Today's thunderstorm potential

Plenty of potential for some rather juicy thunderstorms today. As always, just because they are forecast, it doesn't mean that everyone in an area will get one - its quite possible for one town to be hit badly and the other stay dry.

So we have a low pressure interacting with a trough, to destabilise the atmosphere. High values of CAPE (convective available potential energy) However, the risk is still fairly marginal at present.

I think the strongest risk is to the west of the IOW this afternoon, evening, then developing further north in the west as we go through the night, where storms could become severe. Potential for large hail, frequent lightning and flash flooding. A low potential at present for funnel clouds.

I'm on the west of IOW so I'll keep you posted...

Makinglists · 18/07/2017 13:52

Storm started here about 20 mins ago lots of loud bangs

Slimthistime · 18/07/2017 13:56

Oh I was just posting about the humidity! That said, here the forecast is possible storms tonight but not a break in humidity tomorrow. Weird.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2017 14:03

Good stuff MakingLists :) sounds like so far it's doing as expected. Lucky you with your vantage point!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2017 14:57

South Wiltshire here, and was rather looking forward to some storms from about lunchtime on, but they seem to have moved to later this eve. I hope it doesn't rain too hard, esp for Exmoor, as ds and his gf have gone for their very first holiday together and they are camping Shock

summerfruitsquash · 18/07/2017 15:25

I'm going to be really cross of none of these storms hit Essex. I'm tired of then putting out a warning every week only to still have a horribly dry, brown lawn.

I also just want to watch the lightning too. Blush

Though lightning maps is showing a promising looking swathe of storms crossing the channel...

alcibiades · 18/07/2017 15:40

Looking very interesting for me here in central Hampshire (where weather hardly ever happens!). I went out a bit earlier to do food shopping and it was horribly humid and the air just felt heavy. Still, needs must, because there's only one thing better than observing a thunderstorm and that's a TS + Cake + Wine.

Seems to be all down South, our warning has been downgraded, North East England

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2017 17:00

keeping an eye on where its all heading in between meetings. I think the NE could be out of luck, but maybe overnight... possibly.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2017 17:02

seems at the moment to be heading NNE. (come my way you little beauties!)

the southampton storms seem to by dying out as they head inland. Frustrating.

Please please tell me the north Cotswolds will miss it? Especially if there's hail mixed in please.

Crops in the fields are just about ready to harvest and heavy rain and hail will be a disaster!!! And I will have to put up with a very grumpy dh trying to combine flat crops Sad

Happy to have thunder and lightning though just not torrential rain.

alcibiades · 18/07/2017 18:56

It looks like Bournemouth is getting quite a bit of activity.

alcibiades · 18/07/2017 19:10

And now Southampton - not too far away from me.

Just heard what sounded like a rumble.

glitterglitters · 18/07/2017 19:12

I'm in Portsmouth and willing a storm so badlY. It's SOOOOOO STICKY Sad

Mooey89 · 18/07/2017 19:15

Portsmouth here too - grey ominous sky and hoping for reprieve in the sticky heat!

BIWI · 18/07/2017 19:15

Blimey it's all going on in Southern Europe!

alcibiades · 18/07/2017 19:18
