Kate & The Middletons

I am currently reading Russsll Myers Catherine & William. Enjoying it but one thing that stands out is how the Middletons have never put a foot wrong.
Carole was not from an aristocratic background nor was Michael but they raised their kids not to put a step wrong. Kate also had embarrassing family members (Uncle Gary) but she still invited him to the wedding which was the right thing to do & it nipped the media scandal in the bud & took the wind out of any sails.. Meghan invited none of her extended family or her dad & it caused massive media speculation.
Kate was born for royal life & is a natural. Very proud of our future queen. Her parents did an amazing job.

So it’s not on this one? Then why on earth did it come up? Someone randomly started complaining about women being called solely by their surname?

I am not on all threads at all times. Nor do I have photographic recall. I saw CurlewKate coining the “Cawvids” acronym. Then complaining about Meghan being called “Markle” but haven’t seen anyone call her that here. It was days ago and don’t remember every post, though.

I don’t call Meghan “Markle” nor do I even call her “Meghan Markle” because I don’t talk about her to anyone who doesn’t know who is meant by “Meghan” and almost never talk about her outside of this forum.

I did last month with my Mom and her friend and was wildly surprised to see they find HAM’s antics so outrageous that they’d fit right in here on RFF. We used the name ”Harry and Meghan” then just “Meghan”. Possible someone said “Prince Harry.”

Looks like it! I’m not scared by playground bullies, though!😃

so its a pile on ?? maybe its just posters disagreeing with you.

TheOvertGardener · 03/10/2026 13:11

Oh look it’s a quorum!

Just so you know, I’ve been invited to post by two posters so I am allowed now.

ThrwhelsOntHEbuzgoroundandrund · 03/10/2026 13:12

lol 😂

ThrwhelsOntHEbuzgoroundandrund · 03/10/2026 12:48

But it’s true.

People are having a go for not addressing her as Sussex.

“You know I’m Sussex now.”

Hey, does she want to be called just “Sussex”?

LipglossAndLies · 03/10/2026 13:16

CoffeeCantata · 03/10/2026 11:30

Were you around during the “Where’s Kate?” SM bullying campaign? The stuff on here was awful.

No, I’m sorry I can’t link to anything, firstly because I’m not techie and secondly because I’m struggling with an ancient, slow iPad.

Anyone who’s been on here a while knows exactly how nasty the anti-Catherine posts have been.

🥱 this tired old comment again.

Meanwhile you are here daily.ripping apart Meghan And Harry for your own entertainment,.find it all so amusing don't you. Yet you have the audacity to tell others to look at their own conduct and behaviour. Why not turn the mirror on yourself? Do yo teach you children the same behaviour...sure kids its fun to gossip about other people

ThrwhelsOntHEbuzgoroundandrund · 03/10/2026 13:19

I think it is fair that if some expect others to look at their behaviour then they should look at their own.

Nothing tired about that. 🥱 lol

I can’t get my mind round this sudden outbreak of primness. My goodness- you should have been on this board a year or so ago! Your eyes would have been scorched.

HAM is an acronym. If it’s used as a nickname, it’s a very mild and innocuous one. I would defend it. I would have no real objection either to people callling the Waleses WAC, by the same analogy.

And I say again (and no doubt will be ignored again): I don’t take prim lectures on online conduct from pps who maliciously post dodgy photos of WAC I order to deliberately blacken their reputation. That’s absolutely despicable and you have consistently refused to explain why you did that, despite many pps asking you.

As a pp said - reflect on your own conduct before piling on others.

Are you okay with the AI generated images of H&M on the PR disasters thread that are often posted up maliciously to poke fun at them and blacken their reputation? Its just I don't recall you ever telling those posters off about their conduct

TheOvertGardener · 03/10/2026 13:20

Jimsaidpeoplearestrange · 28/09/2026 09:40

are you asking me? if so I have no clue.

the use of Ham/hamlets /markle is not used with affection, I see posts where Meghan is referred to as Markle. just childish and rude.
but then I have seen Catherine being called princess Catherine(never middleton though)

Was this where the whole “Markle” thing god started?

Who has called her that? I’ve genuinely not seen it in an age. I did see a recent InStyle article repeatedly referring to “Prince William and Kate Middleton.” The author seemed stupid rather than intentionally disrespectful, though.

ThrwhelsOntHEbuzgoroundandrund · 03/10/2026 13:23

No one seemed to have a problem when Thomas Markle was referred to as just ‘Markle’.

I wonder why that was.

Although, in fairness he was mostly referred to as Thomas Markle.

As Meghan is.

Did you ever object to the heinous rumors about William? Think back carefully.

I just don’t see the big deal. I have tons of old childhood friends who married and changed names. Sometimes their old surname pops out. It’s not meant one way or another. Neither is HAM necessarily. I used H&M forever but it’s easier to type HAM. What’s being said about them is what matters.

Unlike some of the names used for the rest of the Royal family, which are never used kindly.

I really think you need to calm down, maybe even lie down.

I don’t think I’m in the habit of “ripping into” anyone, as you so hyperbolically put it. It sounds like the same rage-inflation we see with dear old vitriol and frothing and spitting bile.

I wish to inform you that I’m not in the habit of doing any of these most unsavoury activities, but I am partial to a bit is satire and mockery, in the great British tradition of Gilray, Hogarth, Rowlandson and others…right up to Private Eye and HIGNIFY.

If you have a problem with that the internet may not be for you.

Did you ever object to the heinous rumors about William? Think back carefully.

Those were horrible, and all based on a nasty rumour started for a “joke” by Giles Coren…which, even after he went public and admitted it, the SS would not relinquish.

We all know at least 3 horrible rumours about HAM, but I personally do not believe them and my impression is that very, very few pps on here believe them either. They are not tolerated on MN, and rightly so.

My view of HAM is entirely based on what I have seen them do, and heard from their own lips and not on malicious rumours.

CurlewKate · 03/10/2026 08:59

For the avoidance of doubt-neither. Just pointing out that calling real life children in public life by silly nicknames is-or should be- unacceptable. And calling the DofS Markle is no more acceptable than calling the PofW Middleton.

Your backtracking is staggering @CurlewKate ... You said you were going to start calling the Wales children "the Cawvids" to see it stuck & you were going to call our future queen "Middleton"
You starting backtracking & denying it when you were called out on your nasty, petty actions. Pathetic.

Lots of pots calling kettles black on this thread!

You haven't seen anyone call Meghan by her surname?
Really?

I was trying to discuss pleasantly with you my views on calling women because their surname.
I would hate Kate to be called Middleton. It's rude
As is Markle

“Speaking at a function, Thatcher noted…”
“Accepting her Oscar, Winslet thanked…”
“At the summit in Brussels, Merkel visited…”
“In her seminal work, Woolf wrote…”

These are all perfectly normal, perfectly acceptable references in written English . Finding it rude is a very personal reaction.

simpsonthecat · 03/10/2026 17:08

I can't be bothered to argue with you. It's really boring.

You carry on calling people by their surname if that's your thing
It's not mine. I've never done it and won't start now
