La Pom Pom Girl is doing the Double Dutch. But who is turning the skipping ropes? Part three/trois/drie of the continuing discussion of Endgame by Omid Scobie. Previous thread:

I have empathy for the bias and protectiveness his seems to feel toward Meghan. I think he has probably had a very tough time being Persian and Scottish and living in UK. He seems to made effort to change his own appearance including skin tone. It always breaks my heart to see someone going to such lengths to look different. I think he’s quite intelligent and certainly well spoken. A book on his own life experiences could be amazing.

That's quite generous of you and indeed having a mixed racial or ethnic background can be a serious cause for mental health problems due to a range of factors, I know because I have a similar background. However, we don't all turn into vicious, gossiping arseholes as a result. On the contrary. Omid being a dick is due to Omid's character not due to his mixed background. Also, I have zero empathy with Meghan, none whatsoever even though I have a mixed ethnic and cultural background and have experienced bigotry and other difficulties associated with it. Meghan is a privileged, hard nosed bully, again that's due to her personanilty and her familial background. It's fairly simple with Megs, she wanted to be number 1 and realised that wasn't ever going to happen.

By the way, i am sure there is racism in the RF as well as in the media, however H&M behaviours cannot be explained or justified by that. They are just not nice people, others would have dealt with all this crap differently. We all make choices, and we all have the choice not to be bitching gossiping dicks.

"In the Oprah interview they said Harry was party to a discussion about potential children. Prior to pregnancy and perhaps prior to marriage.

Harry relayed this to Meghan. If it was offensive to him, why would he do that?"

Quite, @AliceOlive - I've always felt that Harry initially thought it was funny or cute... he relayed it to Meghan because, well just because it came out and he thought she might also find it harmless. It was quite possibly then that he was informed of quite how racist it was - that such comments can never be well meant, they are always, always nasty and must be called out.

But Harry is now saying that it wasn't racist!

shockthemonkey · 01/12/2023 13:00

Fair enough, @IcedPurple , but he blows where the wind blows, I think. He was under pressure in an interview when he rowed back from "racism" to "unconscious bias", and treated us to a little lecture about the difference between the two.

Scobie says on the Newsnight interview he's never actually sat in a room and had a conversation with Meghan or Harry.
That he's 'contacted their team' as part of his job as a journalist. Likewise he's contacted the Royal Family's 'team'.
I'm shocked. I thought he was their best buddy.

I dunno. Maybe the mouthpiece Scobie is doing this entirely for his own profit and/or in the guise of taking up a sword on behalf of someone else it's really to fight his own personal battle of racism.

Damaging all parties in the process.

WaggyEars · 01/12/2023 13:02

Meghan is probably very easily slighted. Therein lies her problem. She really could have had it all, be a British royal with influence and a purpose, she could even have made a difference. She lost it all because of being easily slighted and needing to be adulated to get her feel goods. My sisters is similar, where I don't see slight she sees offence. She is lots more stressed than me. Taking everything personally make you reactive and that is exactly what meghan is, she has no cut ties with all her families. That's on her / them. In her shoes, I'd not like my son be in the centre of such a media storm, however Meghan placed Archie right there.

Vespanest · 01/12/2023 13:02

My theory is Harry is a bit of a pot head with a memory of a sieve, who in his woe is me phase said something he couldn’t back track on that blew up in his face on national TV. This is one area I have sympathy for Meghan. This is his story he should have taken responsibility and decided to put up or shut up on.

MrsLeonFarrell · 01/12/2023 13:03

AliceOlive · 01/12/2023 12:54

@MrsLeonFarrell My theory is that Harry heard the conversation the way a person would who had a partner of the same ethnic background and thought it was nice. “Wonder what the children will look like.” Then he shared it with Meghan and it hit her poorly, especially because, as she said, she was suddenly being treated as “other” after a lifetime of never experiencing that.

I just can’t imagine he’d say “Well, Pops and Katie are worried the kids will be too brown.”

