Hear me out , I have no problem with Camilla and never thought I would never see her as ( way back when ) as Charles wife when they married , my opinion, was they married and can rightly call herself as Duchess.
However , what I don't understand that when Queen Elizabeth was alive , her husband , Prince Phillip was always known as just that and never seen / addressed as King . Why is Camilla our queen when Phillip was never our king ? I'm confused .

I'm guessing the 'misthinking' is something that will change over time. Just like Duke of Edinburgh still brings Philip to mind rather than Edward.
King is a new title for the vast majority of the population so he's not mistaken for anyone

I'll never think of her as the Queen! I pledged my life to one Queen and it wasn't her.

She doesn't even fit in the "heirs and successors" line of my pledge so 🤷🏼‍♀️.

you pledged your life to a bunch of billionaire freeloaders??!!
Can I ask in what way and more importantly, why?

No, had the headline pop up about the Queen having a chest infection and my immediate thought was that it was a glitch as the Queen had already died.

I didn't think it was a glitch - but I still think first of ER II when anyone talks about the Queen, simply because she'd been queen all my life until 2022. Takes a bit of getting used to!

My DMum (in her late 90s) is more readily accustomed to it, because she has been alive during the reigns of 5 monarchs so is a bit more used to the changes in who's who.

I still want to punctuate Christmas Day with the Queen's Speech - even 2+ years on, the idea of a king is still not automatic

Needmorelego · 09/11/2024 17:58

Yes she's Queen Camilla.
The same as the Queen Mother was Queen Elizabeth when her husband was King (if she hadn't had the same name as her daughter she would have been Dowager Queen Elizabeth after the King died - I think).
Before her we had Queen Mary and before her Queen Alexandra.
There is a photograph from King George VI's funeral I have seen sometimes being called "The Three Queens".
Queen Mary (his mother), Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother (his wife) and Queen Elizabeth II (his daughter).
2 were Queen Consorts and 1 Queen Regent.

Babadookinthewardrobe · 09/11/2024 17:58

No, not at all

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 09/11/2024 17:59

@FilthyRich I think it was Dara O'Briain who said "to give him his full title, King Prince Charles" and now I can't think of him as anything else 🤣

AyrshireTryer · 09/11/2024 18:00

No.
I think of Elizabeth as Queen and get confused when she is called Queen.
The sooner they all disappear the better.

FuckMeUpFlorida · 09/11/2024 18:01

It jarred this afternoon when I received the BBC news alert about "The Queen will miss tomorrow's remembrance service".

For a moment I forgot QEII had passed and was confused.

The Consort bit has been quietly dropped, I think.

LadyKenya · 09/11/2024 18:02

No.

ElvisNow · 09/11/2024 18:02

Camilla should never have been made Queen after our Monarch Queen Elizabeth II -HM recommended The Role Of Cosort and I think that was about right

Comedycook · 09/11/2024 18:02

Every time I hear them say "the queen" on the radio or TV I assume they're talking about QE2....then I suddenly realise they mean Camilla.

Fireworknight · 09/11/2024 18:03

I now think her as ‘a’ queen, but not ‘The’ Queen, which will always be Queen Elizabeth II

Stretchedresources · 09/11/2024 18:03

Yes. My brain has swapped over now.

AgileGreenSeal · 09/11/2024 18:03

They are / were both married to the Sovereign.

Camilla can be called Queen because a queen is subordinate to a king.

Philip could not be called a king, since he could never outrank his wife. He therefore had to have a lower title.

Rainbow321 · 09/11/2024 18:03

I'm glad I'm not the only one , as another poster suggested perhaps given time the ' queen ' title will bring up Camilla as the image my imagination sees.
And thanks for the explanation .

It's never been used for any of the many Queen consort throughout history! It's a term that differentiates Queens by marriage as opposed to reigning Sovereign. Nothing different about Camilla's title or usage whatsoever

Petrine · 09/11/2024 18:04

Yes, I do think of her as the Queen… as of course she is. It did take a while to adjust to not thinking of Queen Elizabeth though.

LaMarschallin · 09/11/2024 18:04

Good because that's what Camilla is and was always going to be.
Same as Diana would have been and Kate will be.

She was always going to be Queen. Consort is the position/role, and Queen has always been the title of the woman that holds that position. HM QEII made that 'request' to smooth the way, that's all.

CrushingOnRubies · 09/11/2024 18:07

Yes but I'm still getting used to the idea that the queen in Camilla

Similarly, the news was talking about the Prince of Wales and I thought they they were talking about Charles not William.

TidyDancer · 09/11/2024 18:07

No not at all. If I see her on tv/news/etc then I think 'Camilla' not 'the queen'. I don't dislike her (quite the contrary tbh) and I like the causes she takes up but she isn't the queen in my mind, she's just married to the man who happens to be king.

You also have misunderstood the word consort! Camilla could never have been any other sort of queen .
Every queen consort including Camilla has been referred to as The Queen.

Kingofthetyrantlizards · 09/11/2024 18:10

No, I know she IS a Queen, and I've no objection to that. But my brain hasn't switched, so to me The Queen is still QEII, and I have to remind myself every time.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 09/11/2024 18:11

I don't although I do realise she is the queen. Probably because the press have always called her 'Camilla' and still continue to do so. I can't imagine them calling Queen Elizabeth just Elizabeth.

At least they have stopped referring to the Princess of Wales as Kate Middleton. It only took them about 7 years after the marriage to Prince William to stop using her maiden name.

BG2015 · 09/11/2024 18:11

No, I initially think of Queen Elizabeth when I see anything current regarding the Queen....then I remember.
