News banner from the Torygraph saying Andrew and Sarah are losing their titles. They will be ‘put into Abeyance’ Andrew also to lose the Order of the Garter. Sarah will be known as Sarah Ferguson, he retains ‘Prince’ as he is the son of HM QE2.

I wonder where this leave his ex wife.

And obvs, the whole "I have decided to give up my titles" is the King allowing him to back out gracefully.

Well, Sarah will have to change her branding. It might damage her status in the USA - don't think it will affect how anyone in the UK views her. She was an embarrassment as a working Royal and she's been an irrelevance since she divorced Andrew.

Indianrollerbird · 17/10/2025 19:14

I will be interested to see if Sarah Ferguson follows suit. I think she’ll cling onto hers for dear life.

Grammarnut · 17/10/2025 19:14

I don't see the point of that. Doesn't it also require an act of Parliament which seems a waste of time?
They are both venal and stupid but it would just be better if they went a long way away and were ignored (like Edward VIII).

dynamiccactus · 17/10/2025 19:14

Now being reported on the Times website too. Took long enough (him losing the titles that is, not the Times reporting it!)

I mean, what happens to her title.

Timeforabitofpeace · 17/10/2025 19:16

I wonder how he manages to continue to fund his lifestyle?

She has been since she got divorced.

Andy likes to refer to her as "the Duchess" when speaking to the sort of people who pay tax.

Incorrect, from the BBC...

His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their daughters will continue to have the title of princess

It is traditionally held by the second son of the monarch, but with all the bad blood between H and the rest of his family, I would think it extremely unlikely that they'd 'upgrade' H&M to a more senior dukedom.

Who on earth would want that title for the foreseeable future?

Grammarnut · 17/10/2025 19:17

From what is being said, Andrew is not losing his title, he just isn't going to use it anymore (which is sensible since it cannot just be removed, the letters patent have to be revoked).

Yes, @Flixon
I was just reading this:

Incorrect for the last half hour, yes 😂

About bloody time.

Earlier in the week, I read an excerpt from Virginia Giuffre's book on the Guardian. The most harrowing thing I've read in a long time. She will never get justice now, and Andrew will likely never face questioning. But any association with him will remain toxic. Cutting ties with him is the right thing to do for the royal family PR. I wonder what took them so long.

I read that too. I find it hard to believe it was all a fiction, especially when a settlement was made.

And Virginia is dead; and all that happens is Prince Andrew gets a slap on the cheek whilst still enjoying his wealth and maintaining his innocence. It sickens me.

Nothing happens to Sarah’s title. She received it upon marriage, she kept it upon divorce (slightly modified and minus HRH status). Only an Act of Parliament can strip her of the title.

Good. Next stop, all evidence of financial wrongdoing to the CPS.

And risk more coming out which may involve other members of the family?

I really don't think so ... putting titles "in abeyance" can be made to look like "doing something" and doesn't cost anything except to Andrew, but other options very well might

violetpink · 17/10/2025 19:19

A and S need to move out of that enormous house. Not necessary at all.

AmethystAnnotation · 17/10/2025 19:19

Peaknique · 17/10/2025 19:15

I mean, what happens to her title.

She loses it - she only ever held it by virtue of formerly being married to Andrew, so if his title goes, she automatically loses hers too.

She'd also have lost it had she remarried, but divorced wives keep their husband's title while they remain unmarried - compare Diana, Princess of Wales.

As Sarah held no title in her own right, she will go back to being Sarah Ferguson, with whatever honorific she chooses from Miss, Ms or Mrs.

She would have to be really hard faced to continue to use it now! The reports are saying she will be known as Sarah Ferguson from now on.

Don't think so. She lost her HRH on divorce, but has (correctly) been Sarah, Duchess of York since the divorce. Just as, if I got divorced from Mr Andrew Jones, I would still be Mrs Cynic17 Jones (until I remarried, or actively chose to change my name).

He’s surrendering them ‘voluntarily’ so no. Bet he went down kicking and screaming! Wonder if he’ll finally move out of Royal Lodge too?

Well done Charles. This was long overdue. I think they know there are more revelations and he’s jumped at the 11th hour.

I suspect you don't want to know - or rather you might, but probably wouldn't like the answer Wink
