american riviera orchard - what was that all about then?

It seems to have gone the same way as their Sussex Royal site. I don't know much about social media or PR, but this all seems pretty odd and ineffectual.

So rude. I had Googled it, it applies to an area around Santa Barbara. But it isn't an actual place name.

Yes, I didn't realise that American Riviera refers to an area, and she's added the Orchard part.

Geebray · 08/04/2024 07:55

Calliopespa · 07/04/2024 22:21

Yes that’s a good point. Though I think there is also a syllable issue too: 3 or 4 in the British equivalents versus a whopping 8 in American Riviera !

You're right, there are far too many syllables. It's just so unmemorable.

Goop? Easy to recall. "American Word Salad"? - not so easy.

MaisieMacabe · 08/04/2024 07:58

"American Word Salad" would be a brilliant name for the online shop! 😂

Ellmau · 08/04/2024 07:58

It's not actually a BAD name, just a bit long.

Riviera Orchard works. I quite like the orchard bit : it’s sort of citrusy and bright!

She seems to have set aro up under a limited liability company called mama knows best, which is registered to the same address as archewell. So they’ve set up an llc, and the llc applied for the trademark.

the thing about trademarks is once you apply, you can’t see if anyone else then applies, not until it’s granted or declined. So it was very risk announcing before they had trademarks as anyone can also apply. Although approval is often granted to first through the door or who has the stronger claim.

she also has a our 15 percent fake followers on the insta page, bots , fake accounts etc, so she needs to get that cleaned up.

themessygarden · 08/04/2024 08:43

'Mama knows best' ??? vs her Ex boyfriend publishing a cookbook last year 'Dad in the Kitchen' .

That's very interesting. I hope she's taking advice.

I don’t really think Riviera and Orchard go together. When I think of Riviera I think of glitz and glamour like the South of France. When I think of orchards I think of apples and plums. The dictionary definition of orchard specifically excludes citrus fruit btw. So glamour and apple crumble. Bit of a weird juxtaposition 😆 I also think it’s too long and not memorable enough for a brand name. Bit wordy for use in a search engine

LadyEloise1 · 08/04/2024 08:52

I agree with you @smilesy.

So rude. I had Googled it, it applies to an area around Santa Barbara. But it isn't an actual place name.

It is however a well-recognised place nickname, so people still "hear" it as one thing.

I should perhaps have used different examples - English Riviera (Torquay and environs with herds of majestic wildebeest), Jurassic Coast, Silicon Fen, Diamond Quarter, Nappy Valley, Granite City etc

Even with more syllables in American Riviera, it's still something that people in the region that is (probably) her main target would hear as one thing

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 08/04/2024 08:56

American World Salad sums it up. Actually it’s quite catchy and easy to say unlike ARO🤣

Markle Knows Best would have been clever and mischievous. But she doesn’t seem to have a sense of humour and takes herself waaaay to seriously.

She needed something punchy and meaningful, like The Tig. I still maintain she should have used Lili’s Arch. Cute, wholesome and memorable. It conjures up lovely images of children’s clothes and homeware. But what do I know, eh?

Ohpleeeease · 08/04/2024 09:02

It’s awkward to say, too many ‘r’s’. And two conflicting brand messages, sophisticated coast and simple country. But most important it isn’t memorable. I have to think about the word positioning every time. The Tig was punchy and stuck in the mind even if you didn’t get the reference.

I think Lili Bunny is a bit twee but entirely appropriate for a babyware range. I could see that taking off.

smilesy · 08/04/2024 09:18

Maybe I’m being cynical, but calling any thing “Lili’s” suggests that their daughter being named after the late Queen’s nickname was done purely to use it in a commercial setting 🤷‍♀️

It made me think of orange trees on the French Riviera. Or lemons on the Amalfi coast. But I suppose you are right as I guess they are groves not orchards so perhaps it is rather confused.

Oh great, yet another post tearing apart the Sussexes. How life affirming.

I think the SM for Riveria 'whatever ' will be struggling with lots of bots and fake followers, even more than now. I think it will be an uphill battle for her to overcome that, so she can engage with her customers.

"PR expert Stacey Wong of Own Your Space recently talked about how, while it’s impressive that Meghan has accumulated so many followers, Wong claims that there’s a concerning number of fake followers. She said, via Marca, “The presence of a 13.77 percent ‘fake follower’ metric reveals a common challenge in digital brand management. Navigating this landscape requires strategic engagement and authentic content to maintain and enhance brand integrity.”

Now, this is totally fair and not a criticism of Meghan, it’s more towards Instagram, noting that within the 13 percent: “7.25 percent suspicious mass followers and 6.52 percent likely bots or fake accounts.”

However, Wong claims that this could tarnish Meghan’s credibility. “With the rise of influencer marketing and the increasing emphasis on genuine connections with audiences, the presence of fake followers can tarnish Markle’s credibility,” she said, adding that it could “hinder her ability to effectively communicate with her genuine followers.”

I really don’t think it was that strategic. I think they just liked the name Lily which was very popular at the time and rather crassly modified it to position themselves favourably with the Queen.

I don’t mind them using their children’s names as brands either, lots of people do.

I genuinely wish her success with the enterprise, I just think the name is a clumsy start.

I don't think it does. It's clunky and orchards and 'rivieras' don't go together.

More to the point, it's been over 3 weeks since the 'launch' and still nothing?

Yeah. So it’s an area. Just like the French Riviera. What’s your problem?

It's not a place name. Google it!

But also, why are you so rude? Have some American Word Salad jam and chill out.

I do think it will be a problem (using Lilibet's name) in the future. It's a very unusual name, and apart from the controversy about their using it against the late Queen's wishes, it might come back to haunt the little girl.

I can't help but be reminded of Christopher Robin Milne who suffered agonies of bullying etc after being immortalised by his father A. A. I love the Pooh books but it would have been better if A. A. Milne had used another name for his son. Christopher Robin is very cute (like Lilibet) and a bit too memorable. But this was the 1920s, when the whole celebrity over-exposure thing hadn't really started, so perhaps we can let him off on the grounds of naivety.

But I'm surprised Meghan is unaware of the dangers here - but maybe she's not very well-read or culturally aware? It wouldn't surprise me at all if, when she gets older, Lilibet herself asks to be known by one of her middle names!

H & M (sorry, I just can't take 'The Sussexes' seriously*) are massive, massive self-publicists and are constantly launching things to a great fanfare of trumpets. It's highly disingenuous to tell people off for commenting on their antics.

Or are we supposed just to forelock tug at all these launches, rather than engage our critical capacity?

(*wonder if either of them could point to Sussex on a map?)
