Part 6 of positive threads, delving into all things Meghan and Harry. Whether it’s the causes they support, their business initiatives, or Meghan’s fashion choices (Harry’s too, on occasion 😉), there’s plenty to discuss Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend. This is a relatively drama free zone - let’s keep things light! Clinking a glass of lemonade 🥂 to @queentim for the original inspiration.

Meghan did her own makeup and hair for the Nigerian visit and I think after the first day she absolutely nailed her look. I’ve seen a video of her walking in that red dress. Wow. If I can find it again. I’ll post it.

DelectableMe · 20/05/2024 12:12

She did her own hair and makeup?
That's a change of direction because I know that she has travelled with her favoured makeup artist and hairdresser before, so it seems strange to dispense with them.
Her makeup used to be absolutely on point, but I found it heavy this time, but that's partly the eyebrows which I know is fashionable but imo not always flattering.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 20/05/2024 12:28

Meghan in that red dress - it’s in slow Motion in part, so you get a quick, but good, look at how the dress moves with her.

I’ve said it before, but all of the ladies looked brilliant.

That's a shame, he's always done a great job.
It's sometimes difficult to get it right on your own.

skullbabe · 20/05/2024 15:13

weird, heavy, lank quality to it - it's never soft-looking

Meghan has Type 3b or Type 3c hair which she straightens with heat or relaxes. Type 3 hair (or Type 4) does not look like or behave like Type 1 or 2 hair. It is therefore not helpful to call the way someone’s hair just is as weird. Type 1 or 2 hair types have natural slip but that does not extend to whether the hair is soft or not. Many people with Type 3 or 4 hair have stories how people with Type 1 or 2 are actually surprised by how soft their hair is. Additionally hair in people with black ancestry does not naturally produce as much sebum as people of other races and is more fragile - this means that to retain moisture, black people will apply oils to coat the shaft and create a barrier. People are different.

Regardless of how many people try to bring her, her children or her husband down - she's still there. Standing. Existing. Being. Flourishing. And she will continue. No matter how hard they try. And do they try? It's relentless.

Anyway - it's their anniversary today. Many happy returns to them!

Happy belated anniversary to them!

Indeed, what a crazy ride it's been for these two. It must feel like on the one hand, there's their real life in which they're two successful high-profile people, with dozens of philanthropic projects, the hugely successful Invictus initiative, best-selling books, successful TV-shows (Suits and Harry & Meghan), award-winning podcasts, recognition from Women of Vision and Gracie Awards to Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Award etc, and many people who care about them and are invested in their success.

Then on the other hand there is the obsessive, demented, hateful bashing they receive from the British/Murdoch press and their followers, who have made obsessing about and hatin' on them a national sport, at least for some.

It's been slightly frightening to witness the ferocity with which some people attack them. Including women, as Meghan highlighted in her SXSW IWD panel discussion recently. And of course angry middle (late?)-agers of the likes of Clarkson and Morgan.

TallerSally · 20/05/2024 19:37

It even seems Meg-hatred has generated a new genre, which I've sometimes seen referred to as 'black-fishing' - or something similar: basically anonymous people online purporting to be of a particular race while making hateful commentary about another person of that race. The aim being to create the impression that EVERYONE hates this person.

Quite something - eh?

Anyway, I digress. Back to being celebratory!

TallerSally · 20/05/2024 19:44

The latest sighting of Meghan and Harry out and about: date night (allegedly) dinner at a steakhouse with their buddies Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins and his wife, Tracey.

(so funny how all they need to do is show their faces at a restaurant for it to become headline news - they are just such irrelevant Hollywood losers!)

And some awards they've won in recent years:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Awards

Six awards Harry and Meghan have accepted since leaving the monarchy

From human rights recognitions to being proclaimed a "living legend" of aviation, Harry and Meghan have been honored several times.

DelectableMe · 20/05/2024 19:46

Why are they such irrelevant Hollywood losers? They're not in Hollywood, and as much as some would deny it - they're royal through and through! It seems an offensive thing to say.

Hang on - I thought Meghan was vegan? A steakhouse seems a really odd choice.

That should have been in inverted commas!

The M&H hating media were all about how they were “Hollywood losers” at the end of last year, it must have been a comment some random nonentity made about M&H, which the press (and boards including these RF boards) then gleefully pounced upon.

They then wrote days upon days of articles and posts about how M&H were such losers and never achieved anything and just traded on their titles and should have them stripped off and were attention seekers and privacy tour and bla bla bla the usual boring hateful drivel.

