The royal family

Is there another couple in the world like The Sussexes?

I was musing last night about this aspect - they had the world at their feet. Despite what Sussex Supporters like to suggest most people in the UK nodded their heads " yes it was lovely Harry was getting married finally" . I had never heard of the bride myself as I don't watch American tv shows of that ilk. She was black or biracial? It didn't even enter my head what colour she was initially and then as coverage started it didn't make one iota of difference one way or the other. I recall the day of the wedding - it was sunny and the pubs were full of royal cheer broadcasting the wedding.

And then it all started to where we are today.

Are there any other couples in the world who have gone through such a downfall? Is this a feature of the social media arena today?
We see P Diddy and Blake Lively and others exposed now through SM.
You can't count the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in this category as they were always unpopular.

Can you think of any examples of people who have fallen so spectacularly?

I know people say " they live in California, they have money blah blah" but their reputation is one that most people would not want.

Is it purely because of their seeming complaining and sense of entitlement ? I mean you don't see the real philanthropists in this way - in fact you rarely hear about them and what they do.

Prince Andrew and Fergie, not an exact copy but there are obviously some strong similarities. The spoilt second sons. PA was adored when he was in the forces as was Harry, there was a massive downturn in popularity for both couples after various ventures. Hopefully Harry won’t end up going the way of Prince Andrew!

There on the stair

Right there
A little mouse with clogs on

StartupRepair · 23/01/2025 21:07

I think it is their constant grandiosity and the yawning gap between their version of themselves and the reality revealed by their words and actions.
I can't think of another couple with such a huge platform and so little to offer. It is fascinating.

Going clip clippety clop on the stair

Relies on his wife to earn income.

In the event of a UK return I think that ship may have sailed.

Palace attic ahoy 💀

Ren and Stimpy: an emotionally unstable and psychotic dog, and a good-natured and dimwitted cat, in a constant existential crisis.

JSMill · 23/01/2025 21:39

What fascinates me is how quickly they threw everything away. They didn't even have a plan. I wonder if they regret it.

SooooHungry · 23/01/2025 21:45

Well, I don't think anyone else can be like them because harry is a royal and he and his wife have completely sold the royal family secrets. They've bad mouthed their family, the queen, then the king and the future king, to the world.

Even Fergie and Andrew have never taken the piss out of the queen or trashed the royal family publicly in quite the same way.

I think Harry will one day

SooooHungry · 23/01/2025 21:57

I think as well - I don't know of a less self aware, more narcissistic couple! There is something extremely* *frustrating about a pair of intellectually challenged narcissists with zero self awareness telling the public how self aware, kind, empathic and not narcissistic they are! and telling the public to do one thing while they do another.

Once you remember the ceaseless good works the couple have done, the charities they’ve set up, Harry’s crusading for truth and justice, the humble way they live their lives, and the miraculous and supernatural messages that Meghan hears, it has to be…

Mary and Joseph.

Joseph might have been pretty good on that podcast idea that Spotify floated where something different was mended every week.

EsmaCannonball · 23/01/2025 23:04

Every so often there's a television personality who builds their career on the BBC. Their programmes are wildly popular and they themselves are headed towards national treasure status. Then they go for the money and announce they are signing a golden handcuffs deal with ITV. But the new shows are too downmarket and commercialised, the audience doesn't follow the star across to the new channel, and their career will never reach the old heights again.

Harry and Meghan are basically the Simon Dee/Adrian Chiles/Jonathan Ross of royalty.

She was black or biracial? It didn't even enter my head what colour she was initially and then as coverage started it didn't make one iota of difference one way or the other.

Well clearly her skin colour is an issue otherwise you wouldn't have commented.

How on earth can you mention PDiddy & Harry as being in any way similar?

Why are you even thinking about them? I don't understand the obsession with.

Have you not heard of Andrew being mates with Epstein?

jeffgoldblum · 23/01/2025 23:39

Rumours abound about h and m too ! But it's not something polite people talk about.

I mention it because it is the number one reason that they trotted out about the British RF being racist ! Simple.

You obviously haven't understood what I posted. I didn't say Harry was anything like P Diddy. I referred to SM as being used as an attack on people and spreading things. Read again.

Twitter, tattle etc., rumour mongers. Some people are vicious.

BemusedAmerican · 24/01/2025 03:27

How about Antony and Cleopatra? Derivative versions, of course.

Orangeandgold · 24/01/2025 05:22

I do wonder why people obsess over them. If they are so annoying, give them less air time.

Their relationship has highlighted some realities that people from other races face - that many hate to admit or because ignorance is bliss, are fortunate enough to not have to experience it (to the point people can say it doesn’t exist).

I do wish they whined less - but all public figures arnt perfect. I can’t tell if their PR team is doing an amazing job making them this act whereby all they have to do is breath and everyone has an uproar (bad press still good press idea) - or if they are just unfiltered and maybe should consider a PR team.

I don’t know any other couple like them. But they might be in our great great great grandkids history books.

CaraCameleon · 24/01/2025 06:14

They bring out the worst in each other. They are each others nemesis I think.
So much for the stars being aligned.

most people in the UK nodded their heads " yes it was lovely Harry was getting married finally"

They did.

But back then most people in the UK weren't aware of the extensive spin employed by the palace to place Harold as a naughty but nice golden hearted cheeky chap in the minds of the public who pay their upkeep and won't tolerate a royal fuckmuppet.

He's managed to dispel all that expensive good work all by himself and while Rachel has made her own (albeit very entertaining) faux pas, IMO she's the lesser partner purely because she'd never have achieved this level of notoriety or approbium on her own account.

I agree.

Of course there are people who believe every article written in the tabloids about them, believe every quote from "sources". But I believe that a substantial majority of those who are not their greatest fans would reference the statement on Sussex Royal when they left, the Oprah interview, Spare and the attendant publicity campaign and The Cut article. These are not spin or fabrication, they are the couple in their own words and they don't come across well to me.
