Hear me out , I have no problem with Camilla and never thought I would never see her as ( way back when ) as Charles wife when they married , my opinion, was they married and can rightly call herself as Duchess.
However , what I don't understand that when Queen Elizabeth was alive , her husband , Prince Phillip was always known as just that and never seen / addressed as King . Why is Camilla our queen when Phillip was never our king ? I'm confused .

No she's still not Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 19:01

I believe Military Nurses are still called "Queen Alexandra Nurses" as Alexandra was Queen when they were set up.
(any military folks here that can say if that's correct)

ednclouda · 09/11/2024 19:01

No she will never be my queen

She is Catherine Princess of Wales

to be Prince or Princess X you have to be born to it. Prince Philip and Prince Albert were both born Princes it wasn’t a title bestow on them by marriage

Yes, Philip was born a prince and then became DoE. In 1957, he also became a British prince and I think Elizabeth gave him that after he did a tour

crumblingschools · 09/11/2024 19:06

I still think of all the Royals in their old roles, so have to think about it when a role is mentioned eg Queen, PoW, DofE

GetrudeCoppard · 09/11/2024 19:07

She’s queen, just as all queen consorts have been before her and for as long as her husband is alive. Kate will be known as queen too if and when it comes to William being king.

Diana being known as Princess Diana was strictly incorrect, but it stuck.

MrJeremyFisher · 09/11/2024 19:08

It does seem strange to hear Camilla referred to as "the queen". As others have said, when I hear it I think QE not Camilla. I suppose it's partly because for most of our lifetimes we've only ever known one queen. Maybe we'll get used to it. Then we'll have to get used to Kate being called "the queen". I've not got used to her being called POW yet, when I hear that I still think Diana.

Yes she's Queen Camilla.
The same as the Queen Mother was Queen Elizabeth when her husband was King (if she hadn't had the same name as her daughter she would have been Dowager Queen Elizabeth after the King died - I think).
Before her we had Queen Mary and before her Queen Alexandra.
There is a photograph from King George VI's funeral I have seen sometimes being called "The Three Queens".
Queen Mary (his mother), Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother (his wife) and Queen Elizabeth II (his daughter).
2 were Queen Consorts and 1 Queen Regent.

Yes but when each of those Queen Consorts had their husband alive and King, they were called 'the Queen'. They became 'Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary' etc when they became the Queen Dowager.

See here for a newspaper article for example.

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 19:16

@AgathaChristmas yes.... isn't that what I was saying ?
They were all 'The Queen" as they were married to The King.

Morven7 · 09/11/2024 19:19

Nope, just see her as a woman in the public eye. I don't believe in Queens and Princesses tho as it's 2024 and I'm an adult, maybe ok in Disney movies I guess.

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 18:40

@upinaballoon She's Princess Katherine of Wales because she's married to Prince William of Wales.
Camilla is Queen Camilla because she's married to King Charles.
They both have their titles through marriage.
Queen Camilla is her title.
Edit : Actually yes - I think technically She's Princess William of Wales (Like Princess Michael of Kent wasn't named Michael)

Edited

Nope. She's the princess of wales. Not princess Catherine or even as another poster suggested Catherine, Princess of Wales.

She is just THE Princess of Wales.

Silvers11 · 09/11/2024 19:20

Queen Elizabeth was Queen almost a year before I was born, so automatically I think of her first, when I hear 'the Queen' mentioned on TV/Radio etc. But I will get used to thinking 'Camilla' first eventually. I do similar when 'The Prince of Wales' is spoken about - or 'The Duke of Edinburgh'!!! It's just habit!!!

AgathaChristmas · 09/11/2024 19:20

Sorry I must have misunderstood. I thought you meant that the (present) Queen should be called Queen Camilla rather then 'the Queen' because queens before her were called 'Queen Mary' etc rather than 'the Queen' when they were the Queen consort of the current King.

I was pointing out that, although I also still hear 'the Queen' and think of QEII, queens consort are always 'the Queen' rather than 'Queen name' until their husband dies.

As a side note, my gran was 40 in 1952 and despite living over another 50 years, the tune was always 'God save the King' to her!

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 19:29

@AgathaChristmas yes they (Camilla, Alexandra, Mary) are/were "The Queen" but also called Queen Camilla (Alexandra/Mary) when required.
(I think 🤔)

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 19:31

@herecomesautumn yes I was wrong about "Princess Catherine".
Surely her full title is Princess William of Wales?

OutrageousImmoral · 09/11/2024 19:32

No

Clingfilm · 09/11/2024 19:35

I know she is but it always jars when I hear it on the news, I have the 'uh, but the queen is dead?' split second.
I keep calling the monarch Prince King Charles though, not sure when it'll eventually click 🤣

ChangingChangingMe · 09/11/2024 19:38

I did have to do a quick brain reset when I read the “Queen to miss remembrance events” headline. But that’s just habit, of course she’s the Queen!

Honestly I think QE2 was Queen for so long that a lot of people didn’t really appreciate that we have a monarchy, not a single person. Doesn’t matter whether she’s “your queen”, or whether you think it’s silly that King is higher than Queen. It’s a monarchy, the peasantry don’t get a view!

He's not Prince William of Wales anymore though so, no

That's what he was known as when he was the son of POW - and before he was made Duke of Cambridge

I’ve mostly got used to Charles as king but I still struggle with the National Anthem and sing “God save the Quing” quite frequently 😆

Sii · 09/11/2024 19:42

I dont think if her as Queen, just as I dont think of Charles of King. Whenever I think of the King/Queen I still think of Elizabeth and then have to remind myself she is no longer alive

LuluBlakey1 · 09/11/2024 19:44

She is not The Queen in terms of the monarch. She is Queen because she is married (the consort) to The King- just as The Queen Mother was Queen Elizabeth (no number after it) because her husband was King George VI. She is the consort to King Charles III. As such a woman has the title Queen and a man has the title Prince.
So I don't think of her as The Queen but she is Queen. It is no different to Catharine becoming Princess of Wales because Prince William is now Prince of Wales. She is not a princess in her own right, she has the title because of his title. She should not be referred to as Princess Catharine but as the Princess of Wales. Prince William is a prince by birth, Beatrice is a princess by birth and referred to as Princess Beatrice. When William becomes King, Catharine will become Queen Catharine but won't be the monarch,

SplendidUtterly · 09/11/2024 19:45

Nope.

Figsonit · 09/11/2024 19:46

No, she's just Camilla.
