Another thing I notice is random nitpicking over an inane detail, and ignoring of the wider point. And the passive aggressive digs in there too, almost as if they want the poster to respond angrily so the conversation implodes. And when people respond calmly and stay on track - they’ll continue to avoid the actual debate and eventually radio silence. It becomes clear there isn’t really a rebuttal to the point they supposedly disagree with. Or they don’t really care.

I think many many posts are more about getting a reaction from the people seen as “the other side” than anything else. Most particularly the fawning ones and the ones with excessive formatting.

Turtlerussell · 22/02/2024 18:48

At one point a lot of the conversation was being censored, lots of shaming to control the content of posts. People seem to care less which is good. The classic ‘you’re racist if you say that’ was so overused it ended up losing all meaning.

AliceOlive · 22/02/2024 18:50

I got called misogynist and told I cared more racists than racism. And for some reason it bothered me more when someone defended the person saying that with “it’s just an opinion”.

AliceOlive · 22/02/2024 18:51

Separate instances. I don’t think anyone saying that about me even knows what the words mean.

We can’t take it personally, they don’t know us. And if anyone has to resort to calling me a racist and saying I’m on the same page as an actual Neo nazis, just to make a point, says a lot more about them and the strength of their whole argument, than it does about me/us. I used to lurk previously, the unfairness and unfounded accusations, funnily enough, encouraged me to start posting a bit more.

I quite like this thread, people sharing opinions, not necessarily agreeing with each other (marmite) and yet it doesn’t get below the belt. I find it interesting to hear what others think, and learning things along the way.

AliceOlive · 22/02/2024 19:11

I love reading what other people think and also just hearing about their lives. I was a huge Dear Abby/ Ann Landers fan from a really young age and this place is like that on steroids. Plus you get follow up.

I was never particularly a RF follower or fan. Though I did ask to have my haircut like Diana when I was little. 😁

I say pretty regularly that I like this forum because I find the people and the interactions between everyone interesting.

AliceOlive · 22/02/2024 19:13

Also, I like to know about food. What is and is not available in other places. Like, do you have Mayonnaise?

Turtlerussell · 22/02/2024 19:15

Yes we have mayonnaise in the UK, even vegan avocado mayo, which I went through a phase of having with everything. Back on the egg based stuff now 😄

AliceOlive · 22/02/2024 19:19

I like the avocado mayo. But don't buy it very often.

Borough Market: Edible Histories: Epic tales of everyday ingredients

Talking of food. Read that not too long ago, found it quite enjoyable 👍

AliceOlive · 22/02/2024 19:40

That looks great!

Mylovelygreendress · 22/02/2024 22:54

Popping in from Tenerife . Was going to visit the supermarket earlier but drank wine instead . No cheese.

AliceOlive · 22/02/2024 23:18

Who needs cheese in Tenerife? 😁

Mylovelygreendress · 23/02/2024 09:02

I would have been safer with cheese < looks for paracetamol >

wildernesssw · 23/02/2024 09:12

To return to the First Nations topic, I'm not sure why an ex-pat Brit and an American - both living in the USA - are getting involved in Canadian First Nation issues. Plenty that's closer to home...

I had a Diana cut too! Well it looked a tiny bit like hers.

Talking about mayonnaise, I went to a dinner party recently and the starter was half a tinned pear with a white sauce (which I took to be mayonnaise even though it was pretty bland, didn’t have the mustard kick you get with Hellman’s) and a prawn on top. It was the most bizarre thing I’ve ever eaten and of course we were all saying how delicious it was.

wildernesssw · 23/02/2024 10:07

An interesting take on the prawn cocktail!

RoyallyRhubarb · 23/02/2024 10:34

I’d rather have had the glacé cherry TBH.

RoyallyRhubarb · 23/02/2024 10:35

Now, are we allowed to make comments about Meghan’s clothes and general look on this thread? I thought I’d better ask first.

Very Fanny Craddock.

Talking of which - has anyone seen her episode (there may have been two) on how to do a cheese and wine party? It should come with a trigger warning for cheese lovers.

wildernesssw · 23/02/2024 10:43

The cheese and potato croquettes are OK, although rather time consuming, but it goes downhill from there 😂why not just serve cheese?

Exactly! To think she was once held up as the doyenne of sophistication. Her trifle recipe?

I’m curious about her hair - is it a wig, or just extensions? It looks like a different person’s hair from one day to the next.
