uh oh

No idea where this sprung up from, I've been a bit neglectful. Warnings of a short period of 70-80mph winds. Very nasty. Met office warning of widespread disruption, unsurprising if winds are to be that strong.

Can people keep this one bumped please, its going to catch a lot of people out I think.

Glad DD sorted dementedma or would offered a sofa as we only couple miles from airport

dementedma · 23/02/2017 20:10

Thank you wheel that's very kind. She has been retrieved and is headed for dinner, a hot bath and a bed! The kindness of strangers...

Heyheyheygoodbye · 23/02/2017 20:33

OH Demented how lovely

runninglikemad · 23/02/2017 20:34

oh dementedma that is such a lovely story, really does restore your faith in humankind. Bet there are many more like it across the land Smile.

dementedma · 23/02/2017 20:50

So relieved she isn't sleeping at the airport tonight!

SoleBizzz · 23/02/2017 20:53

Got back from Aberystwyth fine. No problems.

Wetoopere · 23/02/2017 21:37

@RandomMess it's Preston I was supposed to be at. Trains are bad enough at the best of times, it's often a stampede at Lancaster!!

RandomMess · 23/02/2017 22:29

Wetoopere - they were rammed like cattle going to market!!! Very glad to have got off, not holding out much hope for the more people who were hoping to get to Euston...

ds complained that there was not amber wind here. ( w mids )he may not be the most reliable judge of wind.

it was not too bad noise wise. not sure which way the weather was blowing to make it quieter or whether it was just drowned out by dc and stampy videos.

we had power all day. the roof still seems to be on with no damage as far as I know. the trees I can see easily are still there. nobody has buzzed the door to say the ones at the back have collapsed or anything (onto my garage). there are scattered sticks on the grass which are about 3 foot long judging by my ability to see them from up here. (second/third floors at the top) local church was having a funeral. someone had parked on our drive blocking it. not sure if they were blocked in though as I could not see what was in front of them due to the building blocking the view. there are recycling bags still on the bin shed so they may not have been collected but the rubbish bags have gone. apart from mine which is still in the kitchen as I forgot to take it down yesterday and was not going to bother this morning

I have yet to go to contact mother. (e mids) she rang earlier but there was a pixel related drama going on here so did not have chance to talk much. I shall go and see what the damage is there as well. it may be an interesting drive tomorrow as it is winding small A road. It has been closed before due to trees down.

We had a lot of wheelie bins go for a walk in Dun Laoghaire on Wed night/thurs am - Thursday being collection day locally. Lots actually knocked over still full, so plenty of papers blowing on the paths.

DD was out on sailing camp all week in the harbor - they did chart work on Monday sitting in a moored yacht, actually got out in dinghies on Tuesday, Wednesday was sailing in a big yacht (too windy for dinghies), and yesterday only managed to get out in the powerboat for a short while before retreating again to theory stuff, tying everyone up on chairs (knot practice) and football (only 10 there in total this week so not dreadful for bashing into each other). I have no idea what they will manage today.

DH had great fun trying to get home last night from LGW - trains not running and then changing platform last minute when the first train in an hour turned up (he can put on a burst of speed when needed), planes delayed all over the place (the plane before his was still in LGW almost 2 hours after planned departure, when DH arrived there!) and mega confusion, but he did get home before midnight and said it wasn't as bumpy as he expected (between seeing the weather and pilot warning them before departure!).

I am just going to check the forecast for the weekend as we have a rare family weekend together, no Cubs tomorrow morning so a relaxed start, DD has sailing tomorrow afternoon (regular Saturday club) and all day Sunday (a performance clinic, cancelled due to high winds 2 weeks ago!), and it would be nice if she got some of those. And if DH and I got to do some spring cleaning jobs at home.

doris has lifted the roof and beams away from the brickwork on the garages. lucky not to get a brick through the car window.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2017 08:55

cripes Blackeyed. Can you describe the sort of location the garages are in and the direction that the roof was lifted in?

long block of gargaes. facing north, north east ish. lifted on the nne side, in a big gust apparently according to neighbour who saw immediately before and after. ) will take a photo when got space/charge on phone and pm you. apparently the roof was flapping about a bit. new roof too. attached really well to the beams. shame the beams were not attached really well to the bloody walls.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/02/2017 10:22

ps it is probably not as dramatic as I make out. I don't get out much!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2017 10:28

thanks for the update :) was there any other damage locally?

OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 27/02/2017 14:22

yes. noticed two to three ridge tiles off a building further down the hill. ridge running approx west east. and large branch off tree near tower block but that is always horrid in the wind. oh and I suspect the velux window on one of the taller buildings here as that has been open unevenly for a few days. lots of twigs/sticks off trees as per normal windy days but not seen anything else. that was all that was left to see today.

have photos but not putting on thread. justt got them before the men arrived to fix it.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/02/2017 14:23

though they were sayig they could not understand how it lifted off as there is not much for the wind to get under.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2017 08:35

Can you pm me please and we can chat more off the thread.
