Inappropriate photo op for William and catherine

This was at an event this week. But the photo just made me gasp. It looks like the elderly woman is being used as a prop, rather than being treated in a dignified way.

No I don’t

Every single day, people go to places like Chernobyl, Auschwitz, the 9/11 Memorial, or historic battlefields, take photos, tag their outfits ("fit checks"), and post them to Instagram or TikTok where they earn ad revenue or affiliate commissions. For a huge portion of the internet-native population, this is just normal digital behavior.

You still see her as a royal even if she is non working royal so hold her to the standards as though she is and therfore going to these sites is to offer comfort etc. But she is a private citizen, was not a working royal and therefore for me.I dont need to hold her up to those same standards. I don't call her trips quasi royal tours because they aren't imo.

You must know this is utter rubbish, as others have said.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum has these rules for “influencer” - available on its website:

Digital Creators (Social Media / YouTube)
Online creators need permission to produce content for their channels at the Museum. Due to the comfort of other visitors, filming is not possible during group guided tours, but only with an individual guide. Independent entry into the Museum is not allowed.
The condition for granting permission to produce content in the Museum is to send information to press @ auschwitz.org including: the date of planned visit and an outline of the script or concept of the material. The entire content must be approved by the Museum's Press Office before publication.
Only a Museum representative may speak in the materials about the history of the Auschwitz camp—either narrating the history alone or in an interview format with the author.

The same is true at the 9/11 memorial too - content creators need prior approval to shoot any footage there. They must submit what they want to film and have it considered. Security guards at the site routinely confront anyone casually filming with a a cameraman/tripods etc.

You can’t currently visit Chernobyl at all, it’s in a Conflict Exclusion Zone.

Omg someone has a different opinion! Get over it. You post lots of things I wouldn't post but hey I don't need to be aaying why do you hate her.

I am notndefending her just because I don’t agree with you or others opinions. Doesn't make me a fan or a supporter or anything but someone who just has a different opinion.

"get over it", ?
What a deep and considered response.
Yes. I do realise it's your opinion.
I don't want to say any more about it.

Thanks, @Serenster. That's a really intelligent and detailed response.

I don't understand why you're so desperate to tie yourself into knots and spout nonsense to try and defend it.

Agreed and I would add that you would hope that, on a human level, people would realise how inappropriate it is to be trying to make money on any way, shape or form from these human tragedies. The fact that there has to be a set of rules for influencers would suggest not, but at least there is an attempt at regulating activity. Maybe it is telling that Meghan is unable to be at all sensitive to this issue

Absolutely. Some events and situations really ought not to be opportunities to make money.

I'm sitting here wondering why certain posters dig themselves in and defend their stance to the bitter end. Is there some pride involved, or is it just an inability to say, you know what? I've read all the comments and think I was wrong about this.

Definitely, but leaving the money-making and merching aside, HAM’s even turning up at sites of disaster and tragedy is really questionable.

What on earth do they think they are doing? That’s not a rhetorical question! When the late Queen or KC, or WaC (who went to visit the Southport parents) go to such a place, it’s a partly symbolic gesture to show national recognition, concern and compassion for the victims and the bereaved. The point is that they are going there on behalf of all of us, not as private individuals, to express solidarity on our behalf.

So I ask again, what do HaM think THEY are doing on their tragedy tourism trips? Just who are they representing and what practical support are they offering?

OlympicWomen · Yesterday 20:49

They are indeed tragedy tourists and grief vultures. It's so predatory it's chilling.
What a way to make money

I think this is one of the most repulsive comments I have read on MN. People go to Auschwitz and do merch links from it ? I have NEVER seen anyone doing this at all. This is truly a revolting and disgraceful thing to say. Shame on you.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · Yesterday 20:50

They're a bit like the people who slow down to watch accidents or who stand there filming it on their phones. They seem to have this pathological need to be seen, and it doesn't matter where or what it is.

Unfortunately there are some people who use memorials for selfie opportunities. It got so bad at a Holocaust memorial known for its distinctive columns that a German artist created a whole exhibition shaming the people who do this:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38675835

But it’s not considered normal behaviour by the majority- it’s considered disgusting and disrespectful. Not really a defense for the Sussexes @LipglossAndLies

his file photo taken on August 6, 2010 shows two tourists jumping over the concrete steles of Holocaust Memorial in Berlin.

'Yolocaust': How should you behave at a Holocaust memorial?

A website is juxtaposing selfie-takers at a Holocaust memorial with concentration camp scenes, but is there a right way to behave at such sites?

In your opinion. It isn't mine.

So you think it's fine to merch expensive designer clothing from a visit to children suffering severe body issues? Not to mention plastering photos of these children online?

You don't see anything inappropriate at all???

Wow - that is pretty heartless.

The Sussexes shouldn't stoop to this level, or worse; monetise it.
That really is low.

My grandfather walked into Bergen Belsen in 1945. He wouldn't/couldn't watch the episode of The World at War that dealt with the liberation of the camps.

I'm bowing out of this one because I've been banned once and don't want to be again.

That episode of The World at War is phenomenally powerful. I watched it as a teenager and later a few times with my students. It is utterly devastating and frankly traumatising, as it should be. I will never forget it, but I couldn’t watch it again.
