It seems to have gone the same way as their Sussex Royal site. I don't know much about social media or PR, but this all seems pretty odd and ineffectual.

The impact of smoking wasn't widely accepted until the late 1960s. Cigarettes were given in Red Cross parcels.
Was Philip's attitude to Fergie a grudge? Or was he just pissed off at her behaviour?

I mean, that's what a grudge is! Not forgiving someone, and never forgetting.

Smoking was enthusiastically endorsed by the medical profession, as well

No idea if they really ARE doctors rather than hired faces but smoking was definitely pushed as good for you.

Well, if it's justified it's hardly a grudge. He was just pissed off with her I think.

This is true. But the QM lived until 2002, well after smoking was revealed to be a killer.

She and the DoE never forgot a slight.

BemusedAmerican · 07/04/2024 17:52

George VI was also a stress smoker from what I've read. Being a wartime king was stressful.

How would you define a grudge, then?!

RandomQues · 07/04/2024 17:54

Finally, re their wedding. Everyone looks so totally miserable, it could have been a wake. Apart from the completely out of kilter arm waving American Southern preacher they imported, for reasons unknown. Only William had some kind of bemused or sardonic smile, at least at some point. (This was before the petty vicious personal attacks on his wife of course that were to follow).

But dumb, arrogant Harry was “mad for it”
so the Meghan show must go on.

I’ve enjoyed getting my thoughts about these two-bit virtue-signalling hustlers off my chest, thank you. An interesting thread. But must bow out now.

Re. The lifestyle/blog thing, one of the things that occurs to me is that if you are advising women on fashion, or see yourself as a fashion icon, you do need to have a fashion sense of your own. Meghan Markle has no fashion sense of her own, possibly because of the lack of personality. That Southpark opening the lid of her brain comes to mind. She just grasps at random, expensive clothes or designer clothes. £50,000 for an engagement interview dress - so oppressed eh? Now she has jettisoned the sexy ripped jeans look, for the I’m so rich, I don’t even have to care about fashion, expensive-beige, it’s even more the case. Now lots of women don’t have any interest in fashion or any fashion sense, in fact, some of my favourite people, but they don’t go round telling other women what to wear either or think they are some kind of fashionista lol !! Her fashion sense has always been about “status” - sexual or financial.

Re. Food. I thought she always maintained that she was never much of a cook. Chicken salad was her mainstay I think she said somewhere. So I don’t know about the “cooking blog” idea as having much traction either.

When she was with the chef she tried to get into all that . Writing about food and wine, giving recipes. I think it was roast chicken she said she was good at later on. She just changes her persona to fit the man/situation she’s in. Complete chameleon.

I saw bits of the wedding an I was completely 😳🤔 at all of the A list stars of America that were there! I figured they all knew the RF, not her ... I think actually quite a few didnt know either side lol 😂
I guess it worked a bit, she got access to Hollywood's elite for a bit, but has clearly fucked that up - haven't they all taken a big step back (Oprah, George C, Posh and Becks, Obama etc?) and I seem to recall there being a mad dash of MM to some sort of lunch there some A listers went that she hadn't been invited to ?!

I did notice Camilla and Catherine seeming have a bit of a giggle when the preacher was going on - and on - and on. I took the opportunity to go to the loo, and he was still going when I got back.

At the time, I thought he must have been asked because M had been a member of his church, or something. But then I also thought she must know all the celebs she invited.

That's true. Similar to that fool Edward VIII then. Betray his country....

Edward/David knew exactly what he was doing.

Harry is more "useful idiot".

Hopefully, by the time the money is getting low and the Chinese ( or whoever) cone offering to pick up the tab, he will be too irrelevant to be a geopolitical player Of any significance for British foreign policy.

That sort of situation has probably already occurred to the palace and the security services. Another reason to keep them at arms' length and not allow them back.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 07/04/2024 17:07

Indeed - it overcame a tantrum and a flounce by an actual King, not that long ago! In quite similar circs.

And Harry's beloved Great Grandmother never forgave them. And never let them back in again.

She held them responsible for the King's premature death. She believed the strain of being king during the war years caused his health problems.

Though there is absolutely no doubt we were much better off with George VI than we would have been with Edward VIII.

I also read a biography once that claimed that the Queen Mother had her sights set on Edward/David but he spurned her, and she bore a grudge for that.

Sounds like a bit of a fantasy from Edward and Wallis who were cheesed off that she got a bit of status and power when they were on a downward trajectory.

I thought everyone looked happy at Harry and Meghan's wedding. I thought it was a joyous day - not what's happened since of course - but it was a happy day, I remember everyone being thrilled for them! I thought it was reported that Doria met Charles and Camilla for tea the night before?

Apols for Daily Express.

Prince Andrew and Fergie got married in Westminster Abbey so I would understand if Harry thought the same would be on offer to him.

Charles and Camilla leave Kensington Palace after seeing Meghan’s mum

PRINCE Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, welcomes Meghan Markle’s mother Doria Ragland for tea in a cosy afternoon at Clarence House with Harry and his bride as the final countdown to the Royal Wedding begins.

OK, not central to the Montecito Vanity Project word salad subject of this thread.

But I just remembered - Harry hates the press and the media, right? He hates people making money from his family and its tragedies. Printing stories that he feels are not true, are made up.

But then he takes millions from - Netflix? The media company that has been trawling his family's history and present for profit? Who made The Crown?!

Prydddan · 07/04/2024 19:29

That sort of situation has probably already occurred to the palace and the security services. Another reason to keep them at arms' length and not allow them back.

Or to reel them back in with a cast-iron promise of ongoing financial security, matched by a cast-iron definition of what they can and cannot say and do.*

But Charles and William need to make it a priority that finances are rejigged and expectations reset for the next generation, so that the loose-cannon spare situation doesn't crop up in a third generation. Harry is ripe picking for the next Epstein.

  • Although, how you manage that with someone who committed perjury is beyond my imagination.
IcedPurple · 07/04/2024 19:30

Andrew was the monarch's son. Harry was her grandson.

I also read a biography once that claimed that the Queen Mother had her sights set on Edward/David but he spurned her, and she bore a grudge for that.

Given she turned George VI down twice when he proposed because she didn’t fancy life as a royal (she wrote in a letter that she had declined in part because she was "afraid never, never again to be free to think, speak and act as I feel I really ought to"), that seems quite unlikely.

MaisieMacabe · 07/04/2024 19:31

You're right, @Serenster . She didn't seek out that life at all.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 07/04/2024 19:33

Yup, not the first time I've seen this point made. IMO if Haz was a light bulb you'd be testing it to see if it was still working.