Yes I think that any discussion needs to take into account how awful the tabloids were to Meghan when they turned on her. Plus Harry did absolutely nothing to prepare her for life as a British royal. I think he let her believe it was just like being a celebrity on a cable show (not saying that to denigrate her but to measure the degree of exposure she had) when of course it is totally different. Even A Listers don't get the public believing they own them in the way some do with the royal family.

I think Meghan has made some unwise choices but I place most of the blame on Harry who I believe selfishly let her walk into marriage unprepared because he was in love and desperate not to lose another girlfriend to the pressure of being with royalty.

I think Kate not warmly welcoming warming Meghan immediately and Meghan feeling attacked from all sides caused much of this.

So much of the problem just seems like a massive culture shock. California girl meets Reserved English woman who has extensive reasons to enough to be extremely protective of her own privacy.

Then of course when Meghan writes Charles to tell him Kate’s a racist he said “you really should talk to her. That’s the only way to Sort it out.” Poor man stuck between two women, likely with nary a clue why a lipgloss could turn into an international diplomacy failure. What was he supposed to say?

But now it appears the entire point of the letter was the same as the one to her father; so she could share it with the world.

If I ever meet Catherine I’m definitely asking to borrow her lipgloss.

@MrsLeonFarrell not a bad theory and its what I thought too but in Scobie's book he says that neither Harry or Meghan were party to these conversations, so then it becomes who relayed these conversations to them and what was their motive and also Meghan says she heard about it from Harry so she was hearing about it 3rd or 4th hand which in that case recollections may vary really comes into play.

"“several conversations” were had in the family, away from herself and Harry, that featured “concerns” over what color their unborn son Archie’s skin might be and “what that would mean or look like [for the Firm].”

I heard that: Never sat in a room.

Does not mean no phone calls, no emails, no text messages, no video calls.

Harry, the horse whose mouth it came from, clearly said it was before she was pregnant. So not about Archie.

I think they say it’s about Archie now to make it seem even worse.

The way Scobie plays with semantics though, it is indeed possible that it’s entirely true that he never sat in a room with them. He could well have been standing up 🤷‍♀️😆

So now it's their 'team' apparently going rogue and releasing private correspondence naming names that OS didn't see and put in the manuscript that went to the Netherlands, but the translators somehow knew about and inserted?

Riiiiiiiight.

Haha I thought something very similar. He seems very good at answering any question in a round about way whilst also giving himself plenty of get out jail free cards should he need them.

The shock on Oprahs face is way over the top!
Every single person on this earth has wondered what their child / grandchild would look like
I don't know what exactly was said of course haha probably clumsy but racist or deliberately hurtful language, I doubt that 😅

I tried to read some of the first chapter posted on the last thread. It's not only excruciatingly bad- the most purple of purple prose - but also gauche. Like a sixth former trying to impress with lots of adjectives and irrelevant padding.

This whole scandal is disgraceful. Making these vague allusions to racist comments is contemptible.

For what it's worth I think the suggestion that a pre final version was being worked on by the translators and somehow the final edits never made it to them feels about right.

Scobie splits hairs when in a tight spot as we know. Maybe he did not 'submit the manuscript' containing the names, but someone else may well have done on his behalf.

I wondered if the shock was something different. Oprah comes from a very different background than Meghan. She has, no doubt, had extremely different life experiences.

Meghan said she never experienced discrimination until moving to the UK, at age 36(?). That cannot possibly be something to which Oprah can relate.

Anyone who swears on a persons life is a liar.

YesitsJacqueline · 01/12/2023 13:47

StrawberryJellyBelly · 01/12/2023 13:39

Anyone who swears on a persons life is a liar.

I've never really understood this whole 'swearing on lives' thing. Is the swearing person putting their family's lives up for annihilation by some smiting beast?

Or are they saying that God will do it? Why would God do it? The family members aren't the liars. They are not the ones who have broken a commandment.

Is it like saying, 'as God is my witness!' but with added jeopardy and proxy death? It makes people sound unhinged - and dishonest.
