Meghans trademark not allowed

The patent office apparently has turned down the trademark of Meghans new jam making business American Riviera Orchard on the grounds that you can't trademark geographical locations. You would have thought somebody would have picked up on this before now.

That’s what I wonder? Surely if some time has passed and you were say a cleaner there you could spill the beans. What’s the worst that could happen?

Worst case scenario: you get sued, lose, are bankrupted and (if you’re a professional, like say someone senior in Archewell) find it difficult to get work elsewhere.

NDAs are pernicious though, as employers often use the to cover up truly poor activity - for example assault/sexual harassment/bullying etc. The courts and regulators aren’t fond of them for this reason, but that doesn’t mean the courts wouldn’t enforce them.

(If you have signed an NDA you are far safer to take advantage of whistleblower protections and remain anonymous so far as possible).

I read on X / Twitter that this bookstore has a $200 pm membership.

No idea if that means the house polloi are not allowed to enter and buy a book or what. You'd have to read a lot of books to justify a $200 monthly surcharge.

Maybe there's a VIP area for reading and networking. 🤷‍♀️

I've checked their site. $200 per month correct. There is a VIP area, a newsletter, 15% off everything you buy, something called a "holiday book concierge" (dunno either, is that someone who picks out stuff for you?) and various "events" every month. Oh and food truck discounts.

If I was paying that much for those services, I'd basically take up residence.

(sorry @ShamedBySiri , crossed there!)

ShamedBySiri · 13/09/2024 15:56

Take a look at their mission statement @Uricon2

It could almost have been written by MM herself.

Word salad, woo and a global dream. Confused

BunnyLake · 13/09/2024 15:57

Godmothers seems a terrible name for a book shop to me.

It’s obviously only accessible to people with money. No ordinary person is going to pay $200 a month to join a bookshop.

ShamedBySiri · 13/09/2024 16:01

I think ordinary people can shop there. But there's socials for the members. Perhaps little Archie and Lilibet will be allowed out of purdah to amaze everyone with their precocious reading at a storytelling.

I'm not sure I'd want my magic seed watered by my godmother - lovely though she is. Tbh, I'm not even sure where my magic seed is Confused

Yes @thecrossIambearing . I find the quasi religious language about souls evolving, sacred pauses and a flipping bookshop being a cathedral particularly nauseating.

You're flogging paperbacks not taking the veil FGS.

The way they were all dressed in white was a weird too, especially Oprah's about to be baptised in the river outfit.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/09/2024 16:07

Just had a look at Godmothers website. There’s a book that caught my eye. Godmothers is selling it for $25. I’ve just bought it on Amazon for £11.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 13/09/2024 16:11

No ordinary person is going to pay $200 a month to join a bookshop.

Membership of the British Library is £95 per year. Members' room and bar, free access to events and exhibitions, discount in the shop. And somewhat more prestigious.

BunnyLake · 13/09/2024 15:24

She looks ridiculous with her mimes while telling this tedious story.

The only time in recent years I’ve been glad to see Oprah. 😁

Drama school improve, cos playing Julia Roberts in Notting Hill, the poor famous lady finding refuge in a bookshop.

I wonder if it's the long suffering Doria who's had enough?

Thought this coverage was bizarre about MM dashing out of the bookstore event early because she had to cook her kids tea on a Sunday evening? All v odd - I though she might be avoiding OW.

“For me, sneaking to New York five years ago was a really big deal,” she told the crowd assembled, describing how she put on a cap and kept her head down. “I was still so uncomfortable being out in the world. The safety of what I was craving, I knew I could find in a bookstore.”

😁either she was misquoted, or she's once again mangled the English language. "The safety of what I was craving", indeed.

@upinaballoon Grin

Here it is $200 pm membership or $350 family bargain----

I think commoners can shop there but the "circle" offers exclusive events/socials etc.
The chance to rub shoulders with OW and MM. (Not PH obv as he doesn't read books)

MLM cult 101. There will be a load of therapeutic/healing/life coaching sessions you'll be encouraged to bring your friends to. NXIUM left a void in where to go if you are rich and directionless.

I thought the firm had confiscated her passport. Isn't that what she told Oprah? How did she fly to NY?

Her passport, driving licence and car keys were all taken . Allegedly. How she managed to get to her baby shower , the US tennis , Elton’s pad , the Clooneys’ pad is baffling !

thenightsky · 13/09/2024 16:43

The safety of what I was craving

That reminds me of the old school comedian, Ernie Wise, talking about 'the play what I wrote'.

MalagaNights · 13/09/2024 16:44

“We created a place where people can connect, elevate and heal through the power of storytelling and ideas,” Jennifer Rudolph Walsh tells THR following the opening in Santa Barbara County."

“It’s really been stirring to the soul,” Walsh tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Victoria and I truly made manifest exactly what we dreamed of. Godmothers is a cathedral to us. It’s a home.”

God it's the wankiest most elitist most embarrassing nonsense ever.
Millionaires self actualising whilst congratulating themselves and making more money.

I thought she was going to live a life of 'service'. You couldn't get more self absorbed and privileged if you tried.

I couldn't bear to listen to that or be around those people for 5 minutes.

I note they sell George Orwell. I hope he haunts the shop and rewrites the mission statement.

ETA He could have a go at H and M's speeches too.

Uricon2 · 13/09/2024 16:49

There is a difference between loving language and loving the sound of your own bloviating voice and H, M and seemingly their new mates fall very much in the second camp.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 13/09/2024 17:13

That reminds me of the old school comedian, Ernie Wise, talking about 'the play what I wrote'.

I'll take Eric and Ernie over these two any day. They made people laugh. And they were genuinely loved. If I want to cheer myself up, I go on YT and watch them doing Bring me Sunshine.

thecrossIambearing · 13/09/2024 17:13

That lizard tongue came out for a second with a change of face when Oprah came in.

I love the idea of a literary poltergeist (do poltergeists have to just do stuff like slamming doors and chucking vases?).

If I ever learnt how to do hacking this is what I'd do. Hack websites and rewrite mission statements / publicity statements and stuff.

I do feel a bit bad confining the shade of George to that bookshop even hypothetically, but he could do so, so much good😈
