It seems to have gone the same way as their Sussex Royal site. I don't know much about social media or PR, but this all seems pretty odd and ineffectual.

But then he takes millions from - Netflix? The media company that has been trawling his family's history and present for profit? Who made The Crown?!

Yup, not the first time I've seen this point made. IMO if Haz was a light bulb you'd be testing it to see if it was still working.

Oh yes, I'm absolutely not original with this point, but it just re-occurred to me!

The absolute abysmal hypocrisy of it.

And then, of course, he trawls his family's history and privacy for profit by writing a book...

That neither of them see the hypocrisy is astonishing!

I think he's like these celebs like Emma Thompson who fly halfway across the world to join a protest about the environment; or who whang on about carbon footprints while using private jets. It's OK for them because they are morally pure and that cleanses their conduct of any hypocrisy. PH probably didn't see it at all as an invasion of anyone's privacy - he was telling the world what a dysfunctional setup he'd had the good fortune to leave and they deserved it. (Where that leaves the people like his first sex partner and the woman at his school is anyone's guess, though).

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 07/04/2024 19:46

It amazes me that they cut Meghan’s dad off for spilling the beans and then go onto trash the RF. All without seeing the irony!

American Riviera Orchard - it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue does it ?
🙄🙄🙄

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 07/04/2024 19:48

I am definitely not a supporter of H&M, but I do recall their wedding as being very positive. I thought how utterly lovely it was of Charles to walk Meghan down the aisle, and how kind he was to Doria. I recall how pleased lots of us were for Harry.

I didn't like Meghan from the start - she looked an utter 'unroyal' mess at their engagement announcement, never mind all the arrogant 'boots on the ground' shite in the interview, but as a long time Royal watcher I hoped Harry would be happy. I can't get over how much good will they have squandered. Meghan was promoted to us as an intelligent woman - I thought she would get stuck in to reading up about British history and customs (rather than just surfing the DM website looking for comments about herself). I thought how wonderful it would be to have access to so many people and places (afterhours tour of The Tower etc) to learn about the significance of the role she was taking on and general information about history and culture. I can't believe she seemed to have no interest in any of that stuff. What a wasted opportunity.

I am slightly obsessed by the ongoing car crash but I cannot ever remember it!

Totally agree. She doesn’t seem to have any cultural interests though. Never heard her mention reading anything other than her own ‘book’. I don’t think she’s actually all that bright. She talks a lot of nonsense and sounds erudite on the face of it, but the there is no substance to what she says. It’s just noise. In that way she and Harry are similar. Just in it for themselves and tone deaf , not very intelligent.

Not to Brits

But "American Riviera" is a 2-part place name, that would be seen as one name.

So it's like Tunbridge Wells Leisuredrome or Leamington Spa Gardens or Waltham Forest Parade. They're all 3 words but Brits just hear 2 units of meaning (hope that's clear!)

But all of those names are actual place names. Is "American Riviera"?

LadyWhineglass · 07/04/2024 20:01

I read somewhere that as Charles was leaving the church at the wedding he extended his hand to offer Doria the chance to go first. But she misread his social cue, slipped her hand into his and the rest is history.

Yes. Google it.

I never understood why she showed absolutely no interest in what would be her future children’s heritage, the British Monarchy of all things! It utterly baffles me considering how important her own heritage is to her (all of a sudden when it could be weaponised). The difference between her and the newly crowned Queen Mary is stark, she learnt all she could about the Danish way of life, its history and customs plus she learnt the language fluently, she really respected the institution she married into and wanted to be accepted by the Danes and rightly has been. Meghan was the other end of the scale, she could not give a shiny shit.

The South Park creators felt the same, empty vessel indeed.

OneHeartySnail · 07/04/2024 20:13

But that's not the Hollywood narrative, is it? The Brits are always the villains, or hopelessly stuffy and need an American to show them how to be human.

The American girl marrying a prince faces all sorts of ridiculous and out dated etiquette, but ultimately wins through and everyone accepts her values and behaviour and is grateful to her...

It's astonishing. 'What? A one-to-one tour of Hampton Court Palace with amazing, incredibly intelligent, mega-knowledgeable and super-nice Lucy Worsley? Pfft. No thanks! I'd rather sit at home and watch The Little Mermaid.'

She's an intellectual pygmy. (Is one even allowed to use that phrase any more?!)

Given she turned George VI down twice when he proposed because she didn’t fancy life as a royal (she wrote in a letter that she had declined in part because she was "afraid never, never again to be free to think, speak and act as I feel I really ought to"), that seems quite unlikely.

I don't think this necessarily applies.

I think perhaps she was both socially ambitious and attracted to Edward (in that order). She turned down George because she realised she wasn't going to get anywhere with his brother and he was "first reserve".

And as for her claiming that she was "afraid never, never again to be free to think, speak and act as I feel I really ought to" - well, I think she did whatever she liked and ruled both her husband and her daughters. She covered up her true, determined personality very well indeed, because she liked the adulation, but there was nothing soft or yielding about her.

I agree, except for the bit about her sounding 'erudite on the face of it'. I don't think she sounds even superficially bright. It's all empty word salad, mostly about herself. She got a degree from a good university, so she's obviously not intellectually challenged on the same level as her husband. But she's definitely not especially intelligent.

And I agree that she seems to have no interest in culture or history at all. She's pretty vacuous at the end of the day. Supposedly Sophie bonded with the Queen over their shared interest in history and the Queen used to enjoy showing her around the palace archives. Meghan was only interested in freebies and poorly fitted designer outfits. What a wasted opportunity.

Theraininspainfalls · 07/04/2024 20:20

I mean her delivery style is quite impressive but the content is non existent. It’s nonsense speak.

Prince Andrew and Fergie got married in Westminster Abbey so I would understand if Harry thought the same would be on offer to him.

Andrew was the monarch's son. Harry was her grandson.

If reports are correct the late Queen thought they should have a quiet wedding as Meghan was a divorcee . Also she was - apparently- unimpressed that Meghan wore a veil .

Abouttimeforanamechange · 07/04/2024 20:30

Edward and Sophie were married at St George's, weren't they? So it's not as if there wasn't precedent.
