Oh that's interesting. I think this, too, but I was beginning to wonder if I'd just made it up.
It's a notion that's completely disappeared.

Yes. Absolutely bring back the compulsory blue rinse for the over-40s, preferably on hair that’s been set to look rather like a cauliflower.

Which isn't even slightly the view I expressed.

Nope. It's just a preference. I'm not claiming any logic or rationality. I just think she looks a bit silly.

Out if interest why does it look “silly” Jane Seymour (sticking with the royal theme) is 73 in this picture and for the life of me I can’t think why someone would think she looked silly, let alone Catherine who is 30 years younger.

I don’t see that long hair is any more or less silly than short hai, regardless of whether it has a blue tinge. Why is long hair ‘a bit silly’?

LilyBartsHatShop · 10/11/2024 01:17

I don't mind at all women of any age dressing up in a way that looks and feels lovely to them.
It's more of an automatic thing, if someone around my age or older has a long hairdo (including Jane Seymour in that pic) it looks like they're harking back to when they were in their 20s.
Also, there was no compulsion to rinse one's hair blue, back in the day. Women wanted their hair rinsed and set because they thought it made them look lovely, like Marilyn Monroe.

MrsCatE · 10/11/2024 03:21

OMG this woman can't win re horrible comments. Forget royal by default, she's a mother who's successfully (we hope) fought cancer. I'm not a royalist by any means but she would have been advised to wear lots of 'Glam' given the amount attention she'd get plus HD cameras.

SharpOpalNewt · 10/11/2024 03:36

I loved the singing, it made me get something in my eye and I'm usually fairly unmoved by hymns. It seemed genuinely emotional and heartfelt.

SharpOpalNewt · 10/11/2024 03:42

I'm 49 and love having long hair, it's the longest it has been in 15 years and in great condition after I stopped lightening it, and found I was nowhere near as grey as I thought I was. My hair is thick and wavy and it's so much easier than short, unless it was boy short. Anything in between close cropped and long needs a lot of styling and is high maintenance for me.

Lifestooshort71 · 10/11/2024 06:50

I like that she took pleasure in glamming up - it took me over a year after cancer treatment to work up the energy or enthusiasm to even want to look in a mirror. As an aside, unless shot from an odd angle, was there an empty chair (for Camilla) next to Charles? He could have moved over, letting Anne sit next to her husband for once.

It just looks a bit silly to me. Not to you, it's just an opinion. I just associate really long hair with children. I felt I started to look a bit silly after about 25 with long hair!

I'm obviously out of step. That's ok, I'm happy being so.

Thedom · 10/11/2024 07:34

Lovely to see Catherine at the event and she looks gorgeous.

William needs to take Charlottes' advice and get rid of the beard , grow it back next summer, it looked great when he was tanned, now not so much,

mythbuster88 · 10/11/2024 07:40

The make-up is less glam and more drag.

ThePoshUns · 10/11/2024 07:45

Some great examples of misogyny here. Keep it up ladies 🙄

daisychain01 · 10/11/2024 07:47

Bixterret · 09/11/2024 21:24

I don't like her look tonight, heavy makeup and hair unnatural. What was she thinking?

You do realise that Kate is still recovering from cancer treatment and may need more makeup if her complexion is still very pallid? Have a heart!

Yes, unbelievable. It really shows people up for who they really are with some of these crass comments. Glad I don't know them in RL.

Pure jealousy is my guess. Both Kate and Jane are beautiful and seem to be happy in their skin. Shame people can't celebrate that, instead of ripping them to shreds for their hair choices,

I hardly think saying "I think it looks a bit silly" is ripping anyone to shreds. So much drama.

mitogoshigg · 10/11/2024 08:05

I suspect that her hairdresser and makeup artist (might be same person) were trying to ensure she didn't look washed out on screen but it did look like heavy makeup. Personally I'm a fan of natural beauty but so what, as long as she liked it. Her hair looked amazing, whether it's all natural or extensions I don't know, my hair is so thin without having had chemotherapy, I'm always wondering how women have such thick hair (in the USA hair extensions are really common even with ordinary people)

Spectre8 · 10/11/2024 08:49

We could all have hair like that through extensions etc. So nothing to be envious or jealous about.

Maybe the word “silly” associated with being “older” is what people are reacting against. I entirely agree that there are some women whose long hair looks wrong on them, but that has nothing to do with age, it just doesn’t suit them. Other women look amazing. You have made a bit of a sweeping generalisation so posters will react and find examples to disprove it I suppose 🤷‍♀️

I’m almost 60. My hair is past my shoulders. My friends similar age mostly have longer hair. Personally I find short hair aging.

Fair enough.

LilyBartsHatShop · 10/11/2024 09:34

Short hair on older women probably is ageing now, because of the norm in the previous generation that you cut your hair once you reach middle age.
I was just relieved to read @DappledThings post because I was beginning to think I'd made up that "long hair is for young people" convention in my own head and it never actually existed.
The Princess of Wales looks lovely, but I did think, oh, young person's hair, when I saw the photo.
