uh oh

No idea where this sprung up from, I've been a bit neglectful. Warnings of a short period of 70-80mph winds. Very nasty. Met office warning of widespread disruption, unsurprising if winds are to be that strong.

Can people keep this one bumped please, its going to catch a lot of people out I think.

So I shored up everything in the back garden and it's the damn side fence that's gone, the huge posts holding it in have literally snapped in the ground Shock It's still incredibly wild here, I'm very worried about dh driving home later. We're really exposed here and there have been a lot of trees uprooted and lorries tipping over today Sad

LIZS · 23/02/2017 15:59

Still pretty windy down south. Fence panel has broken and shed roof fascia off.

AnotherYellowBelly · 23/02/2017 16:02

Grinwaves at sobriquet from 5 minutes up the road!!

The newer building behind the tree that blew down is the council offices so you think someone would have noticed the tree was in bad shape.
Luckily nobody was hurt. The buildings to the left of the picture are a children's nursery.

atheistmantis · 23/02/2017 16:03

They've now named the woman who died :( her poor family :(

RortyCrankle · 23/02/2017 16:16

I'm in Buckinghamshire looking out of my french doors at my garden - anything not tied down is now scattered to all corners of the garden, pots, plastic bags, buckets, watering cans, recently potted plants knocked over, soil spilled out, an assortment of pots have landed in the bird bath on the ground.

Not going out or I can see me and my waking frame taking off over the hedge Mary Poppins style.

Particularly heart-warming moment in the first video where people are helping each other walk through the high winds.

Mummylin · 23/02/2017 16:24

We had nothing this morning apart from a little wind and sunshine. This afternoon we have had quite strong gusts and my birdbath has blown over and smashed. Still no rain or anything else.

BarchesterFlowers · 23/02/2017 16:34

How is your DD getting on Demented?

We are home thankfully, just a couple of roof tiles off and our outdoor sofa things have travelled a bit but everything else is fine.

I hate flying but oddly I think that today's hideous flights made it better for me somehow.

Sympathy to everyone still travelling/stuck/without power.

RandomMess · 23/02/2017 16:40

I am finally home, the train was stampeded at Lancaster Shock clearly the first train southbound in quite some time...

GloriaSmud · 23/02/2017 16:49

Done the school run ~ bits of trees and wheelie bins everywhere.
Bit late in the day but the BBC have got live updates here.

notsomanky ~ the Iceland flight is mentioned on netweather's messageboard here. I was watching it on flightradar and it spent ages (think it was about an hour) circling after its attempted landings at Manchester and Liverpool.

Heyheyheygoodbye · 23/02/2017 16:51

A colleague got a call from his wife to say their tree had come down and smashed their NDN's summerhouse Shock

DH works from home and had to deal with an hour-long power cut and an incessantly wailing alarm.

I got seriously buffeted in the car and was very glad to get home. Several huge trees down on the A roads around my house.

DM said that she and her cul-de-sac o' pensioners have all been playing Catch The Bin, and that she narrowly avoided getting hit by a falling bit of roof at the garden centre. I have requested that she stay inside for the rest of the day!

notsomanky · 23/02/2017 17:28

Gloria DD's friend said it was awful - girls being sick, crying and understandably upset! I've seen some of the footage of the aborted landing - and if they had to circle no wonder they were close to running out of fuel!

This Geography field trip to Iceland will be memorable for all the wrong reasons!

AquaLatte · 23/02/2017 17:33

We've lost a big old tree and some roof tiles.

Possibly decamping to a hotel. Massive oak over the house isn't looking too happy Confused

dementedma · 23/02/2017 18:04

ffs. Dd has been stuck at airport for over 8 hours. Finally gave up and tried to get train back to central London. Told the trains not running because of problems with signalling. Told to get a bus. Tried to get a bus. told all buses are booked. Now exhausted and in tears. Heading back to the airport and will sleep there tonight.

I get that strong winds can ground flights but the fact that every other method of public transport is also unusable is ridiculous

Stopyourhavering · 23/02/2017 18:11

....N Wales-no power since 8am.... no heating/ light .... getting cold- may have to go to bed! Brrrrr

RedBugMug · 23/02/2017 18:14

oh no, your poor dd demented
it's shit, on the other side of london qe bridge is closed which means gridlock in wide parts.

RedBugMug · 23/02/2017 18:15

thinking of you who are badly affected - especially those without power hope everything is up and running soon without too much damage.

dementedma · 23/02/2017 18:26

update! dds boyfriend's parents' friends of friends are on their way to rescue her, take her home with them and then take her back to airport tomorrow. i don't know these people but I LOVE them! DD has met them before at a family do and is so grateful she's in floods of tears. (BF is in Scotland and his parents, who ironically live fairly near Stansted, are away on holiday!). DD is worried that she's going to cry all over them when they arrive. Bless!
Mark and Deborah, whoever you are, THANKYOU!

BarchesterFlowers · 23/02/2017 18:30

That is really lovely Demented, nice to hear Smile, poor girl, I would cry too, relief, kindness, tiredness, all sorts of things combined.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 23/02/2017 18:32

Demented what a happy update! Your poor DD. No one could blame her (or you!) for crying!

dementedma · 23/02/2017 18:52

I will definitely be paying this one forward...

BarchesterFlowers · 23/02/2017 18:58

I just heard that the M11 is closed in both directions near Stansted, due to an overturned lorry on one side, not sure what on the other side.

dementedma · 23/02/2017 19:17

oh lord, those poor kindly people will be stuck in that trying to rescue DD!!

LynnGay159 · 23/02/2017 19:23

Well I lost fence panels and a trampoline today but what really annoyed me was my dc school (less than a minute to walk to ) let all the children have playtimes and lunch break outside.

GloriaSmud · 23/02/2017 19:24

notsomanky poor girls ~ it's enough to put people off flying when you have that sort of experience.
dementedma ~ that's the sort of news your DD needed after a day like today!
