Kensington Palace have released a new photo of William and the children to mark his 42nd birthday. The photo was taken by Catherine.

Honestly I think this is one of my favourite photos of the family!

I really hate it, I bet it took ages, many repeated takes, and the children being ordered to look joyous when they were thoroughly fed up. It just screams "forced and fake" to me. The children would probably have rather been playing in the sand

Really? Mine would be happier doing this than just playing in the sand. They'd have my OH running up and down, trying to jump higher and go further each time, turning it into a game. They'd keep going long after their dad gave up and collapsed beside me in a heap.

I think Louis' slight look of apprehension mingled with excitement shows this is neither fake nor forced.

@BigWillyLittleTodger it was a joke on Harry Enfield's The Windsors that Charles had an illegitimate son whose mum was one of the 3 degrees "the one on the left"

Thank you for this. I know you weren't replying to me. I can remember he - PC - was keen on one of the groups but I couldn't have said which, and I love this joke. I love Harry Enfield, too.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 21/06/2024 17:29

I think it is a particularly delightful picture of George - he often looks very solemn and thoughtful so to see him mid jump with exuberance all over his face is certainly a side we don't often see

i can picture the scene, I think they have run up the dune, jumped over the grass and I can hear William shouting "smile at mummy kids" while Kate sits on a rug with her camera primed to take a picture and a cup of coffee in a thermos.

It's a fantastic photo and looks like a similar beach to the Fathers Day photo was taken - lovely golden sand and marram grass. The PoW is clearly a very competent photographer and has a great eye for composition. It shows a lovely family having a great day. I wouldn't say it was photoshopped at all, I imagine Catherine would be lying on her tum on the beach - the look on Louis' face suggests there might have been a bit of a drop!

I thought Louis looked a bit dubious!

MugPlate · 21/06/2024 17:36

Genuine question:

Why are Charlotte’s shorts shorter than the boys?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 21/06/2024 17:37

Many years from now someone will write a PhD on Royal Social Media Semiotics documenting how the royals started to embrace all the current fashions in visual communication, snapping pictures with the people portrayed facing towards the view rather than the photographer - and jumping altogether in the air in a pose often adopted by schoolchildren waving their exam results.

Things will have moved on and it will be life-size 3D holograms of the royals by then. Instagram will be old hat.

I can't keep up with progress even now. I am a little wistful for reality, real reality ... and ribbon-cutting.

Yes. To me Louis looks like they got the photo first take because he seems a bit like he isn’t sure what’s going to happen and only “took off” because William and George had a hand each…

Beacuse generally girls’ clothes are cut shorter and tighter than boys in pretty much all shops. AKA institutionalised misogyny.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 21/06/2024 17:59

I thought charlottes looked looser, lighter and probably more comfortable for running and jumping around !

Totally disagree.

Genuine question:

Genuine answer:
Because they're not as long.

ArcaneWireless · 21/06/2024 18:08

Well quite isolde

Best to keep it simple for them.

🤣🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Madness isn't it? Just when you think the comments can get anymore ridiculous.

PracticallyYesterday · 21/06/2024 18:20

I have to say it's a vast improvement on the Fathers' Day photo, at least.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/06/2024 16:59

I really hate it

Sit down for this if you aren't already, because it might come as a bit of a surprise; but it wasn't taken with your approval in mind and nobody cares anyway.

Mind blowing, huh?

And if you really hate an innocuous family pic I dread to think of the mental energy you expend every day. You should read some Marcus Aurelius and get some perspective. Or a fucking grip.

Well said. What is wrong with people

headstone · 21/06/2024 18:24

I don’t like it either, it looks like an advert for a Haven holiday.

Jealousy?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/06/2024 18:28

Calliopespa · 21/06/2024 18:26

Jealousy?

Sourness, small-mindedness, anger that not everyone's as miserable as them, nit-pickingly critical, failing to see joy and happiness in anything...take your pick really. And thank your lucky stars you don't live or work with them.

Love it too, to me it's joyous and my favourite photo of the children

No really, as it contains 2 future Kings.