My point is, M&H’s reality feels so different, it’s almost as if these obsessively hateful people live in a parallel universe…

DelectableMe · 20/05/2024 21:59

Right, I haven't seen that. I've obviously missed the H&M hating media.

Well I suppose some would say they entered Hollywood by making deals with Netflix and Spotify.

Meghan is not vegan

Spotify is Swedish and Netflix is a worldwide streaming service - decidedly not Hollywood.

Great to hear that the obsessive M&H hating media and social media drumroll isn’t cutting through as well as they no-doubt hope…

In any case we’ve all become pretty good at ignoring the haters… as I’d bet M&H do too!

😆

Princessfluffy · 21/05/2024 08:01

Thanks for the red dress video clip.
Why did Meghan expose so much skin in Nigeria I wonder, was this a feminist agenda of some kind? It was clearly out of step with Nigerian norms.

skullbabe · 21/05/2024 09:02

It was clearly out of step with Nigerian norms.

I suppose we should tell the Nigerian designer that she wore that her style was out of step with the norms in her own country. There has been much discourse in Naija social media about the visit and Meghan’s clothes are not really something that people have been talking about in terms of modesty. That seems to be a primarily non Nigerian talking point. There was a keenness for her to wear more bold colours and maybe wear a gele but no conversations about how much skin she was showing.

@Princessfluffy

The lady who greeted her at the school on day 1 was wearing a beautiful pencil skirt (loved the print) and off the shoulders top. A picture of her is available on page 2 of the ‘Harry and Meghan out and about -Naija edition’ thread:

But also I just googled Lagos street style fashion, fashion week annd also haute couture, As I thought, pretty diverse. Which is what I’d think is the norm for a country of about 240 million people:

Princessfluffy · 21/05/2024 12:28

Oh so not a feminist statement at all then. I'm a bit disappointed by that.

I hope that she had a lot of discussions whilst she was there about the treatment of women in Nigerian society. Over 40% of women there undergo FGM and 30% of brides are children.

Sally, I'm sure that most of those online people really are the race they are claiming to be, and that their purpose is not to show that everyone hates M... because obviously M&H have their legions of fans, everyone knows that.

More likely these "anonymous" people are a little tired of their white friends being accused of racism every time they criticise M's various misdemeanours. So they are daring to say "yeah, I don't like some of this stuff she's been doing either". I have a number of friends who fall into that category - they have African ancestry, yet strangely enough don't approve of all of M's actions.

What they - and I - don't really have time for is people who criticise based on looks or even fashion choices... most would agree that Meghan is beautiful, and very often dresses with flair.

skullbabe · 21/05/2024 13:34

Perhaps you could clarify why you thought her clothing was a feminist statement. What about her clothing choices would be attributable to feminism?

I hope that she had a lot of discussions whilst she was there about the treatment of women in Nigerian society. Over 40% of women there undergo FGM and 30% of brides are children.

They were in Nigeria for 3 days - in those three days they visited a school that Archwell supports with GEANCO and also fund the David Ayelowo Leadership scholarship for girls (especially for girls affected by terrorism), visited with veterans, Meghan participated in a forum to encourage leadership in women, they participated in a sports camp with Giants of Africa to encourage sport participation as a means to improving peoples outcomes and they attended Save the Children to highlight specifically child marriage, FGM and abductions.

Good Lord. If ever there was an expression of “the only thing I care about is Meghan and Harry” it’s that post.

”The lady” you refer to in Nche Onyema, a founding director of the GEANCO foundation, which has done huge amounts of work in Nigeria and other African countries, setting up schools and health clinics among them.

GEANCO partners with the school the Sussexes visited in Abuja, The Lightway Academy, and provides scholarships to young women facing challenges due to domestic terrorism or gender inequality. Archewell had in turned donated some menstrual supplies to GEANCO to distribute to the schools they work with. It’s a shame Harry and Meghan didn’t shine a light on GEANCO’s work really, so one of the Founders didn’t get relegated to “the lady” greeting the (real 🙄) VIPS - but that’s not their way, is it?

It's a shame that the website of the duke and duchess doesn't make any reference to FGM, child brides and the sex trafficking of children. It would have been good to have highlighted these issues and spoken out publicly about them whilst in Nigeria. Bit of a missed opportunity I think.

I did wonder if Meghan was expressing her feminism by wearing revealing outfits in a conservative country in order to set an example to other Nigerian women not to follow conservative dress expectations.
