Part 6 of positive threads, delving into all things Meghan and Harry. Whether it’s the causes they support, their business initiatives, or Meghan’s fashion choices (Harry’s too, on occasion 😉), there’s plenty to discuss Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend. This is a relatively drama free zone - let’s keep things light! Clinking a glass of lemonade 🥂 to @queentim for the original inspiration.

Did Harry and Meghan actually sleep on this trip? I can't believe how much they packed in!

Right? So much packed in!

I'd like to see Meghan in Princess Diana's hairstyle, I think it would really suit her.

skullbabe · 18/05/2024 08:59

It may well do but would be a very difficult hairstyle to maintain with her hair type. She would need daily heat to maintain the lift and bounce that Diana had which would be damaging. I suppose she could wrap her hair at night and style in the mornings but again much more difficult and labour intensive than what she might have now as shorter hairstyles are hard to maintain on textured hair.

OP posts:
LaMarschallin · 18/05/2024 09:25

Which one of Diana's hairstyles though? I think the one she had in the Mario Testino photos might work well but some of the more bouffant ones would overshadow Meghan's delicate features.

skullbabe · 18/05/2024 09:34

Yup even Diana’s hair in the Mario Testino pictures would be difficult (not impossible) to maintain with textured hair.

OP posts:
DelectableMe · 18/05/2024 09:48

Surely it's harder to maintain very long hair such as she has which has been straightened for years? If she had shorter hair, it would still be straightened and shaped and I think would suit her. However, I don't have hair like hers so I've no idea about the levels of maintenance.

TallerSally · 18/05/2024 10:20

I don't normally opine on these things but I think her hair suits her just fine. I agree with skullbabe that shorter textured hair might create some sharp looks, but is definitely more of a pain to maintain - like, daily pain and fuss. And weekly regular trimming and shaping.

Anyway... 😆

DelectableMe · 18/05/2024 10:22

Yes, it would probably be a lot of work to maintain! I also think that long hair is more adaptable eg loose, pinned up, buns etc which can be more practical options, especially if you want to mix it up a bit.

M&H Naijamania made into a little London news outlet!

A Londoner who travelled all the way to Nigeria to join the Women in Leadership panel at which Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the head of the WTO, spoke alongside Meghan and Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudo (she runs a huge entertainment business - more on that later).

https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/lifestyle/royal-exclusive-prince-harry-and-meghan-markles-epic-trip-to-nigeria/

Some (raving, of course!) extracts:

"It’s the story that has broken the internet – and now South London Press Showbiz is delving inside London’s most famous export Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s epic trip to Nigeria.
In a very sweet moment, Meghan and Harry were gifted sensational bespoke teddy bears for their children Archie and Lilibet, designed by talented local teenager Grace from her @graceteddies brand she launched when she was just 5 years old.
Proud South Londoner Stephanie, who now lives in Nigeria gave extraordinary insight into the couple on their visit.
She said: “Wow! What a weekend that was! Flying to Abuja to cover the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit, I truly didn’t know what to expect.
“I was very pleasantly surprised. They are fun, caring, loved up, compassionate, total naturals with a crowd.
Meanwhile young Grace has revealed the inspiration behind her incredible teddy bears.
“When I was five, I moved to Nigeria with my mum. I cried when I saw children begging on the streets and I always knew I wanted to help them in any way I could.
“As I turned nine in November, 2019, I now have a chance to do that with the launch of my foundation and the #GraceTeddies brand, which will give money to support children on the streets for every teddy bear sold.
“Please buy and support @graceteddies and help a street child today by telling everyone about us. Thank you.”

And I didn't know this, but apparently Meghan and Dr Ngozi have known each other for a while. They worked together on vaccine distribution during the pandemic! The article has a link to a piece H&M wrote about Dr Ngozi in Time Magazine in 2021.

Geez, the stuff Meghan and Harry get up to. Most people have no idea!

"On May 11, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, 69, co-hosted a women's leadership panel alongside the Duchess of Sussex, 42, in Abuja. Approximately 50 leading women from various sectors of Nigerian society including politics, business, media, and culture, attended the session, which was moderated by Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu, who heads Africa’s first global black entertainment lifestyle network.
Speaking to PEOPLE at the event, Okonjo-Iweala says: "I said to the Duchess when she was coming that we must have fun. The conversation was wonderful. I think the impression that people had of her is of a very warm, loving person. And you can see the way that the room reacted to her.”
Reflecting on Meghan’s participation, she adds, “Almost everybody in this room had one or two [educational] degrees to their name. You could see how she fit into the room very well. [Meghan’s] an intelligent, thoughtful person.”
During the pandemic, she, Meghan, and Harry forged a friendship. The couple's interest in vaccine distribution to underserved countries and ensuring children's access fostered several Zoom meetings dedicated to this cause.
"They really cared, so we had a number of Zoom meetings to discuss that subject. And then they wrote the piece about me in TIME, which was a surprise. It was lovely of them."

