Meghan, Duchess of Sussex spotted out and about, part 3

Part 3 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports. h/t @queentim for the original threads.

I really liked this outfit and the way the skirt flowed as she walked - really good choice and quite pared back compared to some other people on the red carpet.

If the Sussexes are hoping to build some bridges then I think mentioning the horrible social media campaign against Kate might help. They should also call out their “official” supporters: no need to mention the SS by name, but just ask their fans to “be kind”.

I agree . I have seen some truly awful stuff about Catherine on Twitter recently. And dragging in poor Tom Kingston .
As far as the panel is concerned , I really can’t see Meghan being thrilled about being one of 5 (?) especially as Brooke Shields will be a fellow panellist. Meghan likes the spotlight on her .

Roussette · 05/03/2024 11:02

Why is Meghan being criticised before the event has even taken place?
Give her a chance for goodness sake

TallerSally · 05/03/2024 11:16

Here’s more about this year’s SXSW lineup:

This panel is but one highlight of SXSW's extensive lineup, which includes stars like Selena Gomez and Conan O'Brien, alongside industry luminaries such as Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, and Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies. Hugh Forrest, SXSW co-president, expressed his honor in hosting these distinguished speakers, acknowledging their potential to inspire meaningful conversations around representation and mental health.

As the anticipation builds for this landmark discussion at SXSW, the convergence of Meghan Markle, Katie Couric, Brooke Shields, and Nancy Wang Yuen on International Women's Day promises not just to celebrate the achievements of women in media but to ignite a broader conversation about the challenges that lie ahead. Their collective voices, each powerful in its own right, stand as a beacon of hope and a call to action for an industry on the cusp of transformative change. This panel not only honors the spirit of International Women's Day but also sets the stage for a future where representation and equity are not aspirations but realities.”

Great stuff! 🤩

Meghan Markle, Katie Couric, Brooke Shields to Lead Women's Panel at SXSW 2024: A Look Inside

Join Meghan, Katie Couric, Brooke Shields, and Nancy Wang Yuen in a powerful SXSW panel on women's leadership in media on International Women's Day.

I'm excited about Katie Couric and Nancy Wang Yuen.

I didn't know much about Brooke Sheilds aside from the fact that she is an actor and exploited as a child - I however had a quick look at her speaker's bio and see that she has done a documentary talking about her life in the public and as a child and the lack of ownership, autonomy and agency that child actors/performers have. This is very much aligned with my own thoughts about children in the public eye - be it children of famous people, famous children performers, influencer children etc etc. Looks like it will be a great keynote.

I think Brooke Shields will have a lot of valuable stuff to say.
She has suffered with her MH a lot

TallerSally · 05/03/2024 11:39

... and Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies, has been a long-standing advocate (and "talk-walker") for female entrepreneurship and overall gender equality in tech. Not sure what the latest, but Dell has often won accolades as a relatively (for tech) safe place to work for women.

He's also a philanthropist, putting his... $100 billion net worth (!!!) to good use.

So clearly, he shares some causes with our Meghan (gender equality, philanthropy), though sadly for her not the $100bn net worth...😆

I will eat my words if she comes out and criticises the SS and others who are waging a truly horrible campaign against Catherine online.
I will eat my words if she says anything meaningful than her usual word salad .
You can hold me to that .

skullbabe · 05/03/2024 12:19

How awful for the poor employee at Goldman Sachs. It's important to hold these people accountable and it appears that she has done so with Adam Dell and Goldman Sachs.

I'm should hope that if Michael Dell has similar allegations against him - he too is held accountable. However,in the article, apart from mentioning their familial assocaition, I see no relevance of this to Michael Dell's repeated presence at SXSW.

Why is Meghan being criticised before the event has even taken place?

Because people feel confident and safe in her role as "villain".

All people in the Windsor Wars have been the target of truly horrendous rumours and narratives on social media, not just Kate. However, as has been said previously, it is more than apparent in recent weeks who gets protected and who doesn't.

What on earth has MM to do with Michael Dell? 🤣

Ascribing other’s qualities and successes to her seems to have become a sport here. Creative because she likes an artist. Entrepreneur because she threw some money and support to someone else’s good idea.

It’s not even very nice to do that to her, you know? Give her time to develop her own brand.

AliceOlive · 05/03/2024 12:43

It seems like Meghan can’t exist for some people except by comparison. It’s really not nice.

How ironic - the nastiness on this thread around Meghan's SXSW's announcement is a perfect illustration of precisely the type of online hatred that will be discussed on the panel, and needs addressed...

This is exactly how it works (or doesn't), folks! 🤔

That's a really good point actually. Creating something from scratch that has real substance, needs to to be developed and honed at the lower levels and then built up into something authentically your own. Whether it's internal or external pressure that has done it, going in at the top level without the background experience is a recipe for a fail, or at best, something that is rather hollow.

The valid questions and criticisms more geared toward countering the over the top posts making Meghan something she has not shown herself to be. That’s my opinion of what happened here.

It was meant to be a nice thread and I’ve really personally tried to contribute and stay in that spirit, only saying kind things or nothing at all. I don’t think yours posts do that at all. I’ve gently said so a few times, to no avail.

Is it not a debate you seek?

Roussette · 05/03/2024 12:52

I would really rather not hold you to anything if it's ok with you. Greendress

Exactly. But she won't will she because while for some reason she though POW should have spoken up in her support I doubt very much she'll mention to current sm shit storm goign on and offer her support.

At least the US media aren't grubby like The Evil UK Media! Oh wait..didn they just release papped shots of Kate?!

AliceOlive · 05/03/2024 12:54

My grandmother used to go around telling everyone my aunt had a PhD when in fact she was ABD and grandmother was well aware. It was not nice and must have felt humiliating. The over the top praise and comparisons feel like that to me. Meghan isn’t good enough for some as she is so they link her to other’s achievements. It’s sincerely sad and unfair but also just frustrating.

Vespanest · 05/03/2024 12:56

I’d be happy for Meghan to talk about her abuse online as well as Camilla’s, the harassment of Diana and Fergie, the abuse of Katherine. Its the saddest part that the married in women become the targets of media and now online. Yet fans of the women also choose to target the women they see as competition as an act of defence. Yesterday’s delight was mocked up domestic violence photo of Kate. Harry, William and Charles barely a peep of the abuse compared to the women.

Yes, I absolutely hate my own achievements being hyped or exaggerated. It’s embarrassing and uncomfortable. It makes me feel like less than I am.

'How ironic - the nastiness on this thread '

Criticism and scrutiny of the very contrary and selective in their light shining Sussexes is not hate, 'nastiness' or other such hyperbole. Just plain old criticism and scrutiny.
