AIBU to lose faith and trust in what we get to hear about the royal family?

What would restore your faith in the royal family?

OP posts:
Lalupalina · 17/03/2024 08:11

I never had any faith or trust in them. I've always considered monarchies unacceptable and undemocratic.

It's outdated and undemocratic, and it should be abolished.

WinnieTheW0rm · 17/03/2024 08:11

Head of State continues to work despite being on active cancer treatment

That's no reason to lose trust.

And they really do exist, it's not a matter of faith!!

Lalupalina · 17/03/2024 08:15

No, it’s just bread and circuses, isn’t it. They’re an expensive soap opera, keeping the peasants entertained. They’ve been that way for a long time. They’re irrelevant in the 21st century but we still like to gawp at their carriages and squabbles - it’s like posh Eastenders, really.

That's a perfect summary Grin

But yes, modern democracies do not need a 'royal' family.

Any views on Andrew? Is he not worth some of your invective?

C1N1C · 17/03/2024 08:35

I don't think the UK or the monarchy are racist. When it all started, everyone, including all the news outlets, were super excited to see Meghan. Harry was the favourite and WE were all curious about this new injection of personality.

The issues people have had are how she wanted the royal family to change to her way of thinking. It just wasn't going to happen. She clearly wasn't happy playing second fiddle... so she no doubt put pressure on Harry to leave, or it could just as easily have been her giving him the strength to leave his 'oppression'.

Then they wanted to leave and do their own thing, but still use the royal titles... I'm sorry, but royalists and anti-royalists alike are all going to hate that! You're cashing in on a birth privilege (which the UK could probably vote on and remove at any time!), to make money and not give back to the country. Being royal is a JOB (OK, a pretty cushy job, but still).

Then they do the Oprah interview and basically slam their freebies. And no, I don't think the comments was racist, even Chris Rock said it... even black people would be curious what the baby would look like!

So for seven years they've simply been whining about how hard their lives are because of the royal family, yet using the titles and that influence at every turn. They want their own lives, yet cling onto that past. If they really wanted to have their own life, they would relinquish all ties, get normal, boring office jobs, and in doing so, they will get back the respect of everyone.

I honestly think that's all the rest of the world want. There's no 'half-quitting'... a rare smoker is still a smoker, an occasional sexist is still a sexist, a passive royal is still a royal. All in, or all out. No logos, no netflix deals, no abuse of titles. Harry went to one of the best schools, Meghan is a beautiful 'actress', they have all the doors open for them. Be a decent (non-grifting) human being like the rest of us and you'll be loved, or at least respected again.

What??

kingtamponthefurred · 17/03/2024 09:03

Faith? They aren't gods, though some of them seem to think they are.

beatrix1234 · 17/03/2024 09:16

healthadvice123 · 17/03/2024 02:02

@beatrix1234 they have private wealth you know ? Should we take everyones who is rich then and put it into public transport ? What a weird and not thought out thing to say
you can’t just strip someone of their money just like that

And how did they make their fortune? Hmm… let me guess… by selling vacuum cleaners? Because they’re incredibly smart? Answer: no, they got rich by being monarchy, aka a highly privileged position that we (the people) didn’t vote for them to be there?

I like and admire Anne and Sophie, the others don't seem important or contribute much to society.

I would not go as far as that but both are good at what they are supposed to be doing, along with William/kate and Camilla and Charles, to an extent.
However, recent events have made me feel that we, the public are treated as though we should just agree with everything they say, post, etc.

The media/public has a right to question items that do not add up

Wishing our King Charles and HRH Kate a speedy recovery!

I do my best to forget he exists to be honest! Odious monster that he is

Tothemanorborne · 17/03/2024 09:36

I’ve not lost any faith. Kate and her family want to - very reasonably- keep her medical condition and treatment private. It was announced that Kate had surgery and she would be taking time off to recuperate and would be back after Easter. It was also announced that there wouldn’t be updates. The British press and some of the public are bloody furious that they don’t know what’s wrong with her and are actually bullying the Royal family.

I’m not a raging monarchist btw as I do feel that having a royal family is a bit outdated - but I’m a very reasonable adult.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 16/03/2024 20:43

No, no trust lost. They are human just like you and me.

Except we are all supposed to pledge allegiance and worship them? Have their faces on our money and pay them to live in palaces for no return?

We're not supposed to see the human side and if we do then the question arises why do we treat them so differently??

What? I’m fifty and British. I have mever once been asked to pledge allegiance to the monarchy or go worship them. That’s ridiculous.

Movingon2024 · 17/03/2024 09:41

I have no 'faith' in any of them or in the institution.

Monarchy is outdated now. The country should move on.

flashmcdoodle · 17/03/2024 09:45

Yes because whoever released the Kate pic to the press did so as a verified trusted source and would have been well aware that a manipulated photo was in breach of this.

Apparently it's extremely rare to issue a kill notice on images and the level of manipulation was greatly in excess of anything acceptable. Usually the original image should be available from the trusted source but this was denied.

Kensington Palace has now lost its status as a trusted source. This is an unfathomable situation for a Royal Family to be in and is extremely significant.

ladykale · 17/03/2024 09:48

C1N1C · 16/03/2024 20:41

No.

Harry and Meghan have ruined it. I consider the Royal Family like Father Christmas. The more mystery, the better. Harry and Meghan have over-shared and now its expected of the rest of them. Every picture is now scrutinised. Every action.

Whether they make money or cost money is irrelevant for me. I think they draw people on and give England a magical feel.

Of course / it was Meghan & Harry, not the bankrolled paedophile who has never been held to account and is STILL allowed to attend royal events!

I just don't buy that. I suspect the next time KP release a photo then:
A) a small but vocal group of people online will make some piss-taking memes
B) an even smaller but more vocal group of people online will scour it for inconsistencies and come up with a hundred new conspiracy theories
C) media organisations will examine it very carefully and point out any possible editing but publish it anyway because it will generate millions of clicks/sales
D) the vast majority of people will continue to consider the entire circus irrelevant and not care if it is edited or not and crack on with their lives having given it a quick glance.

SallyWD · 17/03/2024 10:05

I never had faith or trust in them. It seems a very odd notion to have "faith and trust" in a family you've never met. My memories of them go back to the 1980s and they've always seemed like a very dysfunctional family to me.

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 17/03/2024 10:06

Never had any, the majority of them are pretty lazy especially W and K

I disagree as they are the most hard-working RF only second to Anne, IMO

Never had any faith or trust in them. They play the public for fools whilst living off the tax payer. There vast fortunes would not last long if they had to pay for their own security and the upkeep of all their palaces.

The late queen made sure she was exempted from laws that were not to her advantage.
