It seems to have gone the same way as their Sussex Royal site. I don't know much about social media or PR, but this all seems pretty odd and ineffectual.

I really don’t think it was that strategic. I think they just liked the name Lily which was very popular at the time and rather crassly modified it to position themselves favourably with the Queen.

I don’t mind them using their children’s names as brands either, lots of people do.

I do think it will be a problem (using Lilibet's name) in the future. It's a very unusual name, and apart from the controversy about their using it against the late Queen's wishes, it might come back to haunt the little girl.

I can't help but be reminded of Christopher Robin Milne who suffered agonies of bullying etc after being immortalised by his father A. A. I love the Pooh books but it would have been better if A. A. Milne had used another name for his son. Christopher Robin is very cute (like Lilibet) and a bit too memorable. But this was the 1920s, when the whole celebrity over-exposure thing hadn't really started, so perhaps we can let him off on the grounds of naivety.

But I'm surprised Meghan is unaware of the dangers here - but maybe she's not very well-read or culturally aware? It wouldn't surprise me at all if, when she gets older, Lilibet herself asks to be known by one of her middle names!

Hmmm. Her only middle name is…..Diana. That would stir up a whole other can of worms 😂

It is however a well-recognised place nickname, so people still "hear" it as one thing.

I should perhaps have used different examples - English Riviera (Torquay and environs with herds of majestic wildebeest), Jurassic Coast, Silicon Fen, Diamond Quarter, Nappy Valley, Granite City etc

Even with more syllables in American Riviera, it's still something that people in the region that is (probably) her main target would hear as one thing

Edited

The beaches here at Roker and Seaburn are known as the "Roker Riviera". We don't have majestic wildebeest, sadly, but we do have herds of majestic gnus. (Yes- I know it's the same animal, but here up North we like the Flanders and Swan song . . . )

Oh great, yet another post tearing apart the Sussexes. How life affirming.

H & M (sorry, I just can't take 'The Sussexes' seriously*) are massive, massive self-publicists and are constantly launching things to a great fanfare of trumpets. It's highly disingenuous to tell people off for commenting on their antics.

Or are we supposed just to forelock tug at all these launches, rather than engage our critical capacity?

(*wonder if either of them could point to Sussex on a map?)

I wonder if they could point to the UK on a map, never mind Sussex.

Edit for spelling.

One short sentence and I cocked up the spelling.

Granted, but they made a point at the time of saying that she would be known as Lili and that’s what they seem to call her. I think “Lilibet” was a gesture but I don’t expect to see it used much by them.

Theraininspainfalls · 08/04/2024 11:07

I’m quite surprised they didn’t choose to call her Princess Diana to be honest.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 08/04/2024 11:14

I'd be annoyed if my brother got a podcast, and foundation, a production company etc named after him, and all I got was a cutesy clothes line. I'd be questioning my parents' feminist credentials tbh.

That’s what happens when you have too much time on your hands and you’re consumed with envy. You have to delude yourself that the object of your obsession is the comical figure – when, in fact, to outside spectators it’s quite the reverse.

MaisieMacabe · 08/04/2024 11:19

Archie is a regular childs' name - Lilibet not so much. She'll always have that very specific link.

Geebray · 08/04/2024 10:39

It's not a place name. Google it!

But also, why are you so rude? Have some American Word Salad jam and chill out.

I’m not the one being rude here, love.

Me too. But sadly she's dead and they were licking up to the live monarch but it backfired spectacularly.
She was not amused and I don't blame her.
You don't take someone else's "pet" name and use it normally do you ?
They thought it would help inveigle their way back in to the good books after the sh*tshow of the Oprah Winfrey interview.
The brown nosing failed.

They did use Diana as a second name.

Ohpleeeease · 08/04/2024 11:28

I agree that using Lilibet would be problematic for the reasons @CoffeeCantata says. But I really don’t think they will.

What struck me more, aside from the merits or otherwise of the name, is that there wasn’t even a CEO in place at the time of the launch. So I think the problems of getting this thing off the ground are rather more fundamental than what it’s called. And I say that as someone who would like it to succeed for them.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 08/04/2024 11:29

SS talking point 587: They are all just jealous of the real queen.

OneHeartySnail · 08/04/2024 11:56

I don't understand why anyone would have a launch without (seemingly) having anything to launch.

Is saying that 'tearing apart' the people behind the launch?

That's a rather over dramatic way of describing it. The launch was to get public attention, so surely those of us commenting are doing what H&/ or M want? They have our attention. All good.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 08/04/2024 11:59

All I can picture with "American Riviera" is America Ferrera of Ugly Betty fame.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/04/2024 12:03

Posts like SallyWD's are interesting. Poster plops onto reasonably toned discussion, uses emotive language - 'tearing apart' rather than 'discussing' or 'analysing critically' - language designed to put posters on the defensive about their stance or their tone, anyway - then disappears, taking no further part in the discussion.

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain It's a very common, conversation ending tactic. Tell people having a reasonable conversation that they are an "ist", a "phobe" or challenge their personal security by saying they are jealous. People feel they need to justify themselves and the discussion is hijacked. After a while it becomes water off a duck's back imo, and easy to ignore. It's funny when it gets turned back on them, though - if absolutely any discourse can be labelled as problematic, then the people chucking that label around will fall foul of their own stupid rules sooner or later. Unfortunately, the effect is to dilute real examples of hatred, and piss off the otherwise sympathetic public.

StormzyinaTCup · 08/04/2024 12:11

More to the point, it's been over 3 weeks since the 'launch' and still nothing?

Nada, nothing, not a dicky bird to offer us.
However, they have managed to harvest for themselves quite a few email addresses!!

I’m not convinced anything else will be forthcoming tbh.

It's one I've noticed on MN, especially on this board. A good conversation gets going and then someone pops up with 'you're all OBSESSED!' or something. Then disappears. Didn't they get the memo? 😄