I just discovered today that Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Ex Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard collaborated on a book together. Women in Leadership

Other famous accomplished women, most of them easily recognizable names, contributed to the book. I’ll be at the library next week looking for it.

Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister who gave the Misogyny Speech in Australian parliament. It was directed at the Opposition leader who is a committed misogynist. It was glorious to hear and available on the internet with a quick google. Watching it was even better.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala is a most extraordinarily accomplished person. The accolades this woman has received!

It really seems like Meghan had been quietly forging her own path in the world, with Harry at her side. He really must be so proud of her.

Women and Leadership by Julia Gillard

An inspirational and practical book written by two high-achieving women, sharing the experience and advice of some of our most extraordinary women leaders, in their own words.

I will never forget that smack down Julia Gilliard gave to the leader of the opposition excoriating him for his blatant misogyny- it was a work of art.

*Just watched it again - it was so good.

Thanks so much for the link, @Wickedlywearynamechanged !

Such inspiring women...

Good on Meg for keeping such company. Didn't she interview Julia Gillard for one of her projects?

TallerSally · 18/05/2024 15:52

Thanks @Wickedlywearynamechanged !

So lovely to read about these women standing up for women’s rights.

No wonder some others are so desperate to knock them down. I can only imagine what Julia too had to go through when she was PM.

For my sins I got to chat with her once at an event, I was probably too star-struck to remember anything of substance that she said, but I recall her exuding a calm but steely poise and grace which said “set us back all you want, we’re in this for the long run”

We have such a long way to go still, on advancing women’s and girls rights. One thing I get particularly upset about is gender-based violence (don’t want to derail, but I can’t get the P Diddy video out of my head today…)

😳

Nice! - you got to meet her. Been reading up around Julia's Misogyny Speech. The guardian called it a "Masterful righteous take-down" speech. It was! Apparently the Australian Dictorary later changed the
definition of misogyny from "hatred of women" to "entrenched prejudice against women" - which is more accurate.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 19/05/2024 12:21

I would love to meet and talk with Julia Gillard.

Back to Meghan - it is really good to see her in the room with these powerful women leaders. Nearly all we read about in the tabloids is gossip and mud throwing, designed to punish and humiliate Meghan, and to a lesser extent Harry. She’s survived all of it, plus a social media onslaught that is so intense and extended over such long period, and of such ferocity that’s never been seen before, that I can recall:

skullbabe · 19/05/2024 14:27

Regardless of how many people try to bring her, her children or her husband down - she's still there. Standing. Existing. Being. Flourishing. And she will continue. No matter how hard they try. And do they try? It's relentless.

Anyway - it's their anniversary today. Many happy returns to them!

The then Prince Charles - "tungsten".
Quite a different meaning!

AnnieSF · 20/05/2024 00:49

@GreekDogRescue I have to agree with you. Her hair was bad on the first day in Africa. I'm not sure what had happened but it looked like a piece or extension had gone off piste. I never thought she had worn a weave or wig but it was very odd so not sure if she could take a short cut like Halle Berry has.

Or like most of us we just have a bad hair day every now and again. Or something happened to mess it up a little bit and she doesn't know. My hair can be perfect when I go out but wind or humidity can quickly make it look messy. I don't like to use products lime hairspray to make sure it always stays looking perfect either.

Does your hair always look perfect all the time?

I to would like to see this! It would be hilarious. I think Diana was responsible for the hole in the ozone layer at one time, with the industrial amounts of hairspray she needed for those layered 'dos'.

I know I'm completely out of touch, but I just think young women of today 😂wear their hair too long. If both Meghan and Kate (to name but 2) were to shorten their hair by about 15 cms, they'd look a lot better. That very long length drags the hair down, and I think it finishes at the wrong place on their bodies. There's long hair, and then there's hair that just needs cutting - and that's how this style looks to me.

But is Meghan's hair actually extensions? She's forever fiddling with it (pushing it back, then bringing it forward, then back again etc) when it's loose, but it seems to have a weird, heavy, lank quality to it - it's never soft-looking. Too much product? Styling? Again, I think slightly shorter would be much more flattering (but not a la Diana!!).
